    Notes: The photolightening behavior of red hair was investigated. Red hair was found to lighten to a similar extent by irradiation from both ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) light. Under the same irradiating conditions, blond hair was lightened by VIS light but did not lighten by UV light until it was washed after irradiation. These different photolightening behaviors of red and blond hair are supposed to be due to differences in their melanin compositions. The dominant type of melanin in red hair is pheomelanin; while blond hair investigated in the previous work contained both eumelanin and pheomelanin, with mainly eumelanin. Consequently, in this investigation, the photolightening behaviors of red and blond hair were compared to clarify the differences in photosensitivity between the two types of melanin. It has been proven that chemically intact melanin in red hair is considerably more photolabile to UV light than VIS light. Also, it is much more easily decomposed by UV light than melanin granules in blond hair, although they are both similarly decomposed by VIS light. This indicates that pheomelanin is far more sensitive to UV light than eumelanin, while these two types of melanin are similarly sensitive to VIS light. This leads to the following hypothetical photolightening mechanism of red hair: When UV light is irradiated on red hair, the light is absorbed by hair protein and attenuated before it reaches the melanin granules. However, since pheomelanin is highly sensitive to UV light, even the attenuated UV light decomposes the pheomelanin to some extent. As a result, UV light lightens red hair without the need for subsequent washing, in contrast to blond hair, which consists of mainly eumelanin.

    Notes: 1 To clarify the effects of doxapram on the baroreflex, we recorded carotid sinus nerve (CSN) activity in isolated and perfused carotid artery bifurcations of rabbits. 2 The CSN activity due to chemoreceptor stimulation was blocked by resection of the nerve branches from the carotid body. After the resection, the CSN activity was correlated to increase of carotid sinus (CS) pressure. 3 Administration of doxapram reduced the CSN activity originating from baroreceptors. The effect of doxapram on baroreceptors was dose dependent and reversible. 4 It is unlikely that doxapram altered CS wall mechanics because CS pressure did not change in the presence of the drug. 5 We conclude that doxapram acts on the cardiovascular system in part by inhibiting the negative feedback loop that originates in CS baroreceptors.

    Notes: Background:  Although many histopathologic factors in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue predict the prognosis, the major predictive factors have not been identified clearly. This study analyzed the prognostic value of the histologic grade at the deep invasive front of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.Methods:  The clinicopathologic features of 124 consecutive patients seen between January 1985 and December 1999 with previously untreated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue were reviewed. Their mean age was 58.5 years (range: 23–90) and the male–female ratio was 1.8: 1 (79 men and 45 women). There were 41, 40, 30, and 13 cases at stage I to stage IV, respectively. The clinicopathologic factors, especially the histologic grade at the deep invasive front (invasive front grade, IFG), were analyzed to determine factors predicting prognosis.Results:  The 5-year disease-free survival rate of the patients treated with curative aim only was 66.7%. Clinicopathologic factors significantly associated with the prognosis were T classification, tumor size, stage classification, tumor depth, macroscopic appearance, cervical lymph node metastasis (nodal metastasis), microvascular invasion, and IFG. In a multivariate analysis, patients with tumor depth ≥4 mm, IFG ≥8 points, and nodal metastasis had a reduced disease-free survival and IFG ≥11 points had a predictive value for nodal metastasis (odds ratio: 7.34; P = 0.0019).Conclusion:  This study found that a high IFG malignancy score had a high prognostic value for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

    Notes: The deformation and fracture behavior at 1773-2023K of the unidirectionally solidifiedeutectic Al2O3/YAG (Yttrium-Aluminum Garnet with the composition of Y3Al5O13) ceramic composite was investigated. The stress-stain curve and strength of unnotched and notched specimens, measured by bending and tensile tests, showed that (a) both unnotched and notched specimens fractured in a brittle manner at low temperatures and at high displacement speeds, but in a ductile manner at high temperatures and at low displacement speeds, and (b) the notched strength increased, reaching maximum, and decreased with increasing temperature and decreasing displacement speed. The increase in the notched strength with increasing temperature and decreasing displacement speed up to the maximum value was accounted for by the increase in plastic zone size ahead of the notch,and the decrease with further increasing temperature and decreasing displacement speed by the loss of the stress carrying capacity of the yielded ligament, based on the finite element analysis
