Notizen: Doxacurium was administered to 50 adult patients for determination of potency (n = 10), onset and duration of clinical relaxation (n = 40). Cumulative dose-response showed the ED95 to be 33.24 μg.kg−1 (95% confidence limits 27.4–39.3). Doxacurium 33 μg.kg−1 was then administered to four groups of 10 patients each who had anaesthesia maintained with either fentanyl-droperidol or halothane and nerve stimulation carried out with single-twitch stimulation at 0.1 Hz or train-of-four stimulation at 2 Hz every 12 s. The onset and duration showed wide individual variation. The mean (SD) times to occurrence of maximal block were 8.5 (4.6), 6.1 (1.9), 6.7 (1.8) and 4.7 (1.3) min in the single twitch-fentanyl, train-of-four-fentanyl, single twitch-halothane and train-of-four-halothane groups respectively, although it ranged from 3.4 to 13.1 min in individual patients. The mean (SD) durations of clinical relaxation (recovery of single twitch or first response in train-of-four to 25%) were 65 (22.8), 52 (21.7), 70 (33.4) and 72 (21.0) min respectively with individual values ranging from 31 to 103 min. Although halothane administration increased the duration of clinical relaxation and train-of-four stimulation accelerated the onset of effect, the changes due to these were not significant. There were no adverse effects on heart rate or indirectly measured arterial pressure.

Notizen: Abstract Nymphal development and adult female reproduction were examined in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, using a defined artificial diet in which the type of protein was varied. Milk proteins, including casein, supported development poorly compared to meat and plant proteins. Soybean protein supported development better than all other highly purified proteins including vitamin-free casein which is commonly used in artificial diets. Last instar females fed the soybean-based diet eclosed earlier at higher eclosion weights, developed their oocytes at a faster rate and experienced higher fecundity than females fed a vitamin-free casein-based diet. Last instar females exhibited different dose-response patterns on diets containing soybean isolate or vitamin-free casein. However, at all concentrations soybean protein was superior to casein in supporting development. The results of a food utilization study during the last instar revealed that consumption rates varied between females fed the soybean and casein based diets. However, approximate digestibility, efficiency of conversion of digested food and the efficiency of conversion of ingested food did not vary significantly between the two dietary treatments. Differential development of females fed the two diets was attributed to differences in stage-specific consumption rates and the poorer quality of casein as a source of protein for development in this species.

Notizen: Summary We have evaluated Sramek's method of impedance cardiography as a non-invasive way of detecting the cardiovascular effects of drugs. We made cardiovascular measurements using the method during passive tilting and exercise 2 h after the oral administration of atenolol (50 and 100 mg), propranolol (40 and 80 mg), pindolol (5 and 10 mg), and placebo in seven separate studies involving eight healthy male volunteers. Equivalent doses of the pure antagonists atenolol (β1) and propranolol (β1, β2) produced similar reductions in heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and cardiac index, and increases in stroke volume and total peripheral resistance, particularly during exercise. In contrast the partial agonist pindolol produced increases in heart rate and cardiac index, and reductions in peripheral resistance at rest. During passive tilting and exercise pindolol reduced heart rate, but cardiac output and total peripheral resistance were unchanged except at the highest levels of exercise. The similar cardiovascular effects of atenolol and propranolol, but differing effects of pindolol, are consistent with reports using other methods of measurement. This suggests that impedance cardiography may have a place in the non-invasive assessment of the cardiovascular effects of drugs.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary This study of 52 patients (27 men) with recent (18 months) or chronic (〉18 months) low back and unilateral radicular pain symptoms was undertaken to investigate whether wasting of the paraspinal muscle components is generalised or selective. During the patients' routine computed tomographic lumbar spinal scans a standardised transaxial view was obtained along the upper end-plate of the L4 vertebra, and the cross-sectional areas of the paraspinal muscles and their components, multifidus and erector spinae, estimated. Irrespective of whether the symptoms were recent or chronic, multifidus dimensions were significantly greater on the side ipsilateral to the radicular pain symptoms. The results indicate selective changes of multifidus in these patients and possibly reflect an adaptive response by this muscle, such as to an increased role in stabilising the lumbar spine in the face of overall paraspinal muscle atrophy.
