Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of argyrophilic substances in diffuse plaques of an Alzheimer-type dementia brain was examined using methenamine silver (MS) electron microscopy with the pre-embedding method. Electrondense substances, which were sparse aggregations of bundle-like structures with silver granules, were disseminated in the diffuse plaques. Comparison of serial MS and routine ultrathin sections revealed that diffuse plaques usually show scattered bundles of amyloid fibrils or amorphous materials, or both, between indistinct cell process membranes. Some of these processes were identified as astrocytic or dendritic in origin. A few degenerative neurites were frequently noted in large silver-positive areas but never in small areas. These findings suggest that the appearance of amyloid fibrils and amorphous materials between certain cell processes is a very morphological change in the process of senile plaque formation.

Notes: Co/Pd(111) and Ni/Pd(111) bilayer films were grown epitaxially on single crystal MgO (111) substrates by ultrahigh vacuum deposition. In situ observation of the strain of Co and Ni deposited on Pd (111) plane was performed by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) during fabrication. From RHEED patterns it was confirmed that the lattice constant of a Co film of 2 A(ring) in thickness deposited on Pd was about 3.7 A(ring), which was different from that of Pd (3.89 A(ring)). The strain (εCo) of the Co layer was rapidly released during further Co deposition. The strain εCo of the third Co monatomic layer on Pd is nearly equal to zero. The large strain of the Co layer is localized at about one or two monatomic layers of the interface between Co and Pd. On the other hand, a Ni film deposited on Pd was not strained from the beginning of the deposition. The relationship between the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co/Pd and Ni/Pd compositionally modulated multilayer films and the strain of Co and Ni is discussed.

Notes: Summary The assignments of1H−15N magnetic resonances of the λ-cro repressor are presented. Individual15N-amino acids were incorporated into the protein, or it was uniformly labeled with15N. For the13C−15N double-labeling experiments,13C-amino acids were incorporated into the uniformly15N-labeled protein. All the amide1H−15N resonances could be assigned with such specific labeling, and sequential connectivities obtained by two-dimensional (2D)1H−15N reverse correlation spectroscopies and three-dimensional (3D)1H/15N NOESY-HMQC spectroscopy. Conventional 2D1H−1H correlation spectroscopies were applied to the assignment of the side-chain protons. Some of the1H resonance assignments are inconsistent with those previously reported [Weber, P.L., Wemmer, D.E. and Reid, B.R. (1985)Biochemistry,24, 4553–4562]. The sequential NOE connectivities and H-D exchange rates indicate several elements of the secondary structure, including α-helices consisting of residues 8–15, 19–25 and 28–37, and three extended strands consisting of residues 4–7, 39–45 and 49–55. Based on several long-range NOEs, the three extended strands could be combined to form an antiparallel β-sheet. The amide proton resonances of the C-terminal residues except Ala66 (residues 60–65) were hardly observed at neutral pH, indicating that the arm is flexible. The identified secondary structure elements in solution show good agreement with those in the crystal structure of the cro protein [Anderson, W.F., Ohlendorf, D.H., Takeda, Y. and Matthews, B.W. (1981)Nature,290, 754–758].

Notes: Abstract The negative muon spin rotation method (μ− SR) has been applied to studies of electronic states at oxygen sites of oxide superconductors YBa2Cu3O7, Nd2−x Ce x CuO4−δ (x=0.15, oxygen reduced), LiTi2O4 and related oxide-insulators La2CuO4−δ, CuO, Cu2O. The paramagnetic shifts of μ− trapped at oxygen nuclei in these polycrystalline powder samples have been measured at 300 K. All the measured shifts are positive. In copper-oxides the paramagnetic shifts are of the order 10−3, while in LiTi2O4 is very small (8.4±3.34×10−5). In YBa2Cu3O7, a fast μ− spin relaxation timeT 2 * (∼ 200 ns) has been observed; the reason for this is unknown and further studies are now in progress.
