    Notes: We describe an instrument designed to monitor molecular motions in multiphasic, weakly fluorescent microscopic systems. It combines synchrotron radiation, a low irradiance polarized microfluorimeter, and an automated, multiframing, single-photon-counting data acquisition system, and is capable of continually accumulating subnanosecond resolved anisotropy decays with a real-time resolution of about 60 s. The instrument has initially been built to monitor ligand–receptor interactions in living cells, but can equally be applied to the continual measurement of any dynamic process involving fluorescent molecules, that occurs over a time scale from a few minutes to several hours. As a particularly demanding demonstration of its capabilities, we have used it to monitor the environmental constraints imposed on the peptide hormone epidermal growth factor during its endocytosis and recycling to the cell surface in live cells. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Mastocytosis is a rare disorder with serious anaesthetic implications. Anaesthetic management is hazardous since trauma, stress, extremes of temperature and drugs may precipitate intra-operative mast cell degranulation. Release of histamine and other mast cell mediators can lead to profound cardiovascular collapse and even death. We present a case report of a patient with mastocytosis who suffered cardiac arrest during anaesthesia. Anaphylactoid/anaphylactic shock may be delayed and lack supporting signs of histamine release such as cutaneous flushing and bronchospasm.

    Notes: A total of 56 salmon was tagged in the Usk estuary using combined acoustic and radio tags. Those fish migrating within the estuary oscillated with the tide over c. 10 km, being towards the seaward end at low water and moving upstream on the flood tide. Fish migrating through the estuary moved upstream on the flood tide and stemmed displacement downstream during the ebb. These findings, together with information on the hydrodynamics of the estuary, indicate that the fish utilize tidal currents to migrate passively in their preferred direction.

    Notes: Abstract  The present study characterizes a previously reported adaptive phenomenon in a somatosensory-motor system involved in directional control of locomotor trajectory through foot contact with the floor. We call this the “podokinetic” (PK) system. Podokinetic adaptation was induced in six subjects by stepping in-place over the axis of a horizontally rotating disc over a range of disc angular velocities (11.25–90°/s) and durations (7.5–60 min). After adaptation, subjects were blindfolded and attempted to step in-place on the floor without turning. Instead they all rotated relative to space. The rate of the “podokinetic afterrotation” (PKAR) was linearly related to stimulus amplitude up to 45°/s, and the ratio of initial PKAR velocity to that of the adaptive stimulus was approximately 1:3. PKAR exhibited exponential decay, which was composed of “short-” and “long-term” components with “discharging” time constants on the order of 6–12 min and 1–2 h, respectively. The effect of stimulus duration on PKAR revealed a “charging” time constant that approximated that of the short-term component. A significant suppression of PKAR occurred during the 1st min of the postadaptive response, suggesting functional interaction between the PK and vestibular systems during the period of vestibular stimulation. During PKAR subjects perceived no self-rotation, indicating that perception as well as locomotor control of spatial orientation were remodeled by adaptation of the PK system.

    Notes: Abstract Modern ionosondes make almost simultaneous measurements of the time rate of change of phase path in different directions and at different heights. By combining these ‘Doppler’ measurements and angles of arrival of many such radar echoes it is possible to derive reliable estimates of plasma drift velocity for a defined scattering volume. Results from both multifrequency and kinesonde-mode soundings at 3-min resolution show that the Dynasonde-derived F-region drift velocity is in good agreement with EISCAT, despite data loss during intervals of ‘blanketing’ by intense E-region ionisation. It is clear that the Tromsø Dynasonde, employing standard operating modes, gives a reliable indication of overall convection patterns during quiet to moderately active conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) successfully differentiated homoeologous genomes in the interspecific hybrid Allium cepa × fistulosum, thus allowing the detection of reciprocal crossover events as label exchanges in separating anaphase I chromosomes. Three of the eight chromosome pairs were positively identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to rDNA sequences. There was a general similarity of the GISH-based label exchange frequencies and metaphase I chiasma frequencies, but with a 20% deficit of chiasmata. Reasons for this apparent deficit are discussed. The locations of chiasmata and label exchanges are in broad agreement.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose: This study wax designed to examine changes in peripheral plasma substance-P and -K levels, their association with follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone release in normal reproductive cycles in humans, and their correlation with plasma estradiol and progesterone. Methods: Fourteen healthy, normally menstruating women underwent daily blood sampling (cycle day 4, 4–14 days) for measurement of estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone, substances-P and -K, and daily transvaginal ultrasounds assessing follicular growth and documentation of ovulation. Results: Estradiol peaked on day 13, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone peaked on day 14, and progesterone began an exponential increase on about day 13. Conclusions: In contrast to other experimental designs using in vitro or in vivo rat or monkey tissue, peripheral levels of substances-P (P = 0.8391) and -K (P = 0.3205) reflected no modulation related to midcycle gonadotropin release in cycling woman.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from traffic and other sources in urban areas is a cause for concern about public health. Canister, chemical derivatisation, particulate sampling and adsorption sampling techniques were used to measure VOC concentrations of a wide range of compounds (C6-C40) during a four day campaign in south London with subsequent laboratory analysis of the samples. Compounds quantified included alkanes, mono- and poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Also the first sequential measurements of carbonyl compounds (C1-C8) in a UK urban area are presented. Results from canister and adsorption sampling methods are compared. A comparison of the results with other urban data is presented and the temporal variations in VOC concentrations were interpreted with reference to the prevalent wind speeds and directions. The CALINE4 line source dispersion model was generally successful in reproducing the daytime 12 hour average concentrations of selected VOCs.

In this paper, we investigate in detail 8-run two-level designs.
