Notizen: Hydrogen gas (H2) is an obligate byproduct of the N2-fixing enzyme, nitrogenase, claiming about 5–6% of the crops’ net photosynthesis but most, if not all of the H2 lost from nodules is oxidized by the soil surrounding the root system of the plant. When soils not recently used to support the growth of legumes were exposed to H2 gas at a rate and duration similar to that of soil adjacent to legume nodules, the fertility of the soil was enhanced in comparison with soil treated with air. Under growth-chamber and field conditions, H2-treated soils improved the growth performance of spring wheat, canola, barley and soybean (non-symbiotic) when compared with untreated soils or with soils pretreated with air. The dry weights of 4- to 7-week-old plants were 15–48% greater in the H2-treated soil, and in barley and spring wheat, tiller number of 7-week-old plants were 36 and 48% greater in the H2-treated soils. These findings may contribute to an explanation for the persistence of H2 evolving associations in agricultural legume symbioses selected for high yields (Uratsu et al., Crop Science 22, 600–602, 1982) and suggest that it may be possible to isolate, identify and culture the micro-organisms that are responsible for at least some of the benefits of legumes in crop rotation.

Notizen: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) are systemic autoimmune diseases that are characterized by the presence of autoantibodies reactive with U small nuclear RNP (snRNP) autoantigens. Both B and T cells are important in the pathogenesis of the disease, and T- and B-cell immunity against snRNP polypeptides have been shown to be linked in vivo. Currently, several alternative hypotheses for the pathogenesis of these diseases have been proposed. These include loss of tolerance, modified self-antigens, molecular mimicry and nondirected immune activation. To help distinguish between the various models of disease pathogenesis, we have characterized the T-cell receptor (TCR) CDR3 from a large panel of well-characterized human T-cell clones and lines specific for individual snRNP polypeptides. The results presented here reveal highly restricted TCR usage across patients by the snRNP-reactive T cells based on the deduced amino acid sequence of the CDR3 loop. These data support the hypothesis that T-cell responses against self antigens in SLE and MCTD are antigen driven and that there are a limited number of T-cell epitopes present on the snRNP autoantigens.

Notizen: Failure of ulcer healing may be critically important to the development of serious gastrointestinal complications in patients on long-term NSAIDs.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To determine the effect of indometacin, celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2-specific inhibitor, and nabumetone, a pro-drug, on ulcer healing rates in the rat.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Gastric ulcers were induced using a cryoprobe. An NSAID or a vehicle control was administered to groups of eight rats for 3 or 6 days (2 mg/kg indometacin, 9 mg/kg celecoxib or 40 mg/kg nabumetone). The ulcer area was measured and epithelial proliferation at the ulcer margins was measured histochemically. The effect of the drugs on intestinal prostaglandin levels was also assessed.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The mean ulcer sizes in the four groups on day 3 were comparable. On day 6, control animals and those receiving nabumetone showed significant ulcer healing (P 〈 0.02), while the mean ulcer sizes in the indometacin (P 〈 0.01) and celecoxib (P 〈 0.02) groups were significantly larger than those in the control group. Higher doses of nabumetone (160 mg/kg), however, impaired healing. Intestinal prostaglandins were reduced (P 〈 0.01) only in indometacin-treated animals. The epithelial proliferation index was significantly lower among indometacin- (P=0.02) and celecoxib-treated (P=0.03) animals compared to controls at day 3.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Celecoxib and indometacin both decreased the epithelial proliferative response and delayed healing of cryoprobe-induced gastric ulcers. In contrast, nabumetone impaired ulcer healing only at very high doses.

Notizen: Abstract The mode of action of the photosynthetic inhibitor produced byPandorina morum was examined by exposingVolvox globator and isolated spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified inhibitor preparation. Oxygen evolution ofVolvox, whole chloroplasts, and broken chloroplasts (-Calvin cycle) was reduced indicating that the substances inhibit the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation thatPandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low, molecular weight (probably below 100 mw).
