Notes: Our efforts were directed to the preparation of bismuth titanate – Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) bymechanically assisted synthesis. The mechanical activation was applied to prepare bismuth titanate,Bi4Ti3O12, from bismuth oxide, Bi2O3, and titanium oxide, TiO2 (in an anatase crystal form).Mechanochemical synthesis was performed in a planetary ball mill in air atmosphere. Bismuthtitanate ceramics was obtained by sintering at 1000 oC. The formation of Bi4Ti3O12 in the sinteredsamples was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy, SEM, wasused to study the particle size and powder morphology. The obtained results indicate that Bi4Ti3O12from the powder synthesized by high-energy ball milling exhibits good sinterability, showingadvantage of the mechanochemical process over conventional solid-state reaction

Notes: Bismuth titanate is a typical layer-structured ferroelectric material and belongs to theAurivilius type-structure compounds family. A bismuth titanate ceramic material could be obtainedby mechanically activated synthesis after thermal treatment at a temperature slightly lower than inconventional solid-state reaction. In this case bismuth titanate was prepared throughmechanochemical synthesis starting from bismuth oxide and titanium oxide in rutile form. Themixture of oxides was milled in a zirconium oxide jar in a planetary ball-mill in intervals from 1 to12 hours. The ratio of powders to zirconium oxide balls during milling was 1:20. Bismuth titanatewas formed after 1 h. The Raman spectroscopy analysis was performed
