    Notes: We theoretically discuss the local moment formation and the hyperfine field behavior of nonmagnetic (s−p and noble) impurities diluted in ferromagnetic rare-earth compounds GdX (X=Zn, Cd). It is experimentally observed in these systems that all impurities enter substitutionally at the "nonmagnetic" X lattice site, creating a strong local charge perturbation. In our simplified model, one calculates the local magnetic moment in the perturbed conduction band at the origin (a charge perturbed X site). The polarization of the conduction band arises from the Gd 4f moments and the conduction electron polarization produced by the host magnetic moment at the origin is treated within the Born approximation. The general trend of the experimental hyperfine field data is well reproduced by our self-consistent calculations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The kaolin deposits of the Amazon region of Brazil are of lateritic origin, modified by subsequent reduced lacustrine and/or swamp environment. They are contemporaneous with lateritic bauxites found in the same region, all formed from aluminium silicate rocks. These are principally sedimentary rocks from the Cretaceous period (Itapecuru and Alter do Chão), but also include metamorphic and felsic volcanic rocks. After erosion of the upper part of these profiles they became locally a substratum for swampy and/or lacustrine environments mostly developed over the clayey saprolitic horizon where kaolin occurs. The saprolitic horizon is made up mainly of iron-mottled kaolinite which has been subject to an intense deferrification, which has increased the kaolin brightness and thickness. The kaolins are basically made up of well-crystallized kaolinite, quartz, sometimes illite-muscovite, anatase and hematite. In certain locations, crandallite-goyazite is also present. The deposits studied differ from each other in the mineral content levels, concentration of principal elements and in trace element distribution. The greatest quantity of quartz and, consequently SiO2, is intrinsically related to the type of parent rock. Small sedimentary deposits occur in alluvial flood plains located not very far from the lateritic source.

    Notes: Abstract Abnormalities of the enteric nervous system are thought to explain the pathophysiology of motility disorders. Our aim was to determine if particular classes of enteric neurons are affected in slow transit constipation (STC). Specimens were taken from the terminal ileum and ascending, transverse and descending colon of patients undergoing subtotal colectomy for STC. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antisera to neuron-specific enolase, tachykinin, leu-enkephalin, choline acetyltransferase, vasoactive intestinal peptide, nitric oxide synthase, tyrosine hydroxylase and neuropeptide Y. The density of nerve fibres labelled with these antibodies in each layer was compared with age-matched controls. The density of nerve fibres with tachykinin and enkephalin immunoreactivity was reduced in the colonic circular muscle of the 15 patients with STC, whereas innervation of all other layers was normal. This reduction of tachykinin-immunoreactive nerve fibres also occurred in nine of the 12 specimens of terminal ileum examined. No difference was detected in the density or distribution of nerve fibres using the other antisera. Excitatory nerve fibres are present in the circular muscle in STC but they are deficient in tachykinins and enkephalin.

    Notes: Abstract An extracellular α-amylase produced by the thermophilic bacterium Thermus filiformis Ork A2 was purified from cell-free culture supernatant by ion exchange chromatography. The molecular mass was estimated to be 60 000 Da by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The enzyme was rich in both basic and hydrophobic amino acids, presenting the following NH2-terminal amino acid sequence: Thr-Ala-Asp-Leu-Ile-Val-Lys-Ile-Asn-Phe. Amylolytic activity on soluble starch was optimal at pH 5.5–6.0 and 95°C, and the enzyme was stable in the pH range of 4.0–8.0. Calcium enhanced thermostability at temperatures above 80°C, increasing the half-life of activity to more than 8 h at 85°C, 80 min at 90°C, and 19 min at 95°C. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) inhibited amylase activity, the inhibition being reversed by the addition of calcium or strontium ions. The α-amylase was also inhibited by copper and mercuric ions, and p-chloromercuribenzoic acid, the latter being reversed in the presence of dithiothreitol. Dithiothreitol and β-mercaptoethanol activated the enzyme. The α-amylase exhibited Michaelis-Menten kinetics for starch, with a K m of 5.0 mg·ml−1 and k cat/K m of 5.2 × 105 ml·mg−1 s−1. Similar values were obtained for amylose, amylopectin, and glycogen. The hydrolysis pattern was similar for maltooligosaccharides and polysaccharides, with maltose being the major hydrolysis product. Glucose and maltotriose were generated as secondary products, although glucose was produced in high levels after a 6-h digestion. To our knowledge this is the first report of the characterization of an α-amylase from a strain of the genus Thermus.

    Notes: Abstract  Retrograde tracing, combined with immunohistochemistry, was used to study the projections of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-accumulating neurones within the ileum of the guinea-pig, with confocal microscopy being used to characterise further their morphology. Two classes of neurones in the myenteric plexus, capable of taking up 5-HT or analogues, were distinguished. One class had Dogiel type I morphology with lamellar dendrites, was located on the edge or in the middle of ganglia and lacked immunoreactivity for somatostatin (SOM). The other class had smooth ovoid cell bodies with multiple filamentous dendrites and a single axon and represented a subset of the SOM-immunoreactive interneurones in the myenteric plexus. Varicosities immunoreactive for 5-HT alone, 5-HT/SOM or SOM alone were present in the myenteric ganglia. Both classes of 5-HT-accumulating neurones had long aboral projections within the myenteric plexus (up to 100 mm long) and to the submucous plexus and probably function as descending interneurones.
