    Notes: A three-camera close range photogrammetric system for robust and precise measurement of bedsores has been designed and constructed. MEDPHOS (MEDical PHOtogrammetric System) consists of three synchronised cameras with convergent optical axes. A light projector is fixed in the centre of the rig that holds the cameras. A special dot pattern is projected onto the surface to be measured, to compensate for the lack of natural texture on the wound surface. The proposed algorithm consists of the following steps: the cameras and projector are calibrated so that all interior and exterior parameters are known; tailored image segmentation procedures are developed and applied for the detection of the projected pattern dots from the uneven background of the images using morphologic operators; and watershed transformation is used to tackle the problem of overlapping pattern dots. To reduce the effects of non-uniform illumination and specular reflection of light due to humidity (often the case with wounds), a homomorphic transformation is developed and applied to the images. After segmentation of the images, a connected-component labelling procedure is used to establish the points for matching. The centroids of these components were precisely calculated. Intensity-based image matching has been tested without yielding satisfactory results due to the significant deviation from the Lambertian reflection assumption used for solving the correspondence problem. This problem is reliably solved by developing a new algorithm based on geometric constraints that allow feature-based matching and do not need approximate values of the location of the targets in the images. This robust three-focal constraint is found to be very effective for matching provided the necessary conditions for the system configuration are met. Auxiliary photometric constraints together with the calibrated projector (which is treated like an active camera) also serve as additional sources of information for reducing the number of remaining ambiguities and checking the consistency of the results. Almost all of the required biometric information can be obtained rapidly, robustly and easily using MEDPHOS. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

    Notes: Emaciation and poor survivorship of juvenile Hawaiian monk seals at French Frigate Shoals atoll prompted a study of their foraging, using video camera technology (crittercam). Nine juveniles between the ages of 1 and 3 yr (six males, three females) were fitted with crittercam to identify their foraging habitat and feeding behavior. All feeding was directed at small (≤ 10 cm), cryptic, benthic prey. Older seals (ages 2 and 3), varied in their foraging intensity with most of their attention directed at shallow atoll depths (10–30 m). In contrast, the three yearlings focused all their feeding in the sand fields (50–100 m) on the atoll's outer slope. Bottom trawls were used to assess the prey abundance of the sand habitat and found 70% of the numerical catch was flounder (Bothidae). Extrapolating the yearlings' prey capture rate (0.13/min, derived from the crittercam video) over their total bottom time yielded an estimated 1–1.3 kg/day of flounder. The mean size of flounder (5 ± 1.7 cm) caught in the bottom trawls was close to the size at which larval flounder settle from the plankton (3 cm), suggesting that localized changes in oceanography could directly impact the seals' prey supply. Extensive use of sand communities by young seals may be the strongest link yet identified between juvenile survivorship and oceanographic dynamics.

    Notes: Spaghetti was made from semolina, containing 5% to 30% milled flours of green pea, yellow pea, chickpea, and lentil, respectively. Physical-chemical characteristics and descriptive sensory and consumer acceptance characteristics were measured. Spaghetti containing legume flours darkened the spaghetti (P 〈 0.05) but did not affect the cooked weight significantly. Cooking loss and firmness increased with an increase in legume flour content. Trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA/g) was significantly reduced after cooking. Descriptive intensity analysis showed that the firmness, pulse flavor, and color intensity of the pasta products increased with the increase in the percentages of legume flour fortification up to 30%, whereas the intensity of the shiny appearance, elasticity, and overall quality decreased. Consumers preferred control spaghetti (without legume additives) more than the spaghetti containing legume flours and they slightly liked the spaghetti with 15% lentil or green pea and the spaghetti with 20% chickpea or yellow pea.

    Notes: Research was conducted to determine the stability of secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) and α-linolenic acid (ALA) in flaxseed-fortified macaroni. Macaroni was fortified with whole ground flaxseed (GWF) at levels of 10% to 20% and then dried under low temperature (LT, 40°C), high temperature (HT, 70°C), or ultrahigh temperature (UHT, 90°C). Macaroni was also fortified with 15% ground hull (GHF) or steam-treated whole ground flaxseed (GSWF) and dried under UHT. The dried macaroni was stored for 32 wk under ambient conditions. Approximately 80% to 95% of the SDG was recovered, indicating that SDG was stable during the 32-wk storage period. Total lipid and ALA levels in all flaxseed macaroni treatments remained unchanged throughout the 32-wk storage. This observation was consistent across the drying conditions and flaxseed addition levels. Conjugated diene (CD) values indicated that macaroni fortified with GWF did not oxidize significantly during the 32-wk storage for the macaroni dried under HT or UHT. However, a significant increase (P 〈0.05) in CD values for macaroni containing 10% and 20% flaxseed and dried using LT was observed at the 32-wk storage period. Headspace volatile concentrations did increase over the storage period for macaroni containing GWF, but the increase was not significant. Significant increases (P 〈 0.05) in oxidation were found by 24 wk in GHF- and GSWF-fortified macaroni. GWF macaroni dried at UHT, HT, or LT could be used as a way to improve our dietary consumption of ALA and SDG. However, use of steam as a method to inactivate unwanted enzyme activity is not recommended.

    Notes: We studied the effect of anodal capture at the ring electrode of the right ventricular (RV) lead on interventricular (V-V) timing during biventricular (BiV) pacing, in which left ventricular (LV) pacing was preceding RV pacing. The V-V interval was programmed from 80 to 4 ms (LV first) in the LV unipolar (LV tip—generator can) followed by the LV tip-RV ring pacing configuration. In the LV unipolar configuration, V-V programming leads to a continuous change in morphology of the QRS complex according to a change in collision of both activation fronts. When using the LV tip-RV ring configuration with anodal capture at the RV ring electrode no change in QRS morphology was recorded varying the V-V interval from 80 to 60 and 40 ms. However, at V-V intervals between 20 and 4 ms a change in morphology of the QRS complex was recorded, which was due to additional cathodal stimulation of the RV tip electrode during RV stimulation.

    Notes: Objective: The aim of this report is to examine whether scaling and root planing (SRP) in one area of the mouth may affect periodontal improvement in untreated areas in the same patient, possibly through systemic effects of treatment.Material and Methods: Twenty patients diagnosed with generalized aggressive periodontitis were randomized into treatment (n=11) and no treatment (n=9) groups. Within the treatment group, three quadrants were treated by SRP at week 0, 3, 12, and 24, while a single experimental quadrant remained untreated throughout the study. The outcome for all teeth was assessed using clinical parameters, subtraction radiography, and pathogenic bacteria levels in the subgingival flora over the 24-week study period.Results: Compared with sites in no treatment patients, the treated sites in the treated patients showed a 1 mm decrease in probing depth (PD) (p〈0.01) and a 0.5 mm increase in bone height (p〈0.01) by 24 weeks. In untreated sites within treated subjects, however, PDs tended to improve (p=0.09) but at a reduced rate compared with treated sites. The levels of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythensis (Bacteroides forsythus) remained unchanged in untreated sites while levels of Prevetolla intermedia and Treponema denticola tended to decrease as compared with controls but did not reach significance.Conclusions: This study indicates that untreated sites in treated periodontitis patients show a trend towards clinical improvement and exhibit reductions in some but not all periodontopathic bacterial species tested.
