Notizen: We have successfully linked a standard patient monitor system (Hewlett pakard M1166A-A66) with the Boxter Edwards critical-Care Swan Gan- Intellicath continuous cardiac output catheter and the Vigilance continuous cardiac output minior system to porduce continuous values of systemic vascular resistance. Six cases are presented in which marked changes in indexed systemic vascular resistance were observed as a result of clinical interventions. The continuous derivation of systemic vascular resistance has much potential as a diagnotic and research tool as well as allowing rapid ac curate assessment of the response of patients to therapy.

Notizen: Abstract— Fatigue crack initiation and propagation in duplex stainless steels are strongly affected by microstructure in both inert and aggressive environments. Fatigue crack growth rates in wrought Zeron 100 duplex stainless steel in air were found to vary with orientation depending on the frequency of crack tip retardation at ferrite/austenite grain boundaries. Fatigue crack propagation rates in 3.5% NaCl solution and high purity water are increased by hydrogen assisted transgranular cyclic cleavage of the ferrite. The corrosion fatigue results are interpreted using a model for the cyclic cleavage mechanism.

Notizen: Abstract— Fifty seven short fatigue cracks in the Ni-base superalloy AP1 have been examined, to ascertain how the paths taken by growing fatigue cracks are determined. The observations were made on the surface of a smooth specimen, and on the exposed fracture surfaces. Three dimensional reconstructions of the vulnerable microstructures in the vicinity of the cracks were produced. Initiation occurred in mode II, with the lines of intersection of the initiation sites with the specimen top surface orientated at approximately 45° to the tensile axis. These initiation sites developed in slip bands which crossed a large grain and at least one other grain via a grain boundary with a low angle of misorientation. ‘River markings’ on one of the initiation facets, indicated that the crack first opened from the top centre of the initiation grain. Subsequent to initiation, the growth paths of these cracks are related to the misorientations of the grains and the progress of the crack front.

Notizen: Abstract A substitutional-interstitial model for impurity diffusion in semi-conductors is discussed. In particular we consider a surface-source problem and obtain asymptotic solutions in the limit of the surface concentration of impurity being much greater than the equilibrium vacancy concentration. In the absence of vacancy generation, a double error function impurity curve is obtained. These double profiles reproduce some of the qualitative features of diffusion in many III–V semiconductor systems. We also discuss how vacancy generation modifies the analysis and show that in the limit of high vacancy generation, the problem becomes one of linear diffusion with the diffusion curves then being single error function complements.

Notizen: Abstract The biostratigraphy of fossil diatoms contributes important chronologic, paleolimnologic, and paleoclimatic information from Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Diatoms are the dominant and best preserved microfossils in the sediments, and distinctive assemblages and species provide inter-core correlations throughout the basin at millennial to centennial scales, in both high and low sedimentation-rate environments. Distributions of unique species, once dated by radiocarbon, allow diatoms to be used as dating tools for the Holocene history of the lake. Diatom, pollen, and organic geochemical records from site 305, at the foot of the Selenga Delta, provide a history of paleolimnologic and paleoclimatic changes from the late glacial (15 ka) through the Holocene. Before 14 ka diatoms were very rare, probably because excessive turbidity from glacial meltwater entering the lake impeded productivity. Between 14 and 12 ka, lake productivity increased, perhaps as strong winds promoted deep mixing and nutrient regeneration. Pollen evidence suggests a cold shrub — steppe landscape dominated the central Baikal depression at this time. As summer insolation increased, conifers replaced steppe taxa, but diatom productivity declined between 11 and 9 ka perhaps as a result of increased summer turbidity resulting from violent storm runoff entering the lake via short, steep drainages. After 8 ka, drier, but more continental climates prevailed, and the modern diatom flora of Lake Baikal came to prominence. On Academician Ridge, a site of slow sedimentation rates, Holocene diatom assemblages at the top of 10-m cores reappear at deeper levels suggesting that such cores record at least two previous interglacial (or interstadial?) periods. Nevertheless, distinctive species that developed prior to the last glacial period indicate that the dynamics of nutrient cycling in Baikal and the responsible regional climatic environments were not entirely analogous to Holocene conditions. During glacial periods, the deep basin sediments of Lake Baikal are dominated by rapidly deposited clastics entering from large rivers with possibly glaciated headwaters. On the sublacustrine Academician Ridge (depth = 300 m), however, detailed analysis of the diatom biostratigraphy indicates that diastems (hiatuses of minor duration) and (or) highly variable rates of accumulation complicate paleolimnologic and paleoclimatic reconstructions from these records.

Notizen: Abstract An investigation into the influence of indigenous trees on soil fertility was conducted in an area of semi-arid tropical savanna in Zimbabwe on two contrasting soil types: dystrophic savanna soils (sandy soils) and eutrophic savanna soils (fine-textured soils). The study adds further support to the growing literature showing that trees have a positive influence on soil fertility. The study suggests that tree clearance, as advocated in these agropastoral systems, may not necessarily result in long-term benefits. It is argued that the primary mechanism by which soil fertility is improved is through increased litter and soil organic matter compartments under trees. The influence of trees on cation levels is greater on sandy soils than fine-textured soils because the exchange capacity of fine-textured soils is determined largely by soil texture whereas organic matter is the prime determinant of exchange capacity in sandy soils. The present study demonstrates that fertility improvement under trees is not at the expense of fertility decline in the surface soils of the zone around the tree. Leaf quality, as reflected simply in leaf C:N ratio, influences decomposition rates but the activities of termites probably confound any simple relationship. Litter quality of tree species is probably important in determining levels of soil organic matter under canopies, with higher levels under species with lower leaf quality.

Notizen: Abstract A valine-resistant mutant line, VAL-2, ofArabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. was identified by screening M 2 populations of ethylmethane-sulfonate-mutagenized seeds. The resistance was found to be due to a single, dominant, nuclear gene mutation. Assay of acetolactate synthase (ALS) indicated that the valine resistance in this mutant is caused by decreased sensitivity of ALS to the branched-chain amino acids, valine, leucine andisoleucine. A two fold decrease in apparentK m value for pyruvate of the mutant ALS enzyme was detected compared with that of the wild type. The sensitivity of the ALS enzyme to sulfonylurea, imidazolinone and triazolopyrimidine herbicides was not altered in the mutant. At the plant growth level the mutant was also resistant to valine plus leucine, but was sensitive to leucine orisoleucine alone. The mutant gene,var1, maps, or is very closely linked, toCSR1, the gene encoding acetolactate synthase inArabidopsis.
