    Notes: The phase constitution during the sintering of pure red mud and red mud–fly ash mixtures was studied in the temperature range of 900°–1250°C. The phases formed at different sintering temperatures were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction. The phases that are likely to form at equilibrium at any isotherm were predicted using the Gibbs free energy minimization technique and the databases provided in the FactSage software. Although the thermodynamic prediction is in reasonable agreement with the experimental results for the major phases, there is some disagreement regarding the minor phases, especially the more complex phases. The major limitation of the thermodynamic approach presently is the non-availability of thermodynamic data for several complex and multi-component solution phases.

    Notes: Security assessment of a power system is very important function to detect any violation in the system and to ensure secure operation of the system in deregulated environment. Contingency ranking is the process of indexing the possible contingencies of system on the basis of their severity. The contingencies of higher ranking are further analyzed for detailed analysis. The contingencies based on the real power flow and the voltage deviations should be dealt simultaneously for better ranking. The paper presents fuzzy approach to combine ranking based on MW and Mvar losses and a new rank list is prepared. The proposed approach is tested on IEEE-30 bus test system.

    Notes: A two-stage, micro trickle-bed reactor (for studies of the effects of hydrogen sulfide on hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of Athabasca bitumen-derived heavy gas oil over commercial NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst) has been simulated. One dimensional homogeneous mass transfer and a two dimensional heat transfer models were developed. The essence of the simulation was to enhance the understanding of the effects of hydrogen sulfide in the hydrotreating catalyst bed in a two-stage mode and also to predict the catalyst requirements for deep HDS and HDN processes. The kinetic model used in the simulation was based on the Langmuir-Hingshelwood method of rate determination. Adsorption constants were estimated by non-linear least squares method. The kinetic models were tested on independent set of data and found to predict the experimental data satisfactorily. The mass transfer simulation considered the effects of variables such as temperature and catalyst loading or liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) on the trends of hydrogen sulfide generation and, sulfur and nitrogen conversions along the catalyst bed. The model was numerically solved using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. The 1:3 wt/wt catalyst loading with inter-stage hydrogen sulfide removal was found to give the best HDN and HDS activities. Simulated results showed that doubling the present catalyst mass and operating at 653 °C with inter-stage hydrogen sulfide removal would give 6 and 179 ppm product sulfur and nitrogen, respectively. On the other hand, without hydrogen sulfide removal, only 49 and 302 ppm product sulfur and nitrogen could be attained, respectively. The heat transfer simulation compared temperature profiles in the two-stage process to a single stage process for the 1:3 wt/wt catalyst loading at 653 K. The temperature regime in Stage II was found to be more uniform unlike Stage I and the single stage. Crank Nicholson algorithm was used to solve the 2-D partial differential equations.

    Notes: A comparative study has been made on the hydrodynamics and gas-liquid mass transfer performances of upflow and downflow bubble columns. Gas-liquid distributions in the column are made by an ejector system using liquid as motive fluid and gas is used as secondary fluid for both the cases. The two-phase hydrodynamic studies have been done with water and aqueous solutions of carboxy methyl cellulose at different concentrations and air as gas phase. The volumetric mass transfer coefficients have been measured by absorbing air-carbon dioxide mixture in aqueous solutions of sodium carbonate and bicarbonate. For downflow system, experiments are carried out at natural suction of air through the ejector; whereas for upflow system, air is forced through the secondary entrance of the ejector from a high pressure tank at any desired rate. The effect of gas and liquid flowrates on gas holdup, frictional pressure drop and mass transfer coefficients have been investigated. All the experiments have been performed in the homogeneous flow regime for a stable operation.

    Notes: We revisit the analysis of a reactor network consisting of two coupled continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) arranged in series (Chem. Eng. J. 59 (1995) 169). The main idea proposed in this earlier work is to improve process conversion by generating periodic behaviour in the first reactor (by appropriate choice of design and operational parameters) which then 'forces' the second reactor. The performance of this cascade system was shown to be greatly enhanced using the above strategy. In this paper we show some conceptual errors in the analysis in the original paper. We also show that by employing a systematic bifurcation analysis, including the use of a path following software, greater insights can be gained regarding the system's behaviour. Using these techniques we show that operation and design parameters can be readily identified to ensure that the cascade has a superior performance to a single CSTR.

    Notes: Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of solvent-dehydrated cadaveric dermis in pubovaginal sling surgery for the first time in the literature. Methods Twenty-five women with stress urinary incontinence underwent pubovaginal sling surgery using 2 × 12 cm allograft dermis. Preoperatively, all patients were evaluated by a detailed urogynecologic evaluation, voiding diary, pelvic examination and urodynamic investigation. Outcome was assessed by the Urogenital Distress Inventory short form and standardized follow-up questionnaires. Results Twenty (80%) patients were cured of stress incontinence symptoms. Seventeen wore no pad and three reported occasional stress urinary incontinence and used no or one pad at a mean follow up of 12 months. Five (20%) patients in our series experienced the same amount of leakage as before the surgery. Seventy-six percent of the patients indicated that urinary incontinence was no longer negatively affecting their daily life and were satisfied with the procedure. Conclusions Questionnaire-based assessment of outcome suggests that solvent-dehydrated cadaveric dermis is effective in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. However, larger and comparative prospective studies with long-term results and randomized comparison of tissue preparation techniques are warranted.

    Notes: The capacity to evaluate causal relations is fundamental to human cognition, and yet little is known of its neurocognitive underpinnings. A functional magnetic resonance imaging study was performed to investigate an hypothesized dissociation between the use of semantic knowledge to evaluate specifically causal relations in contrast to general associative relations. Identical pairs of words were judged for causal or associative relations in different blocks of trials. Causal judgments, beyond associative judgments, generated distinct activation in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right precuneus. These findings indicate that the evaluation of causal relations in semantic memory involves additional neural mechanisms relative to those required to evaluate associative relations.

    Notes: This study investigates the link between effective tax rates (ETR) and earnings management in a non-Western context. It examines the use of accounting choice by Malaysian firms in response to an anticipated change in tax policy. We predict and find that large Malaysian firms with low effective tax rates decrease book income prior to a reduction in corporate tax in order to influence tax policy. Our empirical results are consistent with prior evidence in the US, that firms use accounting choice to realize economic objectives. The Malaysian evidence suggests that the result of a positive association between ETR and earnings management can be generalized outside the US context.

    Notes: The dynamic shear modulus (elastic and viscous modulus) development of dough during baking was studied. Flooded parallel plate geometry was used to monitor the rheological changes of commercially available canned doughs (bread dough, bun dough and biscuit dough). The normal force exerted on the upper plate by the expanding dough was measured to study the cell-opening event. The dough-baking process was simulated in a rheometer oven. The morphology of baked dough was studied using a scanning electron microscope to elucidate the effect of ingredients and process parameters on the properties of the final baked product. Three stages of modulus development were observed during the baking process: bubble growth and packing, rapid expansion/starch gelatinization and final curing. The cell opening coincided with the sudden rise in modulus caused by starch gelatinization. The rate at which starch gelatinization takes place controls the temperature of the cell opening. The type and concentration of various ingredients have a greater effect on the modulus and on the cell opening than the heating rates. Frequency dependence was observed during baking, but the effect on modulus development diminished at higher frequencies.
