Notes: Optical nonlinearities in strained-layer InGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are studied using pump-probe spectroscopy. It is found that the carrier density required for absorption saturation in a strained InGaAs/GaAs MQW is about a factor of two lower than that in an unstrained GaAs/AlGaAs MQW with similar structures, while the nonlinear index change per carrier is about the same for both samples. The decrease in the saturation density in the strained MQW is explained by the increase of the top valence-band curvature caused by the compressive strain in the quantum well.

Notes: Abstract A naturally occurring member of ubiquinone (Q) group, a dihydroubiquinone-9 (Q-9 (H2)), has been isolated as a minor ubiquinone component from the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. By ultraviolet absorption, mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometric studies, the structure of Q-9 (H2) was found to be 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-IX-dihydromultiprenyl9-1,4-benzoquinone (I).

Notes: Abstract We report a case of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) with urinary xanthine calculi. At eight years of age calculi in the renal pelvis were successfully disintegrated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) without any complications. Follow-up sonography is very useful for management of patients with LNS, particularly when they are on allopurinol therapy.

Notes: Abstract Interleukin-1 (IL-1β), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) were measured in serum from children with measles using an immunoradiometric assay. The IFN-γ level was increased in 52 out of 54 patients in the acute phase of measles (〈7 days of illness), and then declined to an undetectable level in the convalescent phase. Neither IL-1 nor TNF could be detected during the course of the illness. The mean serum IFN-γ level was at its peak on day 4 and could be detected over a 7-day period after the onset of fever, coinciding with the febrile period (6.9±1.5 days). In the acute phase, the phytohaemagglutinin responses, absolute number of platelets, total lymphocyte counts, CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ cell counts and the CD4/8 ratio were depressed, while stab cell number and lactate dehydrogenase levels were higher than those in the convalescent phase. Using Spearman rank sum test, the IFN-γ level was correlated negatively with the peripheral lymphocyte (P〈0.01), CD3+ (P〈0.05), CD4+ (P〈0.05) cell counts and the CD4/8 ratio (P〈0.05) and correlated positively with the stab cell count (P〈0.01) but not with any other parameter. When the acute phase findings were compared between 28 complicated and 40 uncomplicated patients, the former were younger (P〈0.01) and had higher maximum body temperature during the illness (P〈0.05) than the latter, there was no difference in their IFN-γ levels. These results show that endogenous IFN-γ appears in the circulation during the acute febrile phase of measles, but does not contribute directly to any complication of the disease.

Notes: Abstract Three kinds of Al2O3 powders, i.e. two kinds of low-soda Al2O3 with average particle sizes of 3.9 and 0.6 μm and an electrofused Al2O3 with an average particle size of 21.8 μm, were ground for up to 300 h in a dry vibration ball mill. Variations in particle-size distribution, specific surface area, crystallite size, lattice strain, effective temperature factor and lattice constant were examined against milling time. The mechanism of grinding was found to differ between low-soda Al2O3 and electrofused Al2O3. The mechanochemical effects on these Al2O3 powders occurred in the order decrease of crystallite size → increase of effective temperature factor → increase of lattice strain. The length of the a-axis was clearly increased by a prolonged grinding. The difference in the ground state of three specimens was attributed to differences in the physical state of particles originating from the preparation methods, and also to particle size.
