    Tracing of Neuronal Connections in the Human Brain by Magnetic Resonance Imaging in vivo (1990)

    Notes: Axon degeneration after disruption of fibre tracts in the mammalian nervous system is accompanied by myelin breakdown which leads to changes in its magnetic resonance properties. In two patients with pure motor strokes due to small ischaemic lesions restricted to the internal capsule, magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a narrow band of pathological signal increase descending band-like into the brain stem and ascending to the precentral gyrus, which corresponded to the well-known path of the pyramidal tract. The findings suggest that in man anterograde and possibly retrograde fibre degeneration can be traced in vivo by conventional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Critical conditions are the presence of small, strategically located lesions, appropriate choice of imaging plane, and the interval between time of lesion and of imaging. This demonstration may open a new era for functional neuroanatomy of man.

    Notes: Abstract We describe the algebra of matrices commuting with the action of the modular group on characters ofSU(N) k integrable representations. Using methods of finite quantum mechanics we find a canonical basis for this commutant over ℂ and prove the existence of an equivalent basis over ℚ with integral matrix elements. A final section is devoted to the case ofSU(3).

    Notes: Abstract The efficiency of the nitrification inhibitors dicyandiamide (DCD) and 1-amidino-2-thiourea (or guanylthiourea = GTU) in reducing losses from N fertilizers was investigated in two greenhouse experiments where leaching of nitrate-N was induced by percolation at 3 and 5 weeks after fertilization. At an application rate of 10% by weight of fertilizer-N (e.g. 10 kg GTU/ha), GTU in combination with ammonium sulfate (AS) had effects similar to those of DCD (e.g. 15 kg DCD/ha) with regard to nitrate leaching, plant yields and nitrogen uptake. However, in combination with urea (U), GTU was more effective than DCD when applied at the same ratio except with a humic sandy clay soil (pH 7.3, 4.4% organic C), where GTU did not perform as effectively. Nitrate leaching was reduced by as much as 50% using U/GTU instead of U/DCD, and plant yield increased by 30%. At temperatures between 17 and 25°C, the combination U/GTU could protect a high percentage of the nitrogen from being nitrified and leached over a 3 to 5 weeks period. The superiority of GTU over DCD was demonstrated especially in the treatments with 5 weeks of preincubation, despite the considerably lower application rate.

Die relativen Geschwindigkeitskonstanten der Hauptreaktionen, die die freien Parameter des Modells darstellen, werden für diesen Fall identifiziert, und die gute Übereinstiummung zwischen Theorie und Experiment wird gezeigt.
    Notes: The previously published kinetical structural model is applied to the network build-up during the coreaction of 2,2-bis(4-cyanatophenyl) propane with 2,2-bis(4-glycidyloxyphenyl) propane in bulk. The relative rate constants of the main reactions, which act as the free parameters of the model, were identified for this case, and the good agreement between theory and experiment is shown.
