Notes: Nd-Fe-B type powder was sintered using spark plasma sintering method. Fabricatedcompact sintered at the temperature of 700 ºC, is found to be a composite magnet with Nd-Fe-Co-Band α-Fe. The compact sintered at 700 ºC shows slightly low coercivity and large remanentmagnetization comparing to the compact sintered at 600 ºC due to the formation of α-Fe phase, resulting in the large maximum energy product. Maximum energy product tends to decrease withdecreasing thickness of sintered compacts below 0.5 mm in thickness

Notes: summary  This study evaluated the effects of surface pre-treatments on the bonding of auto-polymerizing silicone soft denture liner to a Co–Cr alloy denture base after cyclic thermal stressing. The bonding surfaces of Co–Cr alloy cylinders (8 mm diameter and 4 mm high) were polished with a 600-grit silicon carbide paper. The bonding surfaces received one of three pre-treatments, which included either the application of a metal primer, a metal primer after air abrasion, or a resin primer after adhesive resin coating. Tensile specimens were fabricated by polymerizing a 2-mm thickness of soft denture liner between a pair of pre-treated denture base cylinders. Failure loads were measured by tensile testing after subjecting the specimen to 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 thousand thermal cycles. Seven specimens were fabricated for 15 groups, including three pre-treatments and five thermal cycle groups. Failure loads of resin-bonded specimens, which were formerly reported, were used as references. All data were statistically analysed by two-way anova and Bonferroni test at the 95% confidence level. Adhesive resin coating of the metal surface was effective in enhancing the failure loads up to 5000 thermal cycles. However, failure loads of all metal-bonded groups were significantly lower than those of resin-bonded groups at all thermal cycling intervals. The results of this in vitro study implied that polymerizing adhesive resin on the Co–Cr alloy might be a promising method, when the clinicians need to acquire improved bonding of an auto-polymerizing soft denture liner to Co–Cr alloy denture bases.

Notes: Background  Although there have been several reports on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) in Japanese schoolchildren based on questionnaires, there has been no nation-wide study of the frequency of this condition diagnosed by dermatologists in regular health check-ups of schoolchildren. Objectives  The objective of this work was to evaluate precisely the prevalence of AD in elementary schoolchildren in Japan based on regular health check-ups by dermatologists. Methods  In 2001/2, elementary schoolchildren: first graders (age 6–7 years) and sixth graders (age 11–12 years) were examined by dermatologists in eight prefectures of Japan (Hokkaido, Iwate, Tokyo, Gifu, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kochi and Fukuoka). In each prefecture, public elementary schools were randomly selected from urban and rural districts. We planned to examine about 700 schoolchildren in each of urban first, urban sixth, rural first and rural sixth grades from the eight areas, a total of 22 400 children (700 × 4 × 8). AD was diagnosed by the dermatologists based on the Japanese Dermatological Association criteria for the disease. Results  The point prevalence of AD was 11·2% overall (2664 of 23 719) ranging from 7·4% (Iwate) to 15·0% (Fukuoka) in the eight areas. Seventy-four per cent, 24%, 1·6% and 0·3% of those afflicted were in the mild, moderate, severe and very severe groups, respectively. Overall, the prevalence of first graders was slightly higher than that of sixth graders (11·8% vs. 10·5%, P 〈 0·01). There was no apparent difference in prevalence between urban and rural districts, or between boys and girls. Conclusions  The prevalence of AD in Japanese elementary schoolchildren was about 10%, three-quarters of those being mildly affected. This is the first nation-wide study made of Japanese elementary schoolchildren examined by dermatologists to evaluate the frequency of AD.

Notes: Background:  Although many histopathologic factors in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue predict the prognosis, the major predictive factors have not been identified clearly. This study analyzed the prognostic value of the histologic grade at the deep invasive front of tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Methods:  The clinicopathologic features of 124 consecutive patients seen between January 1985 and December 1999 with previously untreated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue were reviewed. Their mean age was 58.5 years (range: 23–90) and the male–female ratio was 1.8: 1 (79 men and 45 women). There were 41, 40, 30, and 13 cases at stage I to stage IV, respectively. The clinicopathologic factors, especially the histologic grade at the deep invasive front (invasive front grade, IFG), were analyzed to determine factors predicting prognosis. Results:  The 5-year disease-free survival rate of the patients treated with curative aim only was 66.7%. Clinicopathologic factors significantly associated with the prognosis were T classification, tumor size, stage classification, tumor depth, macroscopic appearance, cervical lymph node metastasis (nodal metastasis), microvascular invasion, and IFG. In a multivariate analysis, patients with tumor depth ≥4 mm, IFG ≥8 points, and nodal metastasis had a reduced disease-free survival and IFG ≥11 points had a predictive value for nodal metastasis (odds ratio: 7.34; P = 0.0019).Conclusion:  This study found that a high IFG malignancy score had a high prognostic value for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

Notes: Background:  To investigate the behavior of nuclear proteins in apoptosis induced by anticancer drugs in cultured human salivary gland (HSG) cells. Methods:  Dynamic alternations of nucleolin and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) proteins in anticancer drug-induced apoptosis of HSG cells and in a cell-free apoptotic system were examined using Western blot analysis and immunocytochemical method. Results:  The 110-kDa form of nucleolin and AgNOR protein decreased and the 80- and 95-kDa forms appeared during apoptosis in HSG cells and in a cell-free apoptotic system. In addition, the induction of DNA ladder formation coincided with the appearance of alternation of nucleolin and AgNOR proteins in a cell-free apoptosis. Nucleolin diffusely spread out into the nuclear material in the apoptotic body of HSG cells. Conclusions:  The present results indicate that alternations of nucleolin and AgNOR proteins are associated with the induction of DNA fragmentation and the final active phase of apoptosis induced by anticancer drugs in malignant salivary gland cells.
