    Notes: This study was designed to investigate whether the blood of Pagothenia borchgrevinki, exhibits a Haldane effect, and whether activation of a Na+/H+ antiporter increases transport of intracellular protons and Bohr protons out of the erythrocytes resulting in inhibition of CO2 excretion in both P. borchgrevinki, and Dissostichus mawsoni. When carbon dioxide dissociation curves were determined from blood samples pooled from three fish under oxygenated and deoxygenated conditions a Haldane effect was observed. Using an in vitro, CO2 excretion assay, the rate of HCO3− dehydration was determined on blood and plasma equilibrated under an N2atmosphere then rapidly oxygenated with air in the presence of 10−5 M noradrenaline or acetazolamide (1004M). Whole blood and plasma from P. borchgrevinki, and D. mawsoni, were equilibrated with 0·5% CO2 in air and assayed in the presence of 10−5 M noradrenaline. Erythrocyte CO2 excretion rates were depressed significantly by noradrenaline in both species. The whole blood HCO3− dehydration rate was depressed significantly following rapid oxygenation in the presence of acetazolamide indicating that the pathway of CO2 excretion included activation of intracellular carbonic anhydrase and an adrenergic receptor.

    Notes: : Chemical anesthesia (AQUI-STM Plus) was used to harvest tank-rested yellow-eye mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri) and snapper (Pagrus auratus) in a “rested” state. Fillets were stored at half the acclimated temperature under hyperbaric, hyperoxic conditions and compared with fillets stored under normobaric, hyperoxic conditions. Postmortem (PM) changes in white muscle (WM) cut-surface pH and key metabolites (lactate, adenosine triphosphate [ATP], and inorganic phosphate [Pi]) were measured. Hyperbaric, hyperoxic storage extended the pre-rigor period in the rested WM by delaying PM changes. Prolongation of pre-rigor was greatest in rested snapper WM. This was attributed to an extended period of aerobic metabolism in PM rested WM.

    Notes: Abstract: Metacarpal morphometry represents a potentially cheap and widely available non-invasive assessment of skeletal status. In two cross-sectional studies, we compared the performance characteristics of a semi-automated technique (the Teijin Bonalyzer) with an in-house manual measurement, and with measures of skeletal strength at other sites. The metacarpal cortical index (mCI) was measured on hand radiographs of 178 osteoporotic women using both the Teijin Bonalyzer and a digitizing tablet. Measurements on the latter were consistently lower than with the Bonalyzer except for mCI (0.443 ± 0.080 vs 0.364 ± 0.060, p〈0.001), although correlation coefficients between these two methods were highly significant (r= 0.62–0.83, p〈0.001). The reproducibility errors of metacarpal bone mineral density (mBMD) were constant (1.1–1.2%) whilst those for mCI showed a marked operator-dependency (2.0–7.9%). In 379 elderly community-dwelling women, Bonalyzer mCI and mBMD showed a significant decline with age (r=−0.30 and −0.27 respectively, p〈0.05). Both mCI and mBMD correlated significantly with forearm BMD (r= 0.50 and 0.57 respectively, p〈0.001) and hip BMD (r= 0.48 and 0.53 respectively, p〈0.001). After adjustment for age and weight, hip BMD demonstrated the best discrimination for prevalent vertebral fractures as judged by the gradient of risk for a 1 SD decrease in measurement (odds ratio (OR) 2.17, 95% CI 1.56–3.01). Similar but smaller gradients of risk were shown by Bonalyzer mCI (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.00–1.75), mBMD (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.02–1.78) and forearm BMD (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.08–1.80). MCI, and in particular mBMD, may be useful assessments of bone mass and fracture risk. In our study, it is comparable to peripheral assessment of skeletal status by forearm densitometry.

    Notes: The infrared and Raman spectra of methylviologen (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridine dication, MV2+) have been measured from both the solid dichloride and aqueous solutions. The preresonance behaviour of MV2+ Raman bands showed that the absorption at ˜196 nm is mainly responsible for the resonance scattering process in MV2+. In the region below 1700 cm-1, nine polarized (p˜1/3) resonance Raman bands of the methylviologen radical cation, MV+, were assigned to in-plane ring modes. Arguments are given that the chromophore of MV+ may also partially include the methyl groups. The excitation profiles of the MV+fundamentals, measured with laser wavelengths covering the range 350.6-676.4 nm, reveal three main groups of modes, each behaving differently for the excitation in this range. Modes containing largely ν(C—C) ring contributions are mainly coupled with electronic transitions at ˜395, ˜605 and ˜720 nm and yield simple excitation profiles. Modes involving principally the vibrations of the N+—CH3 group show complicated interference peaks in the whole range of the excitation profiles. γ(CCC) is mainly coupled with the absorption at ˜620 nm. Resonance Raman bands of the (MV+)2 dimer have been characterized through studies of the concentration dependence of the spectra.
