    Notes: Inoculation of nonhost pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants with the tomato wilt pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (FOL), caused no symptoms and the fungus was not recovered from any part of the plant. FOL, however, partially protected pepper plants from subsequent infection with Phytophthora capsici, Verticillium dahliae or Botrytis cinerea by significantly reducing the percentage of diseased plants and the appearance and intensity of symptoms. FOL did not inhibit the mycelial growth of these pathogens in vitro. The protection induced by FOL against Botrytis was inhibited by 1-methylcyclopropene (MCP), an inhibitor of ethylene perception, suggesting the involvement of this hormone in the signalling of FOL-induced resistance. The activities of β-1,3-glucanase and peroxidase 48 h after FOL induction were similar to those in control plants. Chitinase activity, however, was higher in the stems of plants inoculated with FOL. A study of the levels of phenolic compounds revealed that cell-wall-bound phenolics were more abundant in plants treated with FOL, especially in stems, while soluble phenolic contents did not differ.

    Notes: Summary.  Although there is a worldwide interest in the assessment of health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) in haemophilia patients, no non-disease specific instruments (for adults) are readily available. In this paper, a haemophilia-specific quality-of-life assessment measure for adults (the Hemofilia-QoL questionnaire) has been developed and tested for psychometric properties in 121 adults with haemophilia living in Spain. The Hemofilia-QoL questionnaire is a self-report modular instrument that assesses nine relevant HRQoL domains for patients with haemophilia (e.g. physical health, daily activities, joint damage, pain, treatment satisfaction, treatment difficulties, emotional functioning, mental health, relationships and social activity). Psychometric examination involved the assessment of data quality, scaling assumptions, reliability (internal consistency and test–retest) and validity (concurrent; external clinical criterion and sensitivity). The Hemofilia-QoL 36-item version questionnaire had acceptable internal consistency and retest reliability values. The questionnaire shows excellent concurrent validity (with the SF-36 Health Survey) and external clinical criterion validity (haemophilia clinical status) and sensitivity (health status changes) as well. The Hemofilia-QoL is now available for adult assessment and is ready for use in clinical research in Spain.

Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oak, Maryland, and was presented to the American Mathematical Society in October 1956. develops, with an eye on the numerical applications, an analogue of the classical Euler-Cauchy polygon method (which is used in the solution of the ordinary differential equation dy/dx=f(x, y), y(x 0)=y 0) for the solution of the following characteristic boundary value problem for a hyperbolic partial differential equation u xy =f(x, y, u, u x , y y ), u(x, y 0)=σ(x), u(x 0, y)=τ(y), where σ(x 0)=τ(y 0). The method presented here, which may be roughly described as a process of bilinear interpolation, has the advantage over previously proposed methods that only the tabulated values of the given functions σ(x) and τ(y) are required for its numerical application. Particular attention is devoted to the proof that a certain sequence of approximating functions, constructed in a specified way, actually converges to a solution of the boundary value problem under consideration. Known existence theorems are thus proved by a process which can actually be employed in numerical computation.
