    Notes: The structure of field-aligned plasma jets associated with magnetic reconnection is examined. It is found that the plasma jets are located slightly downstream of the magnetic separatrices and each plasma jet consists of two parts: (a) a slow-mode shock and (b) a fast-mode compressional structure. The slow shock accelerates the plasma and converts magnetic energy into flow energy and thermal energy. The fast-mode compressional wave, located immediately downstream of the slow shock, decelerates the plasma and converts part of the flow energy back into magnetic energy and thermal energy. The combined structure of slow shock and fast compressional wave leads to the formation of the narrow field-aligned plasma jet.

    Notes: We describe the fabrication of a free-standing YBa2Cu3C7−δ air bridge for useful applications of microstructures and microcircuits integration. We have used a sacrificial dielectric layer, which was subsequently etched, to produce the air gap between top and bottom layers. We have used conventional photolithographic processing, ion-beam dry etching, and selective wet etching with HF to create the novel microstructures. Step coverage of epitaxial bridge layers have been achieved without significant degradation of the superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7−δ layers.

    Notes: Summary The CMV (cisplatin, methotrexate, and vinblastine) and M-VAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin) regimens were used to treat 19 patients with advanced transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urothelial tract. In the CMV group, the partial response rate was 45.5% and the mean response duration was 6.3 months. No complete response was obtained in our series. The median duration of survival was 15.8 and 8.3 months in responders and nonresponders, respectively. The toxic symptoms included one case of sepsis and three cases of renal toxicity. However, nausea and vomiting were experienced by most patients and required the administration of antiemetics. In the M-VAC group, the median duration of survival for responders was longer than that of nonresponders (〉10.2 vs 7.2 months), although the number of patients was too small for this difference to reach statistical significance. The toxic symptoms included one case of sepsis, two cases of renal toxicity, and nausea and vomiting in most patients. Bone metastasis in three patients did not respond to chemotherapy (CMV), a finding that is compatible with the results reported by other investigators. In summary, chemotherapy with the CMV or M-VAC regimen was effective in improving the response rate of patients. However, the duration of response was short, toxicity was severe in some cases, and the efficacy against bone lesions was poor. These problems must be solved to improve the outcome of patients with TCC following chemotherapy with the CMV or M-VAC regimens.

    Notes: Abstract A numerical simulation is performed to investigate the prominence formation in a magnetic arcade by photospheric shearing motions. A two-and-a-half-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code is used, in which the gravitational force, radiative cooling, thermal conduction and a simplified form of coronal heating are included. It is found that a footpoint shear induces an expansion of the magnetic arcade and cooling of the plasma in it. Simultaneously the denser material from the lower part of the arcade is pulled up by the expanding field lines. A local enhancement of radiative cooling is thus effected, which leads to the onset of thermal instability and the condensation of coronal plasma. The condensed material grows vertically to form a sheet-like structure making dips on field lines, leading to the formation of the Kippenhahn- Schlüter type prominence. The mass of the prominence is found to be supplied not only by the condensation of the material in the vicinity but also by the siphon-type upflows. The upward growth of the vertical sheet-structure of the prominence is saturated at a certain stage and the newly condensed material is found to slide down from above the prominence along magnetic field lines. This drainage of material leads to the formation of an arc-shaped cavity of low density and low pressure around the prominence. The problem of force and heat balance is addressed and the prominence is found to be not in a static equilibrium but in a dynamic interaction with its environment.

    Notes: Abstract The discrete evasion game with a three-move lag, formulated over thirty years ago, was one of the earliest games with time-lag complications. This game remains unsolved, even though it is well-known that the game has a value. By considering the bomber-battleship duel and by constructing an explicit strategy for the bomber, we bound the value from below as 0.28648. This is believed to be the best lower bound known.

    Notes: Two dilatometers are presented here that were developed for the use with, but not limited to, low-shrink unsaturated polyester resins. One of the dilatometers, made from a glass syringe and two aluminum plates, was limited to lower pressures. The other dilatometer, similar in design to the first, was made from a hydraulic cylinder and was capable of pressures to 500 psi. The dilatometers were calibrated and tested by the polymerization of styrene. Several low-shrink unsaturated polyester resins were cured in the dilatometers and the results of these experiments are given. The interactions of volume change, rheology change, conversion, and microstructure formation were also measured. Finally, the effect of pressure was considered.

    Notes: A study on anisotropic material flow of polymeric composites in compression molding was conducted. Flow resistance and material anisotropy were measured by compression and tension tests to quantify the inhomogeneity of chopped fiber reinforced polymeric composites. The material was assumed to obey Hill's anisotropic yield criterion with its associated flow rule. An anisotropic finite element formulation was developed to simulate the material flow under various conditions. This two-dimensional model was applied to plane strain compression in a mold with plate-rib type geometry to substantiate the effect of fiber induced anisotropy. The predictions were compared with experimental results.
