    Notes: Abstract A conditioned stimulus previously paired with electric footshock produced an increase in blood pressure in conscious, freely moving rats. The conditioned pressor response was reproducible. Intracerebroventricular injection of the nicotinic receptor antagonists hexamethonium (1–10 μg) or pentolinium (10 μg) but not the muscarinic receptor antagonist methylatropine (3 μg) produced an inhibition of the conditioned pressor response, whereas intraarterial injection of hexamethonium (10 μg) did not affect the response. Intraventricular injection of the cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine (3–10 μg) produced an enhancement of the conditioned pressor response. These results are consistent with the possibility that central nicotinic receptors play a role in the expression of the emotionally conditioned pressor response in rats.

    Notes: Conclusions In view of the marked increase in urine methanol concentration during the continued injection of an antimold agent as observed in our animal experiments, it was considered that the workers engaged in mildewproofing spraying of antimold agents were in a state of intoxication due to methanol at the time of their spraying operations. Moreover, the results of our animal experiments showed that 10 days after the discontinuation of injection, the blood and urine methanol concentrations recovered to their previous values before the injection of the antimold agent. This was consistent with the fact that the urine methanol concentration of the mildewproofing workers was within the normal limit 10 days after the spraying operation. Accordingly, to prevent poisoning from antimold agent during mildewproofing operations, we advise the following measures: 1) Wearing a mask during the spraying operation, 2) Using ethanol (at a concentration of 10% or less rather than a large amount) instead of methanol. These countermeasures were determined on the basis of our estimation that it might be possible to prevent methanol-induced health impairment if the use of methanol is discontinued.

    Notes: Abstract In our previous study, we found that the majority of locus coeruleus (LC) neurons were inhibited by caloric stimulation and that the inhibition was mediated by gamma aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptors. It has been reported that the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi (PrH) sends GABAergic inputs to the LC. In the present study, an attempt was made to determine whether PrH neurons contribute to the LC neuronal inhibition caused by caloric stimulation. We characterized the neuronal response in the PrH to caloric stimulation in rats. About three-fourths of PrH neurons showed various responses to both ipsi- and contralateral caloric stimulation, suggesting that PrH neurons receive bilateral vestibular inputs. However, these neurons were not activated by antidromic stimulation of the LC. The remaining one-fourth of the PrH neurons that were antidromically activated did not respond to caloric stimulation. Lesions in the PrH did not attenuate the LC neuronal inhibition caused by caloric stimulation. These findings suggest that the inhibition of LC neurons caused by caloric stimulation is not mediated by the PrH.
