Notes: In this paper we discuss collaboration in the area of technology management. We propose the concept of collaboration profile to describe various forms of networks along key differentiating characteristics. The collaboration profile is then applied using two examples to illustrate different forms of collaboration in the biotechnology industries, the ‘virtual company’ and the ‘industrial platform’. Based on interviews with members of a virtual company as well as members of industrial platforms and drawing conclusions from theoretical insights, the advantages and disadvantages of these forms and their suitability for different stages of the technology life cycle will be discussed.Specifically, we address the following questions:What kind of collaboration profile applies to virtual companies and industrial platforms? How does the suitability of collaboration forms vary with the stage of technology development?Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of the collaboration profile for analysing features and potential problems of collaborations by describing two examples. Focusing on the key characteristics of a collaboration helps to check the appropriateness of the collaboration form and to identify and manage respective problems.

Notes: Intellectual capital (IC) offers a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage and is believed to be the font from which technological development and economic growth may spring. This study proposes a three-dimensional framework for describing and measuring a firm's IC that includes human capital, intellectual property, and reputational capital. Drawing upon the resource-based view of the firm, it is argued that in high-technology new ventures (HTNVs) IC assets offer a unique source of advantage that facilitates entrepreneurship by reducing the risk and increasing the returns from investments in innovation and venturing. This paper reports the results of an empirical study of 237 HTNVs in the US that issued an initial public offering between 1994 and 1998. It is found that these firms' top management team human capital diversity and organizational reputation are of greatest significance for their entrepreneurial performance. Interestingly, these factors far outweigh the insignificant effect observed for intellectual property on subsequent innovation and venturing activities. The implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Notes: The purpose of this article is to introduce virtual reality technology as a potential tool for personnel selection in organizations. We describe virtual reality technology, its hardware and software requirements, and some current applications. Then we propose specific types of job knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAOs) particularly suitable to being assessed using virtual reality technology. We emphasize KSAOs that hold the greatest promise in terms of yielding greater validity than more commonly used selection techniques. We hope the present article will stimulate and guide future empirical research on the potential of virtual reality technology as a personnel selection tool.

Notes: The motive analysis included in Nelson's (2004) textual critique of the writings regarding communibiology is examined and found erroneous. It is suggested that the claim that traditional genre theories are contradicted by this analysis is not justified. The motives for communibiological texts alleged by Nelson are seen as preempted by the (conscious or nonconscious) motives of the critic.

Notes: Speer and Schneider's review (2003; this issue) illustrates a number of problems in psychologists’ understanding of elderly primary care (PC) patients and their providers, as well as the context of PC. Claims that elderly patients overutilize health services and do so primarily because of mental health problems are not well founded. Older PC patients also face practical and preference barriers to accepting conventional psychological treatment The evidence that psychological services provide cost offset is questionable, and cost offset is not the best way of evaluating the value of psychological services. Rather than as frontline providers, psychologists’ best prospects for an expanded role in PC is in the design, supervision, and evaluation of augmented services in this setting.

Notes: The electric field or current density distribution around a diamond particle embedded in a metal anode during electrolytic in-processing dressing (ELID) is calculated for the two-dimensional case of a long diamond particle without protrusion and for a periodic array of such long, parallel particles. It is found that there is a field concentration at the diamond/metal boundary so that the metal dissolution rate is the largest at such boundary. For the periodic array, the average current density is independent of the diamond concentration so that the metal dissolution rate increases with increasing diamond concentration. Hence, for the same ELID effect, the current required for a high diamond concentration tool is less than that required for a low diamond concentration tool. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The electric field distribution around a diamond particle embedded in a metal anode during a steady-state electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID) is calculated for a few more simple situations: A disk-shaped diamond particle with some protrusion, a spherical diamond particle with a hemispherical protrusion, and a long diamond particle with a half elliptical protrusion. It is found that the field concentration effect is greatly reduced with protrusion to a value of about 2 when half of the diamond particle is exposed. The effect is the largest at the diamond/metal boundary, decreases sharply to a small value at a distance of the order of the size of the diamond particle. Our analysis suggests that ELID is ideal for exposing diamond in metal-bonded tools. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
