Notizen: A homogeneous melting eutectic Au/Sn solder bump for flip-chip application has been developed. The underbump metallization consists of a WSi0.4N0.2-layer and a Ni-wetting layer. The solder is deposited as a sequence of alternating Au and Sn layers. The bump can be exposed to multiple fluxless reflow cycles. The reflow of the solder as deposited starts with a phase forming process in the solid state which results in an eutecticlike phase and the near eutectic δ and ζ phases. The δ and ζ phases dissolve during the liquid state stage of the reflow at temperatures between 300 and 350 °C. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract The Bankart lesion of the shoulder has long been associated with anterior instability. Our laboratory has developed a biomechanical model of the human shoulder which was used to determine the effects of creating a Bankart lesion on cadaveric specimens and then to compare the effects of two repair techniques. The model simulates the abducted, externally rotated position of the glenohumeral joint and uses pneumatic cylinders to simulate the rotator cuff forces. Specimens were tested intact following a partial Bankart lesion, following a complete Bankart lesion, and after performing a Bankart repair using three Mitek suture anchors. Finally, both the traditional and Mitek repairs were tested until failure. Strain in the inferior glenohumeral ligament (IGHL) and torque resistance was measured as an indication of instability of the joint. Strain was noted to decrease with increasing depth of lesion of the IGHL. Torsional rigidity of the shoulder decreased with increasing depth of lesion as well. Repairing the shoulder restores the strain and rigidity to control conditions. The mean load until failure was greater with the traditional repair than with the suture anchor technique. This study quantitates the effects of a Bankart lesion of the shoulder, and demonstrates that repairing the lesion with a suture anchor technique restores the biomechanics of the shoulder.

Notizen: Abstract The corrosion of sintered and sintered-plasma nitrided steels containing different alloying elements was evaluated through analysis of the potentiodynamic polarization curves of the samples at pH = 7, with 1.25 M KNO3 as electrolyte. The Fe-3.0% Ni and Fe-0.1% C sintered alloys show better performance in relation to electrochemical corrosion, than sintered pure iron samples. In addition, Fe-4.0% Mn, Fe-1.5% Mo and Fe-1.5% Si alloys exhibited increased anodic current densities in relation to the pure iron sample. After the nitriding process the anodic current densities of all samples containing an alloying element were considerably diminished. The sintered-nitrided pure iron sample was the only nitrided part whose current density was higher than the current density of the non-nitrided sample.

Notizen: Abstract The rat gene encoding oncomodulin (OM), a small calcium-binding protein, is under the control of a solo LTR derived from an endogenous intracisternal A-particle. The latter sequence is the only OM promoter analyzed so far. In order to study cell-type-specific OM expression in a species lacking LTR sequences in the OM locus, we initially synthesized an OM cDNA from mouse placenta. By sequencing, we found a 137-bp-long 5′ leader region that differed markedly from its rat counterpart but had high similarity to several mouse genomic sequences. Primers specific to this sequence in addition with primers specific for an exon 2/intron 2 sequence were used to screen a mouse ES cell line genomic P1 library. One positive clone contained the whole OM gene, including intron 1 of 25 kb and a 5′ flanking region of 27 kb lacking an LTR. The region upstream of exon 1 contains no TATA or CCAAT boxes but has a homopurine/homopyrimidine stretch of 102 bp as well as a (CA)22 repeat. The latter sequence is polymorphic and was therefore, used to map the OM gene to the distal end of the long arm of mouse Chromosome (Chr) 5 by interspecific backcross analysis. Additonally we localized the OM gene by in situ hybridization to the region G1-3 on Chr 5, confirming the genetic linkage results. Finally, the OM gene was found to be structurally conserved and to exist in a single copy in mammals.

Notizen: Poly(divinylbenzene)/poly(n-butyl acrylate) core/shell latexes were investigated using solid-state 13C-NMR. The (H)T1ρ relaxation time was found to be substantially affected by many of the seeded emulsion polymerization parameters, such as the core/shell ratio, the mode of addition of the second-stage monomer, the addition rate of the second-stage monomer, and the level of conversion of the seed latex at the time of addition of the second-stage monomer. The existence of an interphase region between the core and shell polymers was detected. Maximum interphase region thickness was achieved when the butyl acrylate was added under starved conditions. The thickness of this interphase layer was calculated to be 5-7 nm based on a model proposed by McBriety.1 Solid-state NMR was found to be an excellent spectroscopic technique to probe the interphase region in core/shell latexes. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The molecular basis for fracture was examined using a custom-built Dental Burr Grinding Instrument, which cuts at a depth of 500 nm per pass. A direct miniemulsification method was used to form uniform-sized latex particles from narrow molecular weight distribution, anionically synthesized polystyrenes. Several polystyrenes were examined as a function of molecular weight, and blends were made of high and low molecular weight polystyrenes. In addition, a broad molecular weight polystyrene was included for comparison. These latexes were dried and cleaned, and molded under mild conditions, followed by annealing for various lengths of time at 144°C. The Dental Burr Grinding Instrument measures the total energy required to fracture the sample. The total number of chains undergoing scission per unit volume was determined via GPC before and after the fracture process. Using an energy balance approach, the total number of chains undergoing pullout (from either side of the fracture surfaces) was estimated. In order to obtain a broader picture of the process, data collected by Mohammadi et al., and by Sambasivam et al., were integrated into the analysis. Basically, at very low molecular weights, ca. 32,000 g/mol, substantially 100% pullout occurs. At the midmolecular weight range, about 150,000 to 180,000 g/mol, chain scission and chain pullout contributions to the total energy are approximately equal. For very high molecular weights, the chain scission contribution is about 90%. A scaling relationship is proposed between the molecular weight of the polymer and the fraction of chains undergoing scission. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Film formation from poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latex and PMMA copolymer latex incorporating N-(iso-butoxymethyl)acrylamide (IBMA) or methacrylic acid (MAA) has been investigated in terms of the development of tensile strength as a function of annealing time and temperature. Tensile strength is developed through a combination of macromolecular interdiffusion and interfacial crosslinking. The relative rates of interdiffusion vs. crosslinking reactions were studied as a function of temperature and the chemical nature and concentration of the IBMA and MAA functional groups. For low concentrations of these two functional monomers it appears that polymer chain interdiffusion between adjacent latex particles during the film formation process dominates the kinetics of strength development. However, at higher IMBA and MAA concentrations, the higher glass transition temperature at the latex particle surface and intraparticle crosslinking hinders interdiffusion, as reflected by differences in the power law exponent values obtained from the log-log dependence of tensile strength on annealing time. The power law exponents were higher in the case of PMMA than for both IBMA- and MAA-containing copolymers. There was a greater influence temperature on the tensile behavior for the MAA copolymer system as compared to the IBMA copolymer. In the interfacially crosslinked latex polymer system, there is competition between the interdiffusion and crosslinking mechanisms in determining the final mechanical strength of films during the annealing process. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
