    Notes: The observation of a substitution-induced ferromagnetic order (Tc=200 K) is reported in antiferromagnetic La0.9Sr0.1MnO3 (TN=130 K) when 0.05 of La is replaced by yttrium. Important results of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and high-pressure transport studies are as follows. (i) Data on FMR linewidth and resistivity provide evidence for the presence of microscopic magnetic inhomogeneities, possibly La0.9Sr0.1MnO3. (ii) For zero external pressure, a resistivity peak at 130 K due to intergrain tunneling, a secondary peak close to Tc, and magnetoresistance (MR) on the order of 30% are observed. (iii) At high pressures, the resistivity peaks shift to higher temperatures at the rate of 24–26 K/GPa and MR values decrease. (iv) An internal pressure of 3 GPa due to Y substitution is inferred from high-pressure transport studies. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A Pockels cell Q-switch has been operated in a manner analogous to a saturable absorber by initially keeping the cell partly open for the first 1000 or so double passes and then opening it completely at a pre-set resonator power. This then allows simple and reliable selection of a single longitudinal mode. A detailed discussion is given of the design considerations which lead to the correct choice of mode-selecting device. With three different devices, a TEM00 mode Nd:CaWO4 laser has produced 400 kW pulses in a single longitudinal mode with a shot-to-shot frequency stability of ∼ 0.01 cm−1.

    Notes: Abstract An electro-optic Q-switch has been opened in two steps to allow slow pulse build-up giving, in conjunction with a resonant reflector, a high degree of mode selection in a way analogous to the use of saturable absorbers. Using this technique, a flash pumped Nd∶CaWO4 laser has produced reliable operation in a single longitudinal and transverse mode with an output power of 250 kW.
