Notes: We have successfully fabricated epitaxially grown YBa2Cu3O7/PrBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO/PBCO) multilayer thin films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates by dc/rf magnetron sputtering. The thicknesses of YBCO and PBCO varied from 1 to 8 unit cells. Satellite peaks in x-ray diffraction patterns clearly indicate the formation of periodic modulation structures of different wavelengths. At a certain thickness of the YBCO layer, the zero resistance transition temperature Tc0 decreased with the increase of the PBCO layer thickness. In contrast, Tc0 increased with the increase of the YBCO layer thickness at a constant PBCO layer thickness.

Notes: The Na2 b 3Πu state has been studied by the continuous wave (cw) all-optical triple resonance (AOTR) technique. The AOTR technique used here corresponds to a perturbation-facilitated optical–optical double resonance (PFOODR) excitation through A 1Σu+∼b 3Πu mixed intermediate levels from the ground state to the 2 3Πg state and stimulated emission pumping (SEP) of the 2 3Πg→b 3Πu transition. This sub-Doppler high-resolution PFOODR-SEP technique has allowed us to reach many b 3Πu levels (Ω=0, 1, 2, perturbed and unperturbed, including low v below the A 1Σu+ potential minimum and higher vibrational levels up to v=57). Based on these new high resolution data and previous results from high resolution spectroscopy, we have determined a new set of deperturbed molecular constants from the b 3Πu state up to v=57, the corresponding RKR potential energy curve and the A 1Σu+∼b 3Πu spin–orbit interaction constants. This represents an example of a powerful and general technique for observing a "dark'' (e.g., triplet) perturbing state when only the "bright'' (e.g., singlet) perturbed state is well known from single photon spectroscopy.

Notes: It is demonstrated by our experiment that using the in situ dc magnetron sputtering method, it is possible to prepare high quality YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) thin films with substrates facing the region of plasma ring. The effect of oxygen resputtering can be greatly reduced with a high argon-oxygen working gas ratio and a large target to substrate distance. It is shown that high quality YBCO thin films of more than 60 mm in diameter, that is about the same size of the diameter of the YBCO target, can be prepared with this process. The thin films were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, and the critical temperatures were determined by both resistive and ac susceptibility techniques.

Notes: Epitaxial yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layers were grown successfully on sapphire (112¯0) substrates by using rf magnetron sputtering method. The films were cubic in structure with their (100) orientation normal to the substrate surface. YBa2Cu3O7 thin films were deposited on the YSZ/sapphire substrates by the in situ dc magnetron sputtering method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed they were highly c-axis oriented with the zero resistance temperature TCO=92 K and critical current density Jc=1.6×106 A/cm2 at 77 K.

Notes: Abstract To explore whether elevated red blood cell sodium-lithium countertransport in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients with nephropathy is related to the physiological Na+/H+ antiport activity, we measured the activity of this antiport in serially passaged cultured skin fibroblasts from insulin-dependent diabetic patients with and without nephropathy and from non-diabetic controls. Na+/H+ antiport activity (measured as the rate of amiloride-sensitive Na+ influx) was significantly elevated in patients with nephropathy compared with patients without nephropathy and normal controls (13.35±3.8 vs 8.54±2.0 vs 7.33±2.3 nmol Na+/mg protein per min;P〈0.006 andP〈0.001 respectively). This raised activity in patients with nephropathy was due to an increasedV max for extracellular Na+.K m values were similar in the three groups. Amiloride-sensitive Na+ influx was also higher in cells under baseline conditions and after serum stimulation from patients with nephropathy. Intracellular pH values were significantly higher, both during active proliferation and after 10 min of exposure to serum, in cells from patients with nephropathy compared with patients without nephropathy and normal controls. Serum-stimulated incorporation of [3H]thymidine into DNA was greater in patients with nephropathy than in the other two groups. These data in cultured fibroblasts suggest that intrinsic abnormalities in cell function, independently of the metabolic disturbances of diabetes, are a feature of diabetic patients who develop nephropathy.

Notes: Summary Autoradiograms were prepared from midbrains and hindbrains of male and female Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus), kept under short-day or long-day illumination, after injection of tritium-labeled 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (vitamin D, soltriol). Concentration and retention of radioactivity was noted in nuclei of certain neurons, glial cells, and ependymal cells, and in choroid epithelium. Labeled neurons of varying intensity were found throughout the brainstem in distinct populations at characteristic topographical sites, which include cranial nerve motor nuclei, the nucleus (n.) reticularis tegmenti pontis, the caudoventral region of the n. raphe dorsalis, the n. trapezoides, the n. vestibularis lateralis and n. vestibularis superior, neurons in the various nuclei of the sensory trigeminus, accessory optic nuclei, scattered neurons in nuclei of the reticular formation, the n. ambiguus, certain cells in the area postrema, and many others. Glial cells with nuclear labeling, probably microglia, were scattered predominantly in or near myelinated nerve fascicles. The choroid epithelium showed strong nuclear labeling throughout the ventricle. Nuclear labeling of ependyma was variable and weak, mainly at ventral and lateral extensions (recesses) of the ventricle. The extensive presence of nuclear binding in select neural structures indicates that vitamin D exerts specific genomic effects on cell populations that are known to be involved in the regulation of motor, sensory, autonomic, neuroendocrine, metabolic, and immune functions. The results of these studies, in conjunction with those from other brain and peripheral tissues, recognize vitamin D-soltriol as a steroid hormone with a wide scope of hormone-specific target cells, similar to estrogen, androgen, and adrenal steroids, and which are topographically distinct and characteristic for its functions as the steroid hormone of sunlight.

Notes: The paper addresses the problem of plate modelling within the framework of the h-p-version of the finite-element method. A natural hierarchy of models is constructed. The lowest member of the hierarchy is the well-known Reissner-Mindlin model. It is shown that higher degree elements do not show any locking effects for the models under consideration.
