Notes: Abstract Aqueous two-phase systems demix slowly due to similar physical properties. This is one of the major drawbacks for their adaptation for industrial scale extraction of enzymes. In the present work, a method to accelerate the demixing rates of these systems, employing a traveling acoustic wave field is reported for the first time. Phase-demixing for three systems, viz. polyethylene glycol (PEG)/sodium sulfate, PEG/potassium phosphate and PEG/maltodextrin were studied. The acoustically assisted process decreased the demixing time significantly (about 2- to 3-fold in PEG/salt systems and about 2-fold in the PEG/maltodextrin system), compared to that in gravity alone. Ultrasonication apparently enhanced the coalescence of the dispersed phase droplets due to the mild circulation currents it caused in the dispersion. This in turn enhanced the rate of demixing due to the increased migration velocity of the larger droplets.

Notes: Does religious and denominational background affect earnings and human capital investment? This paper examines religious background and human capital formation for a sample of males from the year 2000 wave of the National Longitudinal Survey Youth 1979 Cohort. This survey provides information that makes it possible to control better for many components of family background in order to isolate the impact of religion and denomination. The paper contains results from analyses of men within broad religious categories as well as within various Protestant denominations, and reports results for different racial and ethnic groups. The method used for the analysis is the estimation of human capital earnings functions. The paper finds evidence that both men raised as Catholics and men raised as Jews have higher earnings, holding other characteristics constant.

Notes: : A test of the suitability of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) compared to a sprinkler, was conducted on a Kansas producer's field where the soil is loam. The treatments included drip tape spacing of 60, 40, and 30 inches placed at depths of 18 and 12 inches. A nearby plot irrigated by a center pivot sprinkler was seeded to alfalfa and used for comparison. Seedling emergence and yield were adversely affected at 60 inch spacing, while the depth of placement of drip tapes (18 and 12 inches) showed no effect on yield. The site served for education and allowed comparison between SDI tape spacing and center pivot system.

Notes: [Auszug] Recently in our work on the post-mortem changes in muscle tissue, particularly as they affect the properties of meat as a foodstuff, we have re-examined the sarco-lemma-basement membrane system of pig rectus femoris muscle, using such surface replica techniques. In tissue taken immediately after ...

Notes: This case illustrates the rare association between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and Dowling–Degos disease (DDD). Furthermore the association of HS, DDD and multiple epidermal cysts has not to our knowledge been described before, but their coexistence in the same patient is likely to reflect the same follicular anomaly. It is possible that a single underlying defect of follicular proliferation may account for the coexistence of these conditions.

Notes: Summary Lichenification is characterized clinically by thickening of areas of skin as a result of the itch–scratch cycle and therefore is seen in conditions associated with chronic pruritus. The characteristic feature of giant lichenification is the occurrence of tumour-like growths with a warty cribriform surface. We describe a renal transplant patient presenting with giant lichenification of the scalp following an attack of herpes zoster at the same site. Chronic pruritus following scalp dysaethesia secondary to herpes zoster was considered the most likely explanation for the occurrence of these lesions.

Notes: A 69-year-old woman presented with pneumonia and subacute bacterial endocarditis. Nine days after intravenous vancomycin and ciprofloxacin were commenced, the patient developed a bullous mucocutaneous eruption. Clinical presentation and histopathology were consistent with drug-induced linear IgA bullous disease (LABD). The patient’s lesions resolved with cessation of antibiotics. A review of the features of drug-induced LABD and the drugs that have been implicated are presented.

Notes: A female infant was delivered at term with complications of severe meconium aspiration and birth asphyxia. Surface cooling was performed in the first 24 hours as part of the management of her birth asphyxia. Woody erythema was noted at 24 hours, followed by the formation of red–purple nodules on the 6th day. Clinical findings in the first 24 hours were suggestive of cold panniculitis. However, clinical and histological findings progressed to be in keeping with the diagnosis of subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN). Furthermore, the immediate postnatal period was complicated by pain resistant to treatment with opiates. Asymptomatic hypercalcaemia was noted on periodic testing at 7 weeks and treated by rehydration, diuretics, prednisolone, etidronate and a low-calcium and -vitamin D diet. A review of the clinical and histological findings of the relevant panniculitides occurring in the postnatal period is presented, as well as a review of the treatment of hypercalcaemia in SCFN.

Notes: Abstract Characterization and reactivity studies were performed on model catalysts comprised of metal clusters supported on metal oxide thin films. The thin films are prepared by vaporizing the parent metal onto a refractory metal substrate in an O2 environment. The oxide films are sufficiently conductive via defects and tunneling to the substrate that the use of charged particle spectroscopies does not lead to any adverse charging effects. Numerous characterization techniques demonstrated that both spectroscopically and chemically these thin films are comparable to the analogous bulk metal oxides. Model supported catalysts were subsequently prepared by vapor‐depositing catalytically‐interesting metals onto these thin film oxide supports. This deposition method realizes tight control over cluster size and, therefore, represents an ideal approach to studying size‐dependent chemical and physical properties. Reactivity studies established the validity of the supported systems as models of conventional catalysts. Furthermore, the use of these model catalysts provides a bridge between fundamental studies of single crystal reactivities and applied studies of high‐surface‐area catalyst activities.
