Notes: We show that small in-plane magnetization components in magnetic garnet films with perpendicular anisotropy can be imaged using nonlinear magneto-optical proximal probe microscopy, i.e., magnetization-induced second harmonic generation together with a scanning near-field optical microscope. A relationship exists between the in-plane magnetization domains we observed and the typical maze-like out-of-plane magnetization domains that are simultaneously imaged recording the linear Faraday effect. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: summary  The literature has documented a controversial discussion on the possible relationship of otogenous symptoms and craniomandibular dysfunction since the 1920s. Therefore, an investigation was conducted which consisted of two parts: a case study with population-based controls and a cross-sectional study. The aim of the first study was to screen a group of patients suffering from acute or chronic tinnitus for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in comparison with a population-based group of volunteers without tinnitus. To this end, 30 patients (13 females and 17 males, age 18–71 years) suffering from acute hearing loss associated with tinnitus, isolated acute tinnitus, and chronically transient tinnitus were examined for symptoms of craniomandibular dysfunction. The results were compared with those of clinical functional analysis from 1907 subjects selected representatively and according to age distribution from the epidemiological ‘Study of Health in Pomerania’ (SHIP); the occurrence of tinnitus was ruled out in these control subjects. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi-square and Mann–Whitney U-tests. Sixty per cent of the tinnitus patients and 36·5% of the control subjects exhibited more than two symptoms of TMD (P = 0·004). Tinnitus patients had significantly more muscle palpation pain (P 〈 0·001), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) palpation pain (P 〈 0·001), and pain upon mouth opening (P 〈 0·001) than the general population group. No statistical differences were found in TMJ sounds, limitation of mandibular movement, or hypermobility of the TMJ. Furthermore, 4228 subjects of the population group examined in the epidemiological study were screened for co-factors of tinnitus with the help of a multivariate logistic regression model which was adjusted for gender, age, and a variety of anamnestic and examined data. Increased odds ratios (OR) were found for tenderness of the masticatory muscles (OR = 1·6 for one to three painful muscles and OR = 2·53 for four or more painful muscles), TMJ tenderness to dorsal cranial compression (OR = 2·99), listlessness (OR = 2·0) and frequent headache (OR = 1·84) A relationship between tinnitus and TMD was established in both examinations. Tinnitus patients seem to suffer especially from myofascial and TMJ pain. A screening for TMD should be included in the diagnostic survey for tinnitus patients.

Notes: Reelin is an extracellular matrix protein secreted by a variety of cell types throughout the developing brain. The target cells for reelin express the cytoplasmic adapter protein Dab1, which binds to the reelin receptors VLDLR and ApoER2. In the present work, we have studied the localization of both receptors in developing mouse and human cortex, olfactory bulb and cerebellum. In mouse, some Cajal–Retzius cells express reelin and VLDLR; in humans, all the components of the signalling pathway (Reelin, Dab1, VLDLR and ApoER2) are present in subsets of Cajal–Retzius cells. In the mouse cortical plate, VLDLR and ApoER2 are present from E15 to postnatal stages; in human cortical plate they are most prominent at ≈ 20 gestational weeks. In mice, cerebellar Purkinje cells only express VLDLR whereas in humans they express both VLDLR and ApoER2. Mitral cells of the mouse olfactory bulb are ApoER2-positive and VLDLR-negative. In sum, the receptor expression patterns are similar in the human and mouse cortical plate but differ in Cajal–Retzius and Purkinje cells, which in humans express additional components of the reelin–Dab1 pathway.

Notes: This paper reports the outcome evaluation of a gun safety video intervention. Guided largely by the extended parallel process model, the video, Bullet ‘Proof’ - The Case for Gun Safety' focuses primarily on (a) knowledge of 6 gun safety practices, (b) susceptibility to accidental gunshot injuries and death, severity of gunshot injuries, (d) response efficacy, and (e) self-efficacy. The video was shown to 175 individuals in 7 hunter safety classes and evaluated in a field experiment using a posttest-only control-group design with random assignment. Compared to the control group, the experimental group listed significantly more gun safety practices, perceived greater susceptibility to accidental gun injuries, perceived gun injuries to be more severe, and perceived greater response efficacy toward some of the recommended gun safety practices. Further, all of the recommended gun safety practices received high self-efficacy and behavioral intention ratings. Finally, the video itself scored high on all measured positive attributes, and low on all measured negative attributes.

Notes: Summary.  Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) causes respiratory and genital diseases in cattle, whereas the closely related BHV-5 can induce severe meningoencephalitis in calves. To characterize BHV-5 glycoprotein C (gC5) within the backbone of BHV-1, three consecutive recombinant viruses were constructed: A deletion mutant (rBHV-1ΔgC blue) with gC1 replaced by the lacZ gene, an exchange mutant (rBHV-1gC5) with the lacZ of BHV-1ΔgC blue exchanged by gC5, and a rescue mutant (rescue BHV-1) from rBHV-1gC5 with an additional XbaI site in gC1. The recombinant and wildtype viruses were characterized on MDBK cells. Although no significant differences were observed in growth behaviour and entry kinetics, rBHV-1gC5 showed a distinct phenotype in a heparin blocking assay. The gC5 was able to transfer the heparin binding phenotype of BHV-5 to BHV-1. This indicates that gC1 and gC5 differ in their receptor binding qualities, which might modulate the ability of the viruses to spread within the central nervous system.

Notes: Abstract Background: Traumatic diaphragmatic hernias are serious complications of blunt abdominal or thoracic trauma. In the early posttraumatic period, they are often missed, and they may be followed by a variety of subacute or chronic symptoms due to pulmonary or intestinal obstruction. Methods: We present three cases of traumatic diaphragmatic hernias. Two of them were successfully treated by laparoscopy and direct suturing during the early posttraumatic period; the other was treated 10 years after the trauma. Results: We found that laparoscopy is a safe, successful, and gentle procedure not only for diagnosis but for treatment as well. The postoperative course was uneventful in all cases. All patients remained asymptomatic during long-term follow-up (42–60 months). These results are promising. We expect the same good long-term results after laparoscopic repair as after open conventional surgery. Conclusion: We recommend that surgeons with sufficient experience in laparoscopy use a minimally invasive approach to treat chronic as well as acute traumatic diaphragmatic hernias in hemodynamically stable patients.

Notes: Abstract Background: We designed a study to determine the rate of intra- and postoperative complications as well as the rate of recurrences in elective operated femoral hernias treated via the laparoscopic technique. Methods: Between 1993 and 1998, we performed 1,097 operations in our department using the laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) technique. Femoral hernias amounted to only 4.6% (51 cases) of these patients. The male/female ratio was 1:2. The data concerning the operations and pre- and postoperative treatment were recorded prospectively. The patients were followed up at 2 weeks and 1 year after the operation. Results: We encountered one intraoperative bladder lesion, one subcutaneous port site infection, two postoperative hematomas that required reoperation, and two nerve irritation syndromes, which disappeared spontaneously after 6 months. Two patients developed an ileus; one required laparoscopic reintervention, and the other was treated with conventional open reoperation and intestinal resection. There were no recurrences. Conclusions: The application of the laparoscopic approach to the treatment of femoral hernias using the TAPP technique in nonemergency situations is highly effective. To date, we have seen no recurrences. Although the rate of major complications is low, current surgical techniques need to be perfected to avoid the type of complication recognized in this study.

Notes: Abstract Background: With an incidence rate of 2%, injury to the nerves of the lumbar plexus is the most common complication of laparoscopic hernioplasty, particularly when the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) technique is used. Methods: The course of the genitofemoral nerve, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, and ilioinguinal nerve within the operation site was investigated in 53 adult dissecting-room bodies. Their relationship to the deep inguinal ring, iliopubic tract, and anterior superior iliac spine was also examined. Results: Both the femoral and genital branches of the genitofemoral nerve may penetrate the abdominal wall lateral to the deep ring and cranial to the iliopubic tract. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve and the ilioinguinal nerve may run immediately lateral to the anterior superior iliac spine. Conclusion: Contrary to the previously accepted opinion, dissection and the placement of staples either cranial to the iliopubic tract or lateral to the anterior superior iliac spine can result in injury to the nerves.

Notes: Abstract The deactivation kinetics of spillover hydrogen in the gas phase was investigated by systematic variation of the distance between catalyst and reaction compartment. It turned out to be a first-order reaction. Glass surfaces strongly accelerate the deactivation.

Notes: Abstract Earlier investigations revealed that glass surfaces may get catalytic properties by hydrogen spillover. Occasional activations by oxyhydrogen reaction, observed there, were executed systematically now and revealed high and stable degrees of activity of glass activated in this way. The activation energies for the hydrogenation of cyclohexene on the glass 'catalyst' are 18.1 kJ mol-1 (T 〉 367 K) 33.6 kJ mol-1 (T 〉 367 K)
