Notes: A UHF/microwave technique that measures the wave propagation velocity along a modified microstrip line to determine the thickness of an adjacent film of water (up to about 1 mm) on a metallic surface is described. The technique may be extendable to the measurement of the thickness of coatings on both metallic and nonmetallic surfaces.

Notes: Abstract A new approach for the preparation of metal supported montmorillonite catalyst is reported here for the first time. The polyol process in which ethylene glycol is used as reducing agent was employed for the preparation of uniformly distributed copper metal particles on and within the montmorillonite matrix. A hydroxy copper acetate intercalated form of montmorillonite was refluxed at 195 °C with liquid ethylene glycol for 6 h. The reduction of copper acetate to copper metal was apparent from the red color of the reduced product. An X-ray powder diffraction pattern showed the deposition of copper metal on the external surface of montmorillonite and scanning electron micrographs exhibited uniformly distributed spherical copper metal particles of about 0.5 μm size. This process may also be extended for the preparation of other fine metal particles supported on montmorillonite catalysts.

Notes: Abstract It has been long argued that the well known Milner type inference system implemented in the programming language Standard ML is inadequate [4]. The arguments were presented on the basis of intersection-type inference systems [3]. However no algorithm has been developed. The intersection-type inference systems are closed underβ-equality [1] and has been proved undecidable [7]. The paper presents a new type inference system using conjunction-types which extends the notion of intersection-types. The algorithm presented in the author's previous paper [9] is easily adoptable into the Standard ML. In this paper we shall discuss the features of the system and its semantic soundness. Unlike the intersection-type inference systems, the conjunction-type inference system is: 1. decidable 2. semantically sound for all types 3. semantically sound and complete for basic types.

Notes: Abstract Eighty-eight pedophiles, 45 incest offenders, and 44 community controls with no history of sexual or violent crime were compared on eight hormones: androstenedione, cortisol, estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, and testosterone, and on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Results showed that sex offenders had elevated levels of four hormones: androstenedione, cortisol, estradiol and prolactin, when they were compared to normal controls, suggesting some stress-related factors. Covarying out the effects of age, education, and drug or alcohol abuse reduced only the between-group difference for estradiol. Contrary to previous findings, few sex offenders (only 2.3% to 11.8%) had either high, or low, serum testosterone levels. Incestuous and pedophilic men also did not differ from community volunteers on FSH and LH as might be expected from earlier reports. The relative value of static baseline hormonal levels in the peripheral blood and the more dynamic "challenge" tests of the endocrine system are discussed.

Notes: An unsymmetric block Lanczos algorithm has been employed for the dynamic analysis of a large system which has arbitrary damping and/or repeated (or closely spaced) eigenvalues. In the algorithm development, the right and left Lanczos vectors are all theoretically biorthogonal to each other. However, these vectors may lose the biorthogonality owing to cancellation and roundoff errors. For the unsymmetric case there can be a breakdown, even without numerical errors. This paper describes computational techniques which have led to a robust unsymmetric block Lanczos algorithm.
