    Notes: We have used a simple approach to fabricate buried InGaAs/InP quantum wires with widths down to 15 nm. Combining high resolution electron beam lithography and selective wet chemical etching only the InP cap layer of an InGaAs/InP quantum well is locally removed. InGaAs surface quantum wells are formed in the etched parts of the samples, where the energy band discontinuity of the quantum well is replaced by the high vacuum barrier. Therefore a lateral potential barrier is induced, which confines the carriers to the InP covered wire regions. In addition, the lateral potential can be strongly increased by a selective thermal intermixing step. The luminescence spectra of the wires show significant lateral quantization effects with energy shifts up to 13 meV and high quantum efficiencies up to room temperature. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The structure of the ground and lowest two excited states of H2NO have been determined in large scale configuration interaction calculations using a multiconfiguration self-consistent description of the molecular orbitals. These treatments are based on a systematic building of the correlation contribution which has been designed to account for the characteristics of the nitroxide group. This approach shows that the aminoxyl functional group is more than a three electron group shared by two atoms, but, in fact, a nine electron entity. Our best estimate of the geometry of the ground electronic state, obtained after second-order configuration interaction using a large basis of atomic natural orbitals, is pyramidal. However, since the potential depth between 0° and 40° is lower or of the same order of magnitude as the estimated inversion frequency, the conclusion that this molecule behaves like a planar system is totally justified. The structure of the excited (n−π*) and (π−π*) states have been determined and the transitions energies are in accordance with the experimental results on the highly substituted stable nitroxide radicals. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory have been performed on Cr(CO)6, (η6-C6H6)Cr(CO)3 and (η6-C6H6)Cr(CO)2(CS) at the local and nonlocal level of theory using different functionals. Good agreement is obtained with experiment for both optimized geometries and metal-ligand binding energies. In particular, a comparison of metal-arene bond energies calculated for the (η6-C6H6)Cr(CO)3 and (η6-C6H6)Cr(CO)2(CS) complexes correlates well with kinetic data demonstrating that substitution of one CO group by CS leads to an important labilizing effect of this bond, which may be primarily attributed to a larger π-backbonding charge transfer to the CS ligand as compared with CO.

    Notes: Abstract In Canada, medical instruments containing mercury (Hg) are still widely used in hospitals. These are mostly thermometers and sphygmomanometers. Mercury present in these instruments does not in itself constitute a risk of contamination since this metal is contained within a closed system. However, breakage, inadequate maintenance and disposal of such instruments can expose workers and the public to this toxic substance. In Quebec, 80% of the 28 hospitals surveyed still use Hg sphygmomanometers and 45% Hg thermometers. Besides, 35% do not have any recovery procedures in case of spillage and most mercury spills are apparently not reported. Two main courses of action are recommended: the gradual replacement of these medical instruments by aneroid sphygmomanometers and electronic thermometers, and the establishment and communication, in the form of a handbook, of guidelines to handle and dispose of mercury safely.

    Notes: Abstract •Background: Endogenous posterior uveitis (PU) can be associated with systemic diseases, and certain forms have strong association with HLA antigens. Much less is known regarding intermediate uveitis (IU). The purpose of this study was to determine whether IU is associated with the HLA system and whether it can be associated with systemic symptoms. •Methods: In 179 consecutive patients consulting for uveitis, a detailed history was obtained and a physical examination performed. HLA typing for 71 HLAA, B, DR and DQ antigens, laboratory tests, and radiography of the chest, sinuses, and sacroiliac joints were systematically performed. •Results: Thirty-two patients (18%) had IU; 51 (28.5%) had PU and constituted our internal control group. Nine of the patients with IU (28%) had the HLA-A28 antigen, compared with 8.1 % of a healthy control population and 8.6% of the patients with PU (P 〈 0.001). An associated disease was found in four patients with IU (12.5%) (none was HLA-A28) and in 45% of the patients with PU (P 〈 0.01). Some 67% of HLA-A28 patients with IU had arthralgias affecting the knee(s), compared with 17% of non-HLA-A28 patients and 18% of patients with PU (P〈0.05 and P〈0.01 respectively); 55% had gonalgias and hypocomplementemia compared with 9% and 2% respectively (P 〈 0.01 and P 〈 0.001). •Conclusions: IU is significantly associated with HLA-A28; patients having this antigen may represent a subset of the disease characterized by an increased prevalence of arthralgias and hypocomplementemia.

    Notes: Abstract •Background: To test the intra-observer, intra-photographic variability of two-dimensional measurements of the optic nerve head we used computer-assisted planimetry. Depending on the variability, we calculated the confidence intervals of the optic disc parameters which could be indicative of glaucomatous damage on follow-up. •Methods: Slides of the optic disc were taken from 10 eyes of 10 patients (n = 6 open angle glaucoma, n = 4 ocular hypertension) using a Zeiss fundus camera. All eyes were evaluated 10 times within a random sequence on 10 different days. We obtained the absolute values of the disc radii and the cup radii in steps of 1, 10, and 45 deg in predefined quadrants and the mean radii. •Results: The confidence interval of the cup radius on follow-up, depending on sector size, ranged between 62 and 38 % for small cups (radius 0.2 mm) and between 12 and 7% for large cups (radius 0.8 mm). The confidence intervals of the cup/disc ratio distinguishable from the disc boundary, depending on sector size, ranged between 0.81 and 0.89 for small discs (radius 0.5 mm) and from 0.90 to 0.94 for large discs (radius 1.0 mm). The confidence intervals of the cup/disc ratio indicating an increase on the cup radius in follow-up, distinguishable from the boundary of the disc, ranged, depending on sector size, between 0.57 and 0.75 for small discs (radius 0.5 mm) and from 0.81 to 0.89 for large discs (radius 1.0 mm). 9 Conclusion: The smaller the disc, the more difficult is the detection of glaucomatous damage, and the larger the cup, the more difficult is the detection of progression of glaucomatous damage.
