    Notes: Kuwait is a desert country where the prevailing high temperatures, low humidity, and scant vegetation suggest a low prevalence of allergy. We evaluated the prevalence of atopic sensitization (presence of allergen-specific IgE) among young adult blood donors by screening a total of 505 subjects (male : female ratio 1.6) with mean age of 28.4 years (range 18–50 years). The Pharmacia CAP-Phadiatop® test, which detects serum IgE specific to most common airborne allergens, was used. Some of the specific sensitizing allergens were also identified by the related CAP-RAST method. Sensitization was detected in 223 of the 505 subjects (44.2%) screened. Kuwaiti nationals had a significantly higher prevalence rate (50.2%) than non-Kuwaitis (34.2%) (χ2= 8.6, P〈0.003). The highest prevalence rate was found among male Kuwaitis (53.8%). The prevalence of current or previous allergic disease (subject-reported) was 20.6%. Bermuda grass, house-dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus), and Chenopodium album were the most prevalent sensitizing allergens, with frequencies of 53.6%, 52.7%, and 50.9%, respectively, among the sensitized subjects (corresponding to 23.7%, 23.3%, and 22.5%, respectively) for the entire population. Sensitization increased with age, but only among the expatriates, younger Kuwaitis being as frequently sensitized as the older ones. Polysensitization was found to be common. Of the 109 CAP-RAST-positive subjects, 71 (65.1%) were sensitized to more than one allergen, and 30 of these (42.3%) were sensitized to four or more allergens. These results show that atopy is highly prevalent among young adults in Kuwait, and the higher prevalence rate among nationals than expatriates suggests the involvement of genetic or local environmental factors. The results also confirm that mite and plant pollens may be major sensitizing allergens even in a desert environment.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of rescheduling a facility modeled as a single machine in the face of newly arrived jobs with part-type dependent setup times. The facility contains a number of jobs that have been assigned due dates and scheduled so as to meet them. We wish to insert the new jobs into the existing schedule in a manner that will minimize the disruption of the jobs in the system and minimize the total weighted completion time or the maximum completion time of the new jobs. We provide a polynomial-time algorithm for the maximum completion time problem, prove that the total weighted completion time problem is NP-hard in the strong sense and study several of its special cases. In particular, we show that the case with reverse-agreeable weights (of which the unit weight problem is a special case) can be solved in polynomial time when the number of part types is fixed. We also present two heuristics for the problem with arbitrary weights and develop data-dependent worst-case error bounds. Extensive computational experiments show that the heuristics consistently obtain near-optimal solutions in very reasonable CPU times.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we analyze the problem of learning and updating of uncertainty in Dirichlet models, where updating refers to determining the conditional distribution of a single variable when some evidence is known. We first obtain the most general family of prior-posterior distributions which is conjugate to a Dirichlet likelihood and we identify those hyperparameters that are influenced by data values. Next, we describe some methods to assess the prior hyperparameters and we give a numerical method to estimate the Dirichlet parameters in a Bayesian context, based on the posterior mode. We also give formulas for updating uncertainty by determining the conditional probabilities of single variables when the values of other variables are known. A time series approach is presented for dealing with the cases in which samples are not identically distributed, that is, the Dirichlet parameters change from sample to sample. This typically occurs when the population is observed at different times. Finally, two examples are given that illustrate the learning and updating processes and the time series approach.

    Notes: Abstract Porous silicon layers were formed on diffused layers. Both boron and phosphorus impurities were thermally diffused using solid sources in n-Si, p-Si, n-epi/Si and p-epi/Si substrates of various resistivities. Porous silicon on these layers was formed by electrochemical and chemical etching under various etching conditions. Strong visible luminescence was observed from these porous silicon structures. Infrared absorption studies indicated that surface molecule identities are immaterial to the enhancement or degradation of photoluminescence.

    Notes: Abstract Leptochloa fusca (L.) Kunth (kallar grass) has previously been found to exhibit high rates of nitrogen fixation. A series of experiments to determine the level of biological nitrogen fixation using N isotopic dilution were carried out in nutrient solution and saline soil. These studies indicated an agronomically significant amount of nitrogen being fixed in soil. Kallar grass has a similar growth habitat to rice. Therefore similar studies were carried out with rice after isolating various diazotrophs from the roots which were also screened for their ability to produce auxin (IAA). Five such strains namely Azospirillum lipoferum N-4, Azospirillum brasilense Wb-3, Azoarcus K-1, Pseudomonas 96-51, Zoogloea Ky-1 were selected for inoculating two rice varieties i.e. NIAB-6 and BAS-370 under aseptic laboratory conditions. The nitrogen fixed was quantified using the N isotopic dilution method. Variety BAS-370 had nearly 70% nitrogen derived from atmosphere (Ndfa) when inoculated with Azospirillum N-4. Similar studies with the mixed inoculum using N fertilizer in the micro plots indicated that nearly 29% of plant nitrogen was derived from the atmosphere.

In vitro cultivation of the parasite plays an important role in the study and treatment of the disease. In the present study a new, simple and cheap yet reliable egg based bi-phasic culture medium is described which is capable of supporting long term cultivation of Leishmania promastigote in vitro without inclusion of foetal bovine serum or blood.
