Notes: Dewetting and nanopattern formation of 3–10 nm Pt thin films upon ion irradiation is studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Lateral feature size and the fraction of exposed surface area are extracted from SEM images and analyzed as functions of ion dose. The dewetting phenomenon has little temperature dependence for 3 nm Pt films irradiated by 800 keV Kr+ at temperatures ranging from 80 to 823 K. At 893 K, the films dewet without irradiation, and no pattern formation is observed even after irradiation. The thickness of the Pt films, in the range 3–10 nm, influences the pattern formation, with the lateral feature size increasing approximately linearly with film thickness. The effect of different ion species and energies on the dewetting process is also investigated using 800 keV Kr+ and Ar+ irradiation and 19.5 keV He+, Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+ irradiation. The lateral feature size and exposed surface fraction scale with energy deposition density (J/cm2) for all conditions except 19.5 keV Xe+ irradiation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Picosecond interferometry is used to study the acoustics waves created by heating Pt films with a subpicosecond laser pulse. Both the period of the initial oscillations in the metal film and the amplitude of the sound wave in the substrate are measured quantitatively. The platinum films are roughened by irradiation with energetic ions. The amplitude of the sound wave is doubled at those irradiation levels where the platinum coverage has been reduced by about one-half. A theory for the amplitude of the launched acoustic wave predicts that the acoustic amplitude is proportional to the mean square film thickness. Thus changes in the morphology of a partially perforated metal film can be observed using a simple, nondestructive optical technique. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background: Female offenders incarcerated in Washington State have demonstrated higher rates of mental health needs than boys. Linehan's (1993a, b) Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an effective treatment for adult women with Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT utilises a combination of skills training, problem solving, and validation to enable patients to reduce self-destructive, impulsive and aggressive behaviours. The prevalence of similar emotional problems among female juvenile offenders suggests that DBT may be an effective strategy for this population. The State of Washington Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee sponsored a collaborative project conducted by a research team from the University of Washington and the staff at the Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration's Echo Glen Children's Center to evaluate the effectiveness of a DBT intervention.Method: Pre-post intervention records were compared for female offenders from a mental health and a general population unit where DBT was implemented. Youth on a third unit served as a comparison group. Youth behaviour problems, staff punitive responses were compared before and after the intervention period. Results: Youth behaviour problems and use of punitive responses by staff decreased compared to the year prior on one cottage (unit) while no behaviour or staff changes were noted on another. Conclusions: The evaluation demonstrated the efficacy of providing DBT to female offenders in a residential setting and yielded mixed results on behaviour change during the study period that may relate to quality of training and prior youth behaviour problems.

Notes: Synaptic vesicles in the nerve terminal play a pivotal role in neurotransmission. Neurotransmitter accumulation into synaptic vesicles is catalyzed by distinct vesicular transporters, harnessing an electrochemical proton gradient generated by V-type proton-pump ATPase. However, little is known about regulation of the transmitter pool size, particularly in regard to amino acid neurotransmitters. We previously provided evidence for the existence of a potent endogenous inhibitory protein factor (IPF), which causes reduction of glutamate and GABA accumulation into isolated, purified synaptic vesicles. In this study we demonstrate that IPF is concentrated most in the synaptosomal cytosol fraction and that, when introduced into the synaptosome, it leads to a decrease in calcium-dependent exocytotic (but not calcium-independent) release of glutamate in a concentration-dependent manner. In contrast, α-fodrin (non-erythroid spectrin), which is structurally related to IPF and thought to serve as the precursor for IPF, is devoid of such inhibitory activity. Intrasynaptosomal IPF also caused reduction in exocytotic release of GABA and the monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin. Whether IPF affects vesicular storage of multiple neurotransmitters in vivo would depend upon the localization of IPF. These results raise the possibility that IPF may modulate synaptic transmission by acting as a quantal size regulator of one or more neurotransmitters.

Notes: The rocks of western Ny-Friesland, northern Svalbard, are part of a tectonostratigraphy including four thrust sheets, each composed mainly of orthogneisses overlain by younger metasedimentary rocks. Previous geochronological studies have shown that the orthogneisses are dominated by ca. 1750 Mya granitoids. This study of a quartz-monzonite in one of the thrust sheets, the Nordbreen Nappe, yields a single-zircon U-Pb ion-microprobe age of 2709 Ø 28 My. This is the oldest rock unit so far reported in the Svalbard Caledonides. However, age-determinations on detrital zircons in the metasediments of western Ny-Friesland have shown that Late Archean rocks were prominent sources. The new ages presented here provide the first evidence of a local source for these sedimentary rocks.

Notes: : A previous modeling study used the Generalized Watershed Loading Functions (GWLF) model to simulate stream-flow, and nutrient and sediment loads to Cannonsville Reservoir from the West Branch Delaware River (WBDR). We made several model revisions, calibrated key parameters, and tested the original GWLF model and a revised GWLF model using more recent data. Model revisions included: addition of unsaturated leakage between unsaturated and saturated subsurface reservoirs; revised timing of sediment export; inclusion of urban sediments and dissolved nutrients; tracking of particulate nutrients from point sources; and revised timing of septic system loads. The revision of sediment yield timing resulted in significant improvements in monthly sediment and particulate phosphorus predictions as compared to the original model. Addition of unsaturated leakage improved hydrologic predictions during low flow months. The other model changes improve realism without adding significant model complexity or data requirements. Goodness of fit of revised model predictions versus stream measurements, as measured by the Nash-Sutcliff coefficient of model efficiency, exceeded 0.8 for streamflow-0.7 for sediment yield and dissolved nitrogen (N) and 0.6 for particulate and dissolved phosphorus (P). The revised GWLF model, with limited calibration, provides reasonable estimates of monthly streamflow, and nutrient and sediment loads in the Cannonsville watershed.

Notes: : Point-nonpoint trading has been suggested as a relatively efficient approach for reducing nutrient pollution in the Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere. However, relatively little economic research has examined the design of trading programs involving nonpoint sources. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the economics of several fundamental design choices for point-nonpoint trading programs. The Susquehanna River Basin (SRB) in Pennsylvania as an example, although many of the insights should generally apply to other regions as well.
