Notes: Statistical analysis of microarray gene expression data has recently attracted a great deal of attention. One problem of interest is to relate genes to survival outcomes of patients with the purpose of building regression models for the prediction of future patients' survival based on their gene expression data. For this, several authors have discussed the use of the proportional hazards or Cox model after reducing the dimension of the gene expression data. This paper presents a new approach to conduct the Cox survival analysis of microarray gene expression data with the focus on models' predictive ability. The method modifies the correlation principal component regression (Sun, 1995) to handle the censoring problem of survival data. The results based on simulated data and a set of publicly available data on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma show that the proposed method works well in terms of models' robustness and predictive ability in comparison with some existing partial least squares approaches. Also, the new approach is simpler and easy to implement.

Notes: Al2O3/Ni composite ceramics toughened by metallic particles was fabricated by thevacuum reduction of Al2O3 and nickel nitrate (Ni(NO3)2•6H2O) mixed powders at 800-1000° for 2-4h and hot pressed at 1400° ~ 1500°C for 1-2h. Three-point bending strength and facture toughness of the composite were studied. With the increase of Ni content, its flexural strength and facture toughness increases significantly. Microstuctural investigations of the composite revealed that finenickel particles dispersed homogeneously at the matrix grain boundaries, forming the intergranular nanocomposite

Notes: Iron oxide and its hydrate nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrothermal method andconfirmed by infrared and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) et al. The dimensions of thenanoparticles are about 50-120 nm. The crystalline form of iron oxide nanoparticles is likeglobosity while its hydrate rod. Amino acids intermingling with the synthesized nanoparticles werecrystallized to investigate the space effect of the nanoparticles. The crystalline forms of crystal aredifferent to that of pure amino acid. The positions and width of the nanoparticles’ peaks in theinfrared spectrum are changed too. Microscope observation and infrared spectrum results indicatedthe nanoparticles had changed the internal structure of amino acids crystal. To considerate thetoxicity of the synthesized nanoparticles, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol 2-yl)-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was used to determine their cytotoxicity. The OD value(Optical Density) was used to calculated RGR% (Relative Generation Rate) of cells, whichdetermined the grade of cytotoxicity. The RGR of nanoparticles of iron oxide and its hydrate areabout 1 to 2, which indicate they have just low toxicity

Notes: Nanosized yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia powders were prepared by chemicalco-precipitation. By adding certain amount of wax emulsion, we obtained green compacts with therelative density ranged from 47% to 60%. Then the green compacts were sintered in air at the temperaturefrom 1350°C to 1550°C. It turned out that the 3Y-TZP compacts were nearly fully densified aftersintering at 1350°C and the grain sizes were between 200 to 300 nm. This result suggested that theaddition of wax emulsion could improve the wettability between powders, elevated the density of thegreen compacts so that the coordination number and the contact points between particles were increased. With more transfer passages, the sintering behavior is remarkably improved

Notes: Al2O3 particle dispersed 3Y-TZP nanoceramics doped with TiO2 was fabricated by the vacuumreduction of Ti(OH)4, Al(NO3)3 and 3Y-TZ powders at 873K for 2h and sintered in air at 1573K~1823Kfor 2-6h. The relation between Al2O3 and TiO2 content, sintering parameters, relative density and grainsizes were studied. Microstructural investigations revealed that, in comparison with direct powder mixing, the reduction method is more efficient in achieving a homogeneous dispersed fine alumina second phase, which results in the reduction of matrix grain size and the increase of the relative density of the 3Y-TZPceramic. TiO2 addition facilitates the sintering process but may cause significant abnormal grain growthwhich can be offset by the homogeneity of the powder dispersion. A final 3Y-TZP-TiO2 ceramic matrixwith grain size below 500nm dispersed with ultrafine second phase Al2O3 was obtained

Notes: Large area well-aligned ZnO nanowire arrays have successfully been synthesized on an unconventional substrate: stainless-steel mesh at a low growth temperature of 400oC. The as-grown ZnO nanowires have uniform diameters about 20 nm and a strong UV peak was observed in photoluminescence spectra. The growth method provides a novel way to produce high quality ZnO nanowire arrays, and can be also used to direct the controllable growth of other nanomaterials
