Notes: A laser shadowgraphy system for high-speed imaging of a convergent cylindrical shockwave generated by an electromagnetically driven solid density liner implosion in Lucite is described. The laser shadowgraphy system utilizes an advanced high-energy, long-pulse, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser for target illumination and a fast framing camera for multiple frame imaging of the shockwave as it radially converges and transits the Lucite. The time window resolution is 10 ns as determined by the fastest exposure time capable with the camera. Two on-axis symmetric implosions and two off-axis asymmetric implosion experiments were fielded at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Shiva Star 4.2 MJ capacitor bank z-pinch facility. For each experimental shot, the shadowgraphy system captured several frames of shadowgraph images as the shockwave moved through the Lucite. Analysis of the shockwave shadowgraph image shapes is done by fitting each shadowgraph image to a generic elliptical fit function and plotting the resultant two-dimensional image fits for comparison. For the on-axis symmetric implosion shots, a radial trajectory plot is extracted and a radial shock velocity is calculated. The Lucite shock speed is seen to increase monotonically from an initial velocity of 7.9 mm/μs to a near final velocity of 13.4 mm/μs as convergence effects dominate the shock speed calculated at small radii. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We use terahertz (THz) transmission spectroscopy to obtain the frequency dependent complex dielectric constants of water, methanol, and propylene carbonate, and solutions of lithium salts in these solvents. The behavior of the pure solvents is modeled with either two (water) or three (methanol and propylene carbonate) Debye relaxations. We discuss the effects of ionic solvation on the relaxation behavior of the solvents in terms of modifications to the values of the Debye parameters of the pure solvents. In this way we obtain estimates for numbers of irrotationally bound solvent molecules, the numbers of bonds broken or formed, and the effects of ions on the higher-frequency relaxations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate ultrafast dynamical imaging of surfaces using a junction-mixing scanning tunneling microscope. We detect picosecond transient voltage pulses on a microstrip transmission line and demonstrate a temporal resolution (full width at half maximum) of 8 ps. We show that the time resolution achieved in these experiments is limited mostly by the microstrip geometry and can be significantly improved by reducing the value of the transmission line impedance. By dynamically imaging the microstrip line and detecting picosecond voltage pulses propagating on a patterned metal-on-metal (Ti/Pt) structure, we demonstrate that 1 nm spatial resolution is achievable for a 13 ps (full width at half maximum) transient correlated signal. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Periodic variation in optical second-harmonic generation during homoepitaxial growth of silicon on singular Si(001) surface is reported. The period of the oscillations corresponds to bilayer growth, and the oscillations are correlated with the mechanism associated with a two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth mode. This mechanism is tentatively attributed to periodic domain coverage variations analogous to the oscillatory response in linear optical technique of reflectance anisotropy. The current experiment, however, cannot distinguish this mechanism from another based on anisotropic second-harmonic generation response with respect to steps. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority requires all sperm donors to be screened for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C and their semen quarantined for six months. No guidelines exist for screening prior to in vitro fertilisation or intracytoplasmic sperm injection. We prospectively analysed the prevalence of these viruses in our patients. Screening detected one case of HIV (0.13%), four of hepatitis C (0.5%) and 14 new cases of hepatitis B (1.7%). The prevalence of hepatitis B and HIV in our antenatal population at this time was 1.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Knowledge allows measures to be taken to reduce the risk of transmission to partner, fetus, new born baby, or by cross-contamination during embryo cryostorage and enables couples to make an informed decision regarding proceeding with treatment. Detection of infection in one partner should no longer preclude fertility treatment.

Notes: A methodology is described for harnessing the predictive capacity of a groundwater model to underpin aquifer management decisions for changing abstraction within a licensing regulatory framework. The use of a ‘baseline predictive simulation’ is advocated from both aquifer management and scientific perspectives, and an example of groundwater modelling predictive work on the Nottingham-Doncaster Sherwood Sandstone aquifer system is used to illustrate the methodology. Differences between the baseline predictive simulation and a predictive simulation are processed to extract quantitative information (spatially and temporally) on the response to changes in aquifer stresses. An explanation is given on the use of this information to aid aquifer management decisions for achieving environmental targets. The importance of the aquifer diffusivity with respect to a predictive simulation exercise is highlighted.
