    Notes: Phase-stepping photoelasticity has been used to study the fragmentation of an E-glassfibre in epoxy resin and examine quantitatively the effect of a transverse matrix crack on the stresstransfer at an interphase. Unsized glass fibre was coated by plasma polymerisation with acrosslinked conformal film of 90% acrylic acid and 10% 1,7-octadiene. The micro-mechanicalresponse at the fibre-matrix interphase and in the adjacent matrix has been described in detail usingcontour maps of fringe order. From these, the interfacial shear stress profiles at fibre-break havebeen calculated

    Notes: A new method of state recognition of milling tool wear was presented based on timeseries analysis and fuzzy cluster analysis. After calculating, verifying liberation signal of tool state,and analyzing cutoff property, trailing property, periodicity of the sample autocorrelation functionand partial autocorrelation function as well as estimating parameter of model. It can be decided thatdynamic data serial is suit AR(p) (autoregression) model. Taking p equal to 12 as a feature vectorextraction, based on the fuzzy cluster analysis the similarity relation between the feature vector ofthe tool working state and the sample feature vector was obtained. Working state of tool wear wasdetermined according to the similarity relation of feature vector. This method was used to recognizeinitial wear state, normal wear state and acute wear state of milling tool. The result indicates thatthis method of tool wear recognition based on time series analysis and fuzzy cluster is effective

    Notes: Purpose - The purpose of this research is to develop new techniques for component physical modeling for the dynamic simulation of integrated power systems. Design/methodology/approach - A FE-based phase variable model is proposed so as to achieve fast and accurate simulation. Such a model is established based on the nonlinear transient FE analysis, in order to take into consideration the harmonic effects due to the nonlinear magnetization property, magnetic circuit geometry as well as other design variations. Findings - In the FE-based phase variable model, the inductances are described as functions of the phase angle and the magnitude of winding currents, the rotor position and other operational parameters. They are obtained from the transient FE solutions, stored in tables, and retrieved during the simulation. The FE-based phase variable model is implemented in Simulink in two ways. The first is the equation-based block and the second is the circuit component-based block. The FE-based phase variable models of various electrical components in the power system were studied. This includes various types of rotating machines and transformers. Examination and application examples show the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed operational modeling procedures. Originality/value - The developed FE-based physical phase variable model is as accurate as the full FE model with much faster simulation speed. It will benefit the dynamic simulation of integrated power system. This combination of physical modeling and integrated dynamic simulation is original and represents an added value to the state-of-the-art in this field.

    Notes: A novel DRB1*15 allele, DRB1*1516, has been identified in a Guangdong Han individual. Its sequence was confirmed by sequencing of polymerase chain reaction products and clones. This allele differed by one nucleotide from DRB1*150101 at position 220 (G→A), resulting in an amino acid substitution from Gly to Arg at codon 45.

    Notes: Background Atopic diseases, resulting from hypersensitivity to a wide variety of allergens, affect 10–20% of the population. Immunotherapy is an effective treatment for atopic diseases, but its mechanisms are not fully understood.Objective We studied gene expression profiles in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and examined whether the individuals with allergic rhinitis (AR) have a unique gene expression profile and how the immunotherapy affect the gene expression profiles.Methods We used cDNA microarray and ‘expression analysis systemic explorer’ to examine the gene expression profiles in the PBMC of atopic subjects and other groups.Results We identified a highly conserved gene expression profile in atopic subjects that permitted their accurate segregation from control or autoimmune subjects. A major feature of this profile was the under-expression of a variety of genes that encode proteins required for apoptosis and over-expression of genes that encode proteins critical for stress responses and signal transduction. We also identified 563 genes that can segregate individuals with AR based upon receipt of immunotherapy.Conclusion There is a highly conserved gene expression profile in the PBMC of individuals with AR. This profile can be used to identify individuals with AR and to evaluate responses to immunotherapy. Quantitative endpoints, such as gene expression, may assist clinicians faced with clinical decisions in the diagnosis of patients and the evaluation of response to therapy. The knowledge of the possible genetic basis for immunotherapy efficacy may also lead to novel therapeutic approaches for atopic diseases.

    Notes: A novel cytoplasmic male sterility-fertility restoration system has been developed in rapeseed (Brassica napus). The cytoplasmic male sterile line 681A was derived from a spontaneous male sterile mutant in a newly released double-low rapeseed cultivar ‘Xiangyou 13′. The restorer line 714R was identified in the interspecific progeny from a B. napus×B. juncea-cross. Genetic analysis showed that fertility restoration for 681A cytoplasmic male sterility was controlled by a single dominant nuclear gene which might originate from B. juncea. The RAPD marker S1039-520 was found to be linked to the restorer gene in F2 progeny of 681A × 714R with a recombination frequency of 5.45%.

    Notes: Islet-1 has been reported to be involved in pituitary development in the early stages of mouse embryogenesis. Oestrogen receptor (ER) and its expression may be involved in regulating pituitary development and its hormone-secreting function. Islet-1 expression and its correlations to ER in the developing pituitary gland are unknown. We therefore determined the pituitary cell specific expression of Islet-1 and its colocalisation with ER alpha (ERα) in sheep foetus by immunohistochemistry. The results demonstrated that Islet-1-immunoreacitive (ir) cells were distributed throughout the pituitary gland from day 60 of gestation until birth. The Islet-1-ir cell number was significant higher at day 90 and 120 of gestation compared to that at day 60 and at birth. All of the ERα-ir cells were colocalised with Islet-1 at day 60 of gestation, although a few ERα-ir cells were negative for Islet-1 in the later stage of gestation. The dominant cell type expressing Islet-1 is the gonadotroph, although small proportions of thyrotrophs and lactotrophs also express Islet-1. The proportion of luteinising hormone-ir gonadotrophs possessing Islet-1 kept rising from day 60 to day 120 of gestation and persisted until birth. The proportion of thyroid-stimulating hormone-ir cells expressing Islet-1 was at a high level from day 60–120 of the gestation and significantly declined at birth. The percentage of prolactin (PRL)-ir cells expressing Islet-1 was about 20% at day 60 of gestation. Very few PRL-ir cells contained Islet-1 in later stages of gestation. These data suggest that the development and functional establishment of pituitary gonadotrophs, thyrotrophs and lactotrophs might be regulated by the expressions of Islet-1 and ERα and by their interactions, although any mechanisms need to be elucidated further.
