    Notes: : This investigation was done to determine an energetically feasible method to reduce bean oligosaccharides (stachyose and raffinose) for large-scale bean flour production. Michigan black, red, and navy beans (all Phaseolus vulgaris) were treated by α-galactosidase, germination, or hydration to determine treatment effects on stachyose and raffinose levels. Oligosaccharides were extracted with 70% (w/w) ethanol, and α-galactosidase was added to catalyze hydrolysis of the oligosaccharides. Enzyme treatment was for 1 h at ambient temperature (23°C). For germination, whole beans were incubated in a germinating chamber (100% humidity, 26.7°C) for 48 h. In hydration, whole beans were soaked in excess water at ambient temperature (23°C) for 5 h. Enzyme treatment resulted in 51%± 3.0%, 30%± 1.9%, and 46%± 1.9% reduction in total raffinose and stachyose for black beans, red beans, and navy beans, respectively. Germination treatment resulted in 61%± 12%, 61%± 1.9%, and 70%± 2.8% reduction in total raffinose and stachyose for black beans, red beans, and navy beans, respectively. Hydrated black beans showed a loss of 33%± 9.6%, whereas hydrated red and navy beans showed no reduction of oligosaccharides. Although germination showed the greatest reduction in bean oligosaccharides, this method may not be as cost-effective commercially as the enzyme treatment because of the time required for germination.

    Notes: This paper describes the mechanical characteristics of microscale single crystal silicon (SCS) and UV-LIGA nickel (Ni) films used for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). A compact tensile tester, operated in an atomic force microscope (AFM), was developed for accurate evaluation of Young's modulus, tensile strain and tensile strength of microscale SCS and UV-LIGA Ni specimens. SCS specimens with nominal dimensions of 20 μm in thickness, 50 μm in width and 600 μm in length were prepared by a conventional photolithography and etching process. UV-LIGA Ni specimens, with a thickness of 15 μm, a width of 50 μm and a length of 600 μm in nominal dimensions, were also fabricated by electroplating using a UV thick photoresist mould. All specimens have line patterns on their specimen gauge section to measure axial elongation under tensile loading. The SCS specimens showed a linear stress–strain response and fractured in a brittle manner, whereas the UV-LIGA Ni specimens showed elastic–inelastic deformation behaviour. Young's modulus of SCS and UV-LIGA Ni specimens obtained from tensile tests averaged 169.2 GPa and 183.6 GPa, respectively, close to those of bulk materials. However, the tensile strength of both materials showed a larger value than the bulk materials: 1.47 GPa for the SCS and 0.98 GPa for the Ni specimens. Yield stress and breaking elongation of UV-LIGA Ni specimens were also quite different from those of the bulk Ni because of the specimen size effect on inelastic properties.

    Notes: summary  The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of salicylic–lactic (SL) acid conditioner on the shear bond strength of brackets. Fluoride releasing (Light-bond) and non-fluoride releasing (Enlight) composite adhesives were used after conditioning with 0·22% salicylic + 9% lactic acid or 34% phosphoric acid. Composite adhesives were light cured with either a halogen light curing (HLC) unit for 30–50 s or a plasma arc curing (PAC) unit for 4 s. The shear bond strength was measured with an Instron. Failure modes of debonded brackets were identified based on adhesive remnants on the bracket and tooth. Salicylic–lactic acid conditioning was found to provide adequate shear bond strength. Groups conditioned with SL acid were debonded mainly at the enamel–resin interface and comparatively clean enamel surface after debonding was observed than those conditioned with phosphoric acid. Using confocal laser scanning microscopic examinations, it was found that demineralization patterns between SL acid and phosphoric acid conditioned groups were not different when the same adhesive was used. The SL acid conditioner did not reduce the demineralization. Light-bond adhesive showed less demineralization than Enlight adhesive. The PAC unit can be recommended as an alterative to the HLC unit because it significantly reduces the irradiation time.

    Notes: summary  The objective of this study was to evaluate the difference in the colour and colour change of dental resin composites over commonly used two backgrounds. Colour of five uncured and cured resin composites before and after polishing with 600-, 1000- or 1500-grit SiC paper was measured according to the CIELAB colour scale relative to the illuminant D65 over a white background (WB; reflectance = 91·57%) and a light trap (LT; reflectance = 0·01%) on a reflection spectrophotometer with the SCE geometry. Colour difference (ΔE*ab) by the background, and by the specimen conditions over each of two backgrounds was calculated. ΔE*ab values between the same specimen by the background were 2·38–11·60. ΔE*ab values by the specimen condition were varied by the background, and ΔE*ab between cured/polished specimens over WB were significantly higher than those over LT (P 〈 0·05) except a few cases. Background influenced three-colour coordinates of CIE L*, a*, and b* values differently depending on the material and the specimen condition. Background significantly influenced the colour coordinates and colour difference by the specimen conditions. As the light trap can eliminate the influence of variations at the background, measured colour over the light trap can be the colour of material itself. Correlation between the measured colour and varied shades of background should be further studied.

    Notes: We have investigated the static and metadynamic behaviour of the interstitial free steels and in particular the effects of the steeling elements (phosphorous and boron) on kinetics of recrystallisation. The results showed that the strain for the initiation of strain independent softening (often referred to as metadynamic recrystallisation) varies with the Zener-Hollomon parameter and steel composition. Strain rate had a strong influence on kinetics of metadynamic recrystallisation. Anincrease in temperature from 930oC to 1100oC led to a decrease in time for 50% softening (about one order of magnitude) in the SRX region. However, for the same temperature range, the time for 50% MDRX did not change significantly

    Notes: The corrosion behaviors, including the immersion corrosion, electro-chemical corrosion,stress-corrosion fracture, of heat-treated SAE 8620 steels have been investigated. Experimentalresults show that the 400°C?? tempered specimen is only susceptible to local attack of pittingcorrosion and can exhibit an excellent corrosion resistance during the static immersion andelectro-chemical tests in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The tensile strength and elongation of thenormalized and 300~500°C tempered specimens will be reduced when tested in NaCl solutions,especially at a higher testing temperature. The normalized specimen can inhibit effectively thecrack-growth under constant loading and the 300~500°C tempered specimens have a sequence ofcrack-growth rate as 300°C 〉 400°C 〉 500°C
