Notes: The entire nucleotide sequence of the Bacillus brevis grsB gene encoding the gramicidin S synthetase 2, which activates and condenses the four amino acids proline, valine, ornithine and leucine has been determined. The gene contains an open reading frame of 13359bp which encodes a protein of 4453 amino acids with a predicted Mr of 510287. The gene is located within the gramicidin S biosynthetic operon, also containing the genes grsT and grsA, whose nucleotide sequences have been determined previously. Within the GrsB amino acid sequence four conserved and repeated domains of about 600 amino acids (45–50% identity) have been identified. The four domains are separated by non-homologous sequences of about 500 amino acids. The domains also share a high degree of similarity (20–70%) with eight peptide synthetases of bacterial and fungal origin as well as with conserved sequences of nine other adenylate-forming enzymes of diverse origin. On the basis of sequence homology and functional similarities, we infer that those enzymes share a common evolutionary origin and present a phylogenetic tree for this superfamily of domain-bearing enzymes.

Notes: The daytime sleepiness potentially associated with antihistamines was evaluated by the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) in a study comparing terfenadine with placebo. According to a double-blind, randomized, cross-over design, 12 healthy men were given either 120 mg terfenadine or placebo once daily in the morning, for 3 consecutive days with a 5-day interval. EEG-polygraphic recordings were made each study day at 9.30 and 11.30 a.m., and 1.30, 3.30, and 5.30 p.m., and the tendency to fall asleep was measured. All mean stage-1 sleep latencies throughout the study failed to show any significant difference between terfenadine and placebo. Accordingly, psychomotor performance assessed by visual and auditory reaction time did not change after treatment. The results of this study confirmed that terfenadine does not induce daytime sleepiness as objectively measured by MSLT.

Notes: Abstract During a North Sea survey in late spring 1986, zooplankton biomass (g dry weight/m2) as well as pollutant concentrations in zooplankton (ng/g dry weight) were determined at 127 stations. On the basis of these data, the load of several cyclic organochlorines in zooplankton (ng/m2) was estimated. It appeared that the highest loads of these pollutants were incorporated in the large zooplankton stocks of the northern and central North Sea, north of 56°N, whereas the highest concentrations were found in zooplankton of the southern North Sea. An explanation for the accumulation of pollutants in sediments as well as in benthos organisms of the central and northern North Sea as found by several authors is discussed in connection with the assumption of a considerably high vertical flux of organic material in these areas. The calculation of total zooplankton content in the North Sea during the late spring survey amounted to about 5 million tons dry weight. This biomass was estimated to contain about 2.6 t PCBs, 19.3 kg p,p′-DDE, 12 kg τ-HCH, 6.4 kg HCB und 5.6 kg α-HCH. These results agree with those on other compartments of the North Sea ecosystem (benthos, fish) found in recent literature. The estimated annual turnover of PCBs in zooplankton (15.2 t) is of the same order of magnitude as the estimated amount transported yearly into the North Sea by rivers and the atmosphere (6–13 t).

Notes: Abstract The relationships among multiple-locus heterozygosity, age, reproduction and growth were examined over the ca. 2-yr lifespan of a cohort of northern bay scallops, Argopecten irradians irradians (Lamarck), from the Niantic River estuary, Connecticut, USA. Electrophoretic analyses revealed a relatively low proportion of polymorphic loci (=0.35) and low level of heterozygote deficiency ( D. across 6 loci=-0.05) in this population. Allele frequency distributions showed a high degree of temporal stability within and among cohorts. No significant correlation was found between multiple-locus heterozygosity and either somatic or reproductive growth. Our results lend support to the postulated linkage between low heterozygote deficit and lack of a heterozygosity/growth association in marine bivalves, and in the pectinid group in particular. Partial reproductive senility occurs in these scallops in their second year of life. Somatic tissue weight increased exponentially with increasing shell height, whereas pre-spawning gonad mass attained asymptotic values in 2-yr-old scallops. Thus, weight-specific reproductive effort was significantly lower in second- than first-year scallops (24 and 33% respectively). This pattern could be generated if high individual reproductive effort in the first year were correlated with accelerated (early) post-reproductive senescence. This kind of resource allocation, in which somatic growth is given precedence over reproductive growth in older individuals, has been previously reported in only one other bivalve, a pectinid (Chlamys islandica), in which the decline in reproductive effort occurs only after the scallops reach an age of ca. 20 yr.
