    Notizen: Electron correlation effects on the five mechanisms in the indirect nuclear spin–spin coupling tensors are computed for H 19F, H2 17O,14NH3,13CH4, H 35Cl, 33SH2, 31PH3, and 29SiH4. The five coupling mechanisms consist of Fermi-contact (FC), spin-dipole (SD), Fermi-contact and spin-dipole cross term (FC/SD), orbital paramagnetic (OP), and orbital diamagnetic (OD) terms. Electron correlation contributions through the second order are calculated by the finite-field many-body perturbation theory (FF-MBPT). The results show an extremely large contribution of the (FC/SD) cross term to the anisotropic part of the couplings. The FC contribution is dominant in the isotropic part, but the OP term is considerable in HF, HCl, and H2O. Electron correlation effects are large in the FC contribution. They are small, but not negligible, in the other terms except in the OD term.

    Notizen: The calculation of nuclear magnetic shieldings σ was performed for four first-row hydrides, i.e., HF, H2O, NH3, and CH4 using the finite-field many-body perturbation theory through second order in the electron correlation correction with London's gauge invariant atomic orbitals. The calculated isotropic shieldings σ¯ for the heavy atoms were larger than the experimental values. The rotational and vibrational correction for the σ¯ of the F atom in HF at 300 K was estimated to be −4.0 ppm.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé Nous avons examiné rétrospectivement les résultats de l'hypothermie combinée à l'irradiation et à la chimiothérapie (HCR) préopératoire chez des malades présentant un adénocarcinome du rectum. Nous avons comparé deux groupes de patients: groupe A 23 malades ont été traités chirurgicalement entre 1986 et 1988 et ont reçu HCR; groupe B (contrôle) 48 malades ont été traités avec la chirurgie seule ou la chirurgie plus chimiothérapie entre 1980 et 1985. Les taux de récidives dans les 2 ans ont été comparés. Bien qu'il y ait eu une différence dans le temps de suivi, les deux groupes étaient comparables en ce qui concerne les facteurs pronostics variés. Les incidences de récidives locales et de métastases pulmonaires étaient nulles dans le groupe ayant reçu HCR. Dans le groupe B, par contre, les incidences étaient respectivement de 14.6% et de 10.4%. Ces différences étaient statistiquement significatives (P〈0.05). L'incidence de métastases hépatiques était la même dans les deux groupes. Tous les patients ont bien toléré HCR excepté un avec myelosuppression et qui a refusé l'hyperthemie locale en raison d'une douleur anale modérée. Il n'y a pas eu d'autre effet secondaire nécessitant l'arrêt du traitement. Ces résultats suggèrent que HCR pré=opératoire chez les patients ayant un cancer du rectum diminue la fréquence des récidives locales et la possibilité de dissémination de cellules tumorales durant l'acte chirurgical.
    Notizen: Abstract We examined retrospectively the results of hyperthermia combined with irradiation and chemotherapy (HCR) prescribed preoperatively for patients with adenocarcinoma of the rectum. We compared two groups of patients: Group A: 23 were treated surgically between 1986–1988 and received HCR therapy; group B (controls) 48 were treated with surgery alone or surgery plus chemotherapy from 1980–1985. The recurrence rate within 2 years was compared. Although there was a difference in follow-up time, the two groups were comparable with regard to various prognostic factors. The incidences of local recurrence and of lung metastasis were nil in those given the HCR therapy. In group B, however, the incidences were 15% and 10%, respectively. These differences were statistically significant (P〈0.05). The incidence of liver metastasis was much the same between the two groups. All patients tolerated the HCR therapy well except for one with myelosuppression and who refused local hyperthermia because of mild anal pain. There were no other side effects requiring cessation of this treatment. These findings suggest that preoperative HCR therapy for patients with rectal carcinoma decreases the frequency of local recurrence and the likelihood of tumour cell spread during surgical procedures.

    Notizen: Abstract We report the MRI findings in a patient with poliomyelitis-like syndrome. MRI demonstrated a lesion extending from the dorsal region of the spons to the upper level of the thoracic spinal cord. The spinal cord was particularly affected in a region involving the bilateral anterior horns. Although its pathology is unknown, the lesion of the spinal cord seemingly reflects the pathological features of this disease.

    Notizen: Abstract In the actinide separation process using TBP as extractant, hydrolytic and radiolytic reactions cause a gradual decomposition of the extractant, resulting in the formation of degradation products which can affect process performance adversely. The TBP diluent has to be cleaned from these degradation products before it is reused. This paper deals with a procedure for solvent cleanup, using a fourstage continuous contactor for increasing the scrubbing efficiency.

    Notizen: Abstract A study of Pu recovery at trace level from U solutions by ion exchange technique is presented. Plutonium retention 〉99.5% onto strong anionic resin, AG-X8, from nitric acid solutions and a 92% recovery using 0.4M HNO3 at 60°C as eluent, were obtained. Uranium interference in Pu sorption from mixed U/Pu nitrate solutions with low U/Pu ratio (∼25) was not verified. However, for high U/Pu ratio solutions (∼10000), uranium interference in Pu retention on the resin, decreases to 59%. Selecting the loading conditions and using AG-X4 resin, 99% Pu retention was achieved. The Pu product is still contaminated with U and another purification cycle is recomended. A scheme for U/Pu first cycle separation is proposed.
