Notizen: Diffusion coefficients for H, D, and T on a Ni(100) surface and in bulk Ni are calculated using variational transition state theory with semiclassical ground-state transmission coefficients using two potential energy surfaces obtained by the embedded atom method (EAM). The original EAM potential reproduces experimental bulk diffusion coefficients, but greatly overestimates the diffusion coefficients for H and D on Ni(100). By refining the empirical potential parameters, a new EAM potential is developed that accurately reproduces both the bulk and surface diffusion coefficients. The variational transition state theory calculations are used to analyze the unusually low (compared to gas phase) H/D kinetic isotope effects for diffusion in bulk and on the Ni(100) surface. For the temperature range for which experiments have been carried out, quantum mechanical tunneling contributes negligibly to the diffusion and, in these cases, the kinetic isotope effect is determined largely by the change in zero-point energy between the reactant equilibrium binding sites and the transition state. A near equality of the reactant and transition state zero-point energies leads to the unusually low kinetic isotope effects. Using the same refined EAM potential energy surface, the energetics of diffusion on the Ni(111) and Ni(110) surfaces are also presented. The barriers for diffusion on these two surfaces are sufficiently low, about 1.0 kcal/mol, that the approximation of uncorrelated hops needed to relate the computed hopping rate to the diffusion coefficient is suspect. Although diffusion coefficients were not computed, based upon an analysis of the zero-point energies at the reactants and saddle points, we predict that the H/D kinetic isotope effects for diffusion on these two surfaces will also be close to unity.

Notizen: Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys have demonstrated strains up to 5% resulting from the rearrangement of crystallographic variants by twin boundary motion under an applied field. A model is proposed that describes twin boundaries moving abruptly in order to accommodate either the mechanical energy of an applied stress σε0 or the magnetic interaction energy of the applied field MsH. This model provides predictions of the materials response under both field and load. The principal conclusion of the model is that when one energy, either mechanical or magnetic, becomes larger than the other, the twins will move to abruptly rearrange the entire sample to a variant stable under the new condition. Experiments were performed to verify this model in Ni–Mn–Ga shape memory alloy. The abrupt change of the variant structure was observed experimentally although the twin boundaries only swept through limited potions of the sample. Experimental field-induced strains reached 2.2%. Samples were also tested under cycled field with constant load and showed cyclic strains of 1.5%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A room temperature free shear strain of 5.7% is reported in a single crystal of Ni–Mn–Ga having a composition close to the Heusler alloy Ni2MnGa. A twin boundary was created in a 2 mm×2 mm×25 mm single crystal using a permanent magnet with surface field strength of about 320 000 A/m. A sharp 6.5° bend occurs in the sample at the twin boundary. The surface magnetization changes abruptly across this boundary. By moving the sample relative to the edge of the magnet, we were able to sweep the boundary back and forth along the crystal length. Surface magnetization was measured using a Hall probe and the results confirm that the easy axis is the tetragonal c axis. Powder x-ray diffraction shows that the fcc to body-centered-tetragonal bct martensitic transition of this material involved a 6% reduction of the bct cell c/a ratio, from (square root of 2) to about 1.33. The maximum achievable strain is thus estimated to be 6.2%. The twin planes in the system are the {112}bct and were observed to lie almost normal to the long axis of the sample tested. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys have recently emerged as a new class of active materials showing very large magnetic-field-induced extensional strains. Recently, a single crystal of a tetragonally distorted Heusler alloy in the NiMnGa system has shown a 5% shear strain at room temperature in a field of 4 kOe. The magnetic and crystallographic aspects of the twin-boundary motion responsible for this effect are described. Ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys strain by virtue of the motion of the boundaries separating adjacent twin variants. The twin-boundary motion is driven by the Zeeman energy difference between the adjacent twins due to their nearly orthogonal magnetic easy axes and large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The twin boundary constitutes a nearly 90° domain wall. Essentially, twin-boundary motion shorts out the more difficult magnetization rotation process. The field and stress dependence of the strain are reasonably well accounted for by minimization of a simple free energy expression including Zeeman energy, magnetic anisotropy energy, internal elastic energy, and external stress. Models indicate the limits to the magnitude of the field-induced strain and point to the material parameters that make the effect possible. The field-induced strain in ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys is contrasted with the more familiar phenomenon of magnetostriction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Field-induced strains of 6% are reported in ferromagnetic Ni–Mn–Ga martensites at room temperature. The strains are the result of twin boundary motion driven largely by the Zeeman energy difference across the twin boundary. The strain measured parallel to the applied magnetic field is negative in the sample/field geometry used here. The strain saturates in fields of order 400 kA/m and is blocked by a compressive stress of order 2 MPa applied orthogonal to the magnetic field. The strain versus field curves exhibit appreciable hysteresis associated with the motion of the twin boundaries. A simple model accounts quantitatively for the dependence of strain on magnetic field and external stress using as input parameters only measured quantities. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: To compare the efficacy and acceptability of conventional intravenous sedation with patient-controlled inhalational isodesox, 57 women undergoing outpatient oocyte recovery were randomly allocated to receive isodesox by face mask, while 55 women were given intravenous fentanyl and midazolam. Women's satisfaction with pain relief, peroperative pain, clouding of memory and the surgeons' assessment of operating conditions were evaluated. Thirty-eight women in the inhalation group (67%) and 41 (75%) women in the intravenous group were ‘very satisfied’ with their analgesia (p = 0.41). The mean (SD) pain score in women given isodesox was 46.8 (34.7), while in the intravenous group it was 34.1 (21.3) (p = 0.02). Oxygen saturation levels 〈 94% were recorded in one woman using isodesox and in 16 (29%) women given intravenous analgesia. Despite higher pain scores, in comparison with the conventional analgesia, patient-controlled isodesox offers a safer method of pain relief with comparable satisfaction rates.

Notizen: Abstract – Aims: To assess the epidemiology of dental injuries among schoolchildren in Newham, London. Material and methods: This study was carried out as part of the annual Community Dental Service’s School Dental Inspection (SDI) programme in Newham. All schoolchildren aged 14 years were invited to participate in the study. Dental examinations were carried out by one trained examiner (SM) and included presence of clinical evidence of dental injuries, treatment provided and needed in the upper and lower permanent incisors, size of incisal overjet and type of lip coverage. The postcode was recorded to assess the levels of social deprivation. Findings: 2242 out of 2684 children were examined. The prevalence of dental injuries was 23.7%. Treatment of dental injuries was neglected. Being male, having an incisal overjet greater than 5 mm and living in an overcrowded household increased the risk of having dental injuries. Conclusions: The prevalence of dental injuries in Newham (23.7%), which is a deprived area of London, was much higher than the overall prevalence in the UK (17%). Traumatic dental injuries seem to be a serious dental public health problem among children in deprived areas. Thus, there is an urgent need to collect local data on dental injuries in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the dental health.
