Notizen: Between fanuary 1990 and October 1992, we implanted 16 steroid-eluting ventricular epicardial pacing leads (Medtronic 10295A and 10295B/4965) in 12 patients. There were 8 males and 4 females ranging in age from 3 months to 49 years (mean 8.7 ± 13.2, median 6.0years). Structural cardiac disease was present in 11 of 12 patients. Follow-up ranged from 3–73 months postimplant (mean 35.7 ± 22.3, median 28.5 months). Lead fracture (10295A) occurred in 1 of 12 patients. Of the remaining 11 patients, 8 of 11 have very low long-term pacing thresholds. Unexpectedly, 3 patients demonstrated precipitous threshold increases from 3 months to 3.5 years postimplant. Although no deaths resulted in these exit block patients, 1 of 3 exit block patients developed marked worsening of congestive heart failure. We reviewed and analyzed the data obtained at 4 weeks postimplant for all of the 10295A and 4965 patients in the entire Medtronic clinical study database. Using the criterion of a 4 week postimplant pacing threshold ≥ 0.12 ms (5 V), we found that the long-term risk of eventual exit block was 27.3% for the 10295A lead (P = 0.005) and 7.5% for the 10295B/4965 lead (P = 0.03). We, therefore, recommend that in patients implanted with the 4965 steroideluting epicardial lead, ventricular pacing thresholds ≥ 0.12 ms (5 V) measured at 4 weeks postimplant should prompt frequent threshold testing to detect late and potentially sudden ventricular pacing threshold increases.

Notizen: Abstract  The authors propose definitions and terminology for protocols on traceability links, generally to the international system of units, for specific chemical-analytical measurements in accordance with recognized principles of science. These definitions and terms could be useful in science, technology, commerce or law. A chain of such links leads from a measurand in a sample up to a unit in the International System of Units or, if unavailable, to a value on an internationally recognized measurement scale. The quality of such a chain is quantified by combining all recognized uncertainties estimated for all its links. These uncertainties of the measured values arise from many potential error sources. The protocols should give details of specific uses of reference materials, measuring instruments and standard measurement methods.

Notizen: Abstract Tamarix ramosissima (Tamaricaceae) is a woody phreatophyte that has invaded thousands of hectares of floodplain habitat in the southwestern U.S. In this study, we examined the response of gas exchange and stem sap flow of Tamarix and three co-occurring native phreatophytes (Pluchea sericea (Asteraceae), Prosopis pubescens (Fabaceae) and Salix exigua (Salicaceae)) to drought conditions in an early successional floodplain community in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada. In an analysis of a size/age series of each species across the whole floodplain (both mature and successional stands), stem growth rate was lowest for Tamarix. However, along the same successional chronosequence, Tamarix came to dominate the 50+ year old stands with dense thickets of high stem density. Xylem sap flow, when expressed on a sapwood area basis, was highest in Tamarix under early drought conditions, but comparable between the four species toward the end of the summer dry season. Multivariate analysis of the gas exchange data indicated that the four species differentiated based on water use under early drought conditions and separated based on plant water potential and leaf temperature (indices of drought effects) at the end of the summer dry season. This analysis suggests that the invasive Tamarix is the most drought tolerant of the four species, whereas Salix transpires the most water per unit leaf surface area and is the least tolerant of seasonal water stress. Therefore, Salix appears to be well adapted to early successional communities. However, as floodplains in this arid region become more desiccated with age, Tamarix assumes greater dominance due to its superior drought tolerance relative to native phreatophytes and its ability to produce high density stands and high leaf area.
