Notizen: Ultrathin Co/Pt multilayers deposited directly on polymer substrates displayed poorer Kerr hysteresis loops than multilayers deposited on glass substrates. However, sputter-etching the polymer substrates with oxygen gas produced a square Kerr hysteresis loop. Analysis of the liquid-solid contact angle at the substrate surface confirmed that the low surface free energy of the substrate gives rise to poor magneto-optical (MO) properties of the deposited Co/Pt film. The MO properties are improved by etching. This is the result of an increase in the surface free energy, which is probably related to a chemical reaction involving oxygen atoms and not due to a change in the surface morphology. Higher surface free energy or better wetting of the surface made possible by etching probably brings about better nucleation of the deposited atoms in the initial stage of film growth and improves the crystalline quality of film, resulting in an improvement in the MO properties.

Notizen: In order to determine which elements added to the Co layer in Co/Pt multilayers will reduce the Curie temperature with no significant decrease in the Kerr rotation angle, the magneto-optical (MO) properties of (Co1−XMX)/Pt (M: additional elements) multilayers were studied, taking into account the change in MO properties brought about by varying Pt layer thickness while maintaining Co layer thickness. The addition of any element simultaneously decreases Curie temperature Tc and Kerr rotation angle almost proportionately to the reduction in saturation magnetization Ms . The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy Ku also declines with the addition of another element, but for Ni, Fe, and Tb the change is small. The ratio Q of Ku to demagnetization energy, which represents the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, degrades with X, due to the enlargement of Ms for Fe-added films, while Ni and Tb preserve a large Q. Although the Tb-added films distinctly change their interfacial structure above X=0.2, Ni and Fe hardly change the structure even if added in large amounts. As a result, the addition of Ni can control MO properties, keeping large effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy without influencing the structure. (Co,Ni)/Pt films possess lower Tc than Co/Pt films with the same Ms , and the disks using (Co,Ni)/Pt films achieved higher write sensitivity and higher write/erase cyclability owing to the lower Tc than Co/Pt disks with the same carrier-to-noise ratio. It would seem, therefore, that (CoNi)/Pt multilayers are more promising for practical MO disks.

Notizen: Nanometer-scale pits and mounds were fabricated on Au surface with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by applying voltage pulses between the PtIr tip and the substrate. Applying a positive pulse to the substrate generated a pit on the surface with high probability, while a negative pulse formed a mound. The mechanism of structure formation is inferred to be field evaporation, and the polarity dependence is related to the high threshold value of the PtIr alloy tip for negative field evaporation. Furthermore, the fabricated mound could be removed by applying a positive pulse, suggesting that the STM voltage pulse method may be applied to rewritable ultrahigh density recording. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of peritoneal insufflation with carbon dioxide on hepatic and renal blood flow have not been reported hitherto. We evaluated these effects in a porcine model of abdominal laparoscopic surgery. Seven anesthetized pigs underwent peritoneal insufflation in a step-wise manner to create intraabdominal pressures of 6, 12, 18 and 24 mmHg, and changes in the arterial and venous pressure, arterial blood gases, and hepatic and renal blood flow were monitored. Both the hepatic and renal blood flow decreased as the intraabdominal pressure increased. Therefore, in order to carry out laparoscopic abdominal surgery safely in patients with hepatic or renal impairment, low intraabdominal pressures or noninsufflating techniques are recommended.

Notizen: Summary The adenovirus E1 DNA region consists of two transcription units, E1A and E1B. In this paper we report that the E1A–E1B cotranscripts containing sequences of both the E1A and E1B regions are synthesized during adenovirus type 40 (Ad40) infection of A549 cells. Cytoplasmic RNA was isolated from Ad40-infected A549 cells at 24, 72, and 100h post infection (p.i.). The complementary (c) DNA was synthesized by reverse transcription using an oligo-dT primer and then amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers derived from the E1A and E1B regions. The cDNAs thus amplified were sequenced either directly or after cloning into bacteriophage M13 vectors. Analysis of cDNA indicated that the E1A–E1B cotranscripts are synthesized at 72h p.i., but not at 24 or 100h p.i. Nucleotide sequences of three cDNAs of the E1A–E1B cotranscripts indicated that the cotranscripts originate from the E1A promoter and lack sequences for both the E1A poly(A) site and E1B cap site. The splices create open reading frames for E1A–E1B fused polypeptides around the E1A–E1B junctions in these mRNAs. Most interestingly, the sequence analysis showed that the 5′ and 3′ splice junctions in the two E1A–E1B cotranscripts do not conform to the splice consensus GT-AG rule. Our results thus suggest that factor(s) which lead to unsual splicing in the E1 mRNAs are present in Ad40-infected A549 cells.
