Notes: A special procedure is applied to remove the non-physical distortion that always appears when numerically calculating velocity and related quantities in the close vicinity of a discretized vortex sheet. The procedure is used in conjunction with a semi-Lagrangian boundary integral method to study the flowfield beneath free surface standing water waves. Pressure, velocity and acceleration are calculated below the wave and some aspects of crest formation are investigated. At large depths results confirm the existence of an unattenuated oscillatory pressure component, giving behavior consistent with previously known theory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Objective To investigate a possible relationship between a deficiency in serum selenium concentration and first trimester miscarriage.Design An observational study.Setting A teaching hospital in South Wales.Participants and methods Serum selenium, albumin and total protein concentration were measured in 40 women admitted with first trimester nonrecurrent miscarriage. The results were compared with an equal number of age-matched nonpregnant healthy volunteers, and also from 40 pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic for booking in the first trimester. Results A reduction in serum selenium normally occurs in the first trimester of pregnancies that progress to term. However, a further statistically highly significant decrease in serum selenium was observed in those women who miscarried. Conclusion Further studies are required to assess the potential benefits of selenium supplements.

Notes: Unique place-names are essential for scientific fieldwork in Antarctica. This shorter contribution describes how duplication of place-names in British Antarctic Territory has been avoided by the systematic naming of geographically related features according to groups of associated ideas. One such theme, commemorating pioneers in the development of photogrammetry, recognizes the important contribution of photogrammetry to Antarctic mapping and research.

Notes: Summary. Variation in Lateglacial lithic assemblages has led some researchers to sub-divide the British Later Upper Palaeolithic into two or more typologically distinct phases (Campbell 1977; Jacobi 1988). Until now, however, the chronological relationships between the different phases have been difficult to demonstrate. In this paper we present new dating evidence for two distinct blade technologies of Lateglacial type found in southwest Britain. The first corresponds to the ‘Creswellian’(as defined by Jacobi 1991; Jacobi and Roberts 1992), and is dated to the earlier part of the Lateglacial Interstadial (c. 13–12,000 years BP); the second technology compares with European Federmessergruppen assemblages (literally, ‘penknife group’ industries, as described in Schwabedissen 1954) of the ‘forested’ phase of the Interstadial (c. 12–11,000 years BP). In addition to presenting the new dates, this paper explores the implications of treating the technologies as separate entities and puts forward preliminary ideas on differences in raw material use and other human subsistence behaviour.

Notes: Abstract Ceramic model catalyst materials of general formula SrSn1−x Sb x O3 are synthesised by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction shows the materials to be single phase over the composition range 0 ⩽x⩽0.085, with a second phase, identified as SrSb2O5, being produced at higher antimony doping levels. XPS, Auger electron spectroscopy and valence band photoemission show strong segregation of Sb to the surface of the material even within the single phase regime. The catalytic properties of the materials are examined using methanol oxidation as a test reaction. The activity and selectivity to formaldehyde production shown by these materials is found to be strongly correlated with the attainment of the bulk solubility limit of Sb in the SrSnO3 perovskite host.

Notes: Abstract When covered by moistened lint-free gauze, the larvae (ammocoetes) of the lampreyGeotria australis survived, without apparent discomfort, for 4 days in water-saturated air at 10, 15 and 20°C. In air, the mean standard rates of O2 consumption of medium to large ammocoetes ofG. australis (000000000;=0.52 g) at 10, 15 and 20°C were 14.5, 35.7 and 52.1 μl·g−1·h−1, respectively. At 15°C, the slope of the relationship between log O2 consumption (μlO2·h−1) and log body weight for ammocoetes over a wide range in body weight was 0.987. TheQ 10s for rate of O2 consumption between 10 and 15°C, 15 and 20°C and 10 and 20°C were 4.9, 2.9 and 3.6, respectively. Our results and observations of the ammocoetes suggest that, when out of water, larvalG. australis derives most of its O2 requirements from cutaneous respiration, particularly at lower temperatures. This would be facilitated by the small size and elongate shape (and thus a relatively high surface-to-volume ratio), low metabolic rate, thin dermis, extensive subdermal capillary network and high haemoglobin concentration of larvalG. australis.

Notes: Abstract  When covered by moistened lint-free gauze, the larvae (ammocoetes) of the lamprey Geotria australis survived, without apparent discomfort, for 4 days in water-saturated air at 10, 15 and 20 °C. In air, the mean standard rates of O2 consumption of medium to large ammocoetes of G. australis (x¯=0.52 g) at 10, 15 and 20 °C were 14.5, 35.7 and 52.1 μl⋅g-1⋅h-1, respectively. At 15 °C, the slope of the relationship between log O2 consumption (μl O2⋅h-1) and log body weight for ammocoetes over a wide range in body weight was 0.987. The Q 10s for rate of O2 consumption between 10 and 15 °C, 15 and 20 °C and 10 and 20 °C were 4.9, 2.9 and 3.6, respectively. Our results and observations of the ammocoetes suggest that, when out of water, larval G. australis derives most of its O2 requirements from cutaneous respiration, particularly at lower temperatures.
