    Notes: Evolution of waves subject to a randomly varying growth rate is considered and the statistical properties of the waves are calculated in terms of the mean, variance, and correlation time of the growth rate. This enables stochastic growth to be studied without needing full knowledge of the microphysics. However, where the microphysics is understood, this approach also allows it to be easily incorporated into studies of larger-scale phenomena involving stochastic growth. Stochastic differential equations and Fokker–Planck equations are obtained, which describe the wave evolution in the presence of a variety of linear and nonlinear processes and boundary conditions, and it is shown that these phenomena can be diagnosed observationally through their effects on the statistical distribution of the wave field strengths. The results are particularly useful for waves with small dispersion, where they explain the strong wave clumping often observed in nature and emphasize the role of marginal stability in setting the level about which fluctuations occur and in determining their magnitude. Application to type III solar radio bursts illustrates many of the main results and verifies and generalizes earlier conclusions reached using a less rigorous approach. In particular, a new condition for marginally stable propagation of type III solar electron beams is found. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Elevated temperature is one of 4 cardinal inflammatory signs. Previous work indicates that Subgingival temperature assessments are accurate and reliable, and provide objective, quantitative information over a broad 10°C range, in small 0.10°C increments with a direct, immediate report on the inflammatory status at the pocket base. However, complicating the use and interpretation of Subgingival temperature assessments are its 3 forms: actual Subgingival temperature, sublingual temperature minus Subgingival temperature (temperature differential), and a temperature indicator light. We reasoned that if one could determine which of the temperature assessments reflected the periodontal condition, and which were independent variables, they would provide new and unique information about the inflammatory status of the periodontium. We also reasoned that by providing objective, quantitative data over a broad range, Subgingival temperature should reduce the sample size required to obtain significance in clinical trials. Therefore, the purpose of this study was 2-fold: (1) to determine whether the 3 Subgingival temperature assessments could differentiate between clinically defined periodontal health and disease; (2) to determine whether the 3 assessments were dependent or independent clinical variables. The data indicated that all 3 subgingival temperature assessment methods differentiated between clinically-defined periodontal health and disease (all p〈0.02). All 3 assessments also correlated significantly (all r〉0.03), but modestly (all r〉0.49), with Weeding on probing. Based on scatter-plot matrices and common factor analysis, the data indicated that only actual subgingival temperature and temperature differential were independent variables. Taken together, this data indicates that subgingival temperature and temperature differential provide unique information about the periodontal inflammatory state. Power calculations indicated that the temperature differential may significantly reduce the subject number required to achieve significance in clinical trials examining gingival inflammation. Because of the body's rapid temperature response, these assessments may also significantly reduce the time required for gingival inflammation trials.

    Notes: Abstract The boundary integral method is applied to model the initial motion of two-dimensional or cylindrical deformable gas bubbles in an inviscid, incompressible fluid. Following the success of recent boundary integral studies to predict the qualitative behaviour of a single gas bubble, this numerical study is extended to consider the interaction of several bubbles. Surface tension, relative initial position and volume are all found to be important factors affecting the bubble interaction, jet formation, “trapping” of fluid between bubbles and bubble shedding. As well as computing the evolution of the bubble surfaces, consideration of the pressure fields and resulting instantaneous streamlines is given.

    Notes: Abstract A new approach to the theory of mode coupling in an inhomogeneous, birefringent medium is used to treat mode coupling in a magnetized plasma with a twisted magnetic field. The twist introduces a resonance, corresponding to the rate of twisting being equal to the rate of generalized Faraday rotation. When this resonance occurs it introduces a new regime of strong mode coupling. The implications of this regime are discussed in connection with the long-standing problem in solar radiophysics that mode coupling appears to be stronger than theory implies, but no obvious resolution of the problem is found.

    Notes: Abstract We have identified a novel ubiquitin conjugating enzyme gene, L-UBC, which maps to human Chromosome (Chr) 14q24.3. This is also the location of the major early onset familial Alzheimer's disease gene (FAD3). L-UBC encodes a protein that demonstrates homology to the yeast ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, UBC-4, and human UbcH5. Their functions are to ubiquitinate specific proteins targeted for degradation. The protein also exhibits very strong homology to a rabbit protein, E2-F1, which mediates p53 degradation driven by papilloma virus E6 protein in vitro. The accumulation of specific proteins that have undergone aberrant processing in neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques is the classic pathological feature in brains of Alzheimer's disease patients. Abnormal ubiquitination has previously been suggested to play a role in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease. This gene therefore represents a plausible candidate gene for FAD3.
