    Notes: Summarises the results of a survey of major property agents in Scotland, regarding the professionals' views of the methods adopted and the quality of information supplied by small and medium-sized organisations to procure space. This survey confirms the view that property is not clearly understood by the business community and that there is a tendency for such businesses to be defensive when questioned on their specific property needs. It further confirms that spatial quantification is neither well-considered nor understood and that the property agent has little confidence in the stated requirements. The agent also seems reluctant to introduce tools to the business to better understand and communicate these requirements. The agent considers that the property information supplied by business is of poor quality and that the person responsible for such procurement within business is, predominantly, not at a high level of seniority.

    Notes: Abstract Due to seasonal variation in bottom-water temperature and degradation of organic matter, the depths of the redox boundaries fluctuate in sediments of the river Meuse. This is reflected by a non-steady state behaviour of heavy metals in the surface sediments. Levels of acid-volatile sulphides suggest that dissolved concentrations of heavy metals in the anoxic pore waters are determined by their respective sulphide phases. However, complexation with dissolved organic ligands may significantly increase dissolved concentrations of heavy metals. In most sediments studied, a distinct peak in dissolved concentrations of heavy metals is measured immediately below the sediment-water interface. This concentration peak may be attributed to degradation of organic matter and oxidation of sulphides. Dissolved concentration gradients indicate that upward diffusion of heavy metals from the sediment can contribute to concentrations in the surface water, although significant effects may be confined to specific locations. In addition, it is shown that release of heavy metals as dissolved species to the surface water is negligible compared to particulate-bound fluxes of heavy metals to the sediment.

    Notes: Abstract Three new methoxo-bridged copper(II) complexes with 2-amino-4- methylpyridine as the ligand have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR and electronic spectra, and by their magnetic properties. The complexes exhibit strong antiferromagnetic interactions at room temperature. The u.v.-vis spectra exhibits three absorption bands, which can attributed to d–d, L–M and π–π* transitions. The i.r. spectra indicates Cu2O2 ring vibrations in the 580–530cm−1 range. The magnetic properties of the [Cu2(2-amino-4-methylpyridine)4(O- Me)2](ClO4)2 complex has been investigated in the 5–270K range and a singlet-triplet energy gap (−2J) of 67cm−1 was observed. All complexes in the solid state are e.p.r.-silent and show no triplet spectrum; in fact a weak signal due to a monomeric impurity are observed. Frozen solution e.p.r. spectra suggest that the complexes dissociate when dissolved in DMF or DMSO.

    Notes: Three new copper(II) linear trinuclear compounds are reported, all of which were synthesized in-situ, with the general formula [Cu3(L)4](CF3SO3)2(Y)x, where L is the dehydronated ligand: N,N′-bis(pyridine-2-yl)formamidine (abbreviated as Hpdf), N,N′-bis(pyrimidine-2-yl)formamidine (abbreviated as Hpmf) and N,N′-bis(5-methylpyridine-2-yl)formamidine (abbreviated as Hmpdf), Y = EtOH or H2O and x = 0.5-1.5. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, LF, and EPR spectroscopy and by magnetic susceptibility down to 4 K. The structure of the compound [Cu3(pmf)4](CF3SO3)2(H2O)1/2 was determined by X-ray crystallography; it was found to crystallise in the triclinic space group P-1 with a = 8.529(5), b = 15.760(5), c = 19.639(5) Å, α = 101.793(5), β = 101.263(5), γ = 102.389(5)°, Z = 2. The structure [Cu-Cu-Cu angle 174.96(11)°] consists of four nearly flat molecules of the ligand, which contribute to the propeller-type structure around the Cu-Cu-Cu axis. A strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the CuII ions is observed with calculated J values, based on the Hamiltonian H = -2J(S1·S2 + S2·S3) - 2J′·S1·S3, of -174(1) cm-1, -120(1) cm-1, and -167(1) cm-1 for the compounds studied with L = pdf, pmf, and mpdf, respectively. These values are in agreement with an S = 1/2 ground state below temperatures of 120-160 K.

    Notes: Summary In a classical paper of 1908, Debye has resolved the electromagnetic field scattered by a dielectric cylinder into a series of waves multiply internally reflected in the cylinder. For acoustic scattering by elastic cylinders, a corresponding series was derived from the conventional solution (obtained by satisfying the overall or global continuity conditions) by Brill and Überall, taking into account mode conversions of longitudinal (L) into transverse (T, shear) waves, or vice versa, upon internal scattering in a some-what involved fashion. In a series of papers, Gérard has shown that this approach could be greatly simplified by introducing local reflection and transmission coefficients at each interface, which is suitable for generalizing the Debye series to the case of elastic waves coupled by the continuity conditions at the external and each of any possible (multiple) internal interfaces of the scattering object. The approach is then applicable to all elastic objects for which surface and interfaces form coordinate surfaces of any separable geometry; the corresponding derivation is given here in the most general fashion, and is concretely illustrated by the examples of an elastic plate, infinite cylinder and sphere.

    Notes: Abstract. Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) was purified from Streptomyces griseus. The enzyme is a dodecamer with a molecular mass of approximately 450 kDa. The holoenzyme is a complex of ATCase and active dihydroorotase (DHOase) subunits. The ATCase and DHOase activities co-purify after gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. Denaturing gel electrophoresis separates the holoenzyme into a 38-kDa ATCase polypeptide and a 47-kDa DHOase polypeptide. The holoenzyme retained ATCase and DHOase activity after being heated to 65°C for 5 min, but after storage at 4°C for 24 hours lost ATCase activity. Previously, the Pseudomonas putida Class A ATCase was defined by Schurr et al. (J Bacteriol 177, 1751–1759) as requiring an inactive DHOase to be functional. Here, we show that an active DHOase is part of the dodecameric ATCase/DHOase complex in Streptomyces. To distinguish those Class A ATCases with active DHOases from those with degenerate DHOases, we suggest the subdivision, Class A1, for the former and Class A2 for the latter.
