Notes: Bafilomycin A1, a specific inhibitor of the vacuolar-type H+-ATPase, responsible for acidification of intra-cellular compartments, prevents the vacuolization of Hela cells induced by H. pylori, with an inhibitory concentration giving 50% of maximal (ID50) of 4 nM. Bafilomycin A1 is also very efficient in restoring vacuolated cells to a normal appearance. The vacuolating activity of Helicobacter pylori is not inhibited by a series of specific inhibitors of vacuolar H+-ATPases. These findings indicate that a transmembrane pH gradient is needed for the formation and growth of vacuoles caused by the bacterium and that this pH gradient is due to the activity of a vacuolar ATPase proton pump of HeLa cells.

Notes: Abstract Seroquel was compared to clozapine and several other antipsychotic agents in tests predictive of antipsychotic activity or extrapyramidal symptoms. In the conditioned avoidance test in squirrel monkeys as well as several paradigms using apomorphine or amphetamine-induced behavioral alterations, seroquel displayed the profile of a drug with potential antipsychotic activity. In these paradigms the potency of seroquel was somewhat less than clozapine in rodent tests, while the reverse was true in higher species, i.e. monkeys, cats. In tests designed to evaluate the propensity to induce EPS or tardive dyskinesia, for example, the production of dyskinetic reactions in haloperidol-sensitized cebus monkeys, seroquel displayed a profile similar to clozapine and disparate from typical antipsychotic drugs. In drug-naive cebus monkeys seroquel sensitized significantly fewer monkeys than haloperidol and the dyskinetic reactions were of significantly less intensity. It is anticipated that this novel antipsychotic agent will have a significantly reduced propensity to produce extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia than typical antipsychotics.

Notes: Abstract The paper discusses the geo dimensions of the new world order, with particular emphasis on the increasing role of geoeconomics, and its impact on US national strategy. While the paper uses the US experience to illustrate the growing importance of geoeconomic considerations, the issues raised have direct bearing on many other nations throughout the world. US post Cold War strategy is determined by its three geo challenges. The most important is the geoeconomic challenge caused by the tri-polar division of the world along trading bloc lines, instant global communication and other technologies overcoming the constraints of physical geography, transnational corporations (TNCS) that are becoming supranational in character, and the emergence of a well educated global labor force. The geopolitical challenge is characterized by America's declining relative economic power and its traditional military allies having become economic competitors, while religious, ethnic, and regional tensions threaten its global interests. The third challenge is the military geography issue of effectively projecting power over distance, within the constraints of greatly reduced budgets and loss of overseas bases.

Notes: Abstract We reviewed colorectal biopsies and clinical records from 36 patients with chronic watery diarrhea who had been diagnosed as having microscopic colitis and compared their histologic features with the more detailed and precise criteria for lymphocytic colitis. Published pathologic criteria for lymphocytic colitis were applied to the biopsies and compared. Focal or diffuse nature of the lymphoid infiltrate were noted separately. The focal lymphoid infiltrate was related to lymphoid aggregates in the lamina propria of the mucosa. Eighteen cases had focal lymphoid cell infiltration, and 16 of them had associated diverticula, polyps, or both. Eighteen cases had diffuse lymphoid cell infiltration, and six of them had diverticula or polyps. Results indicate that focal cellular infiltration strongly predicts associated diverticula or polyps. The group with no diverticula or polyps most closely conformed to histologic criteria for lymphocytic colitis (Kruskal-WallisP〈0.02). We conclude that lymphocytic colitis comprises a well-defined group of cases within the large and less-defined group of microscopic colitis.
