Notes: Abstract Entamoeba histolytica genome was analysed by pulsed field gel electrophoresis under conditions to separate linear chromosomes in the 170–1400 kb range. We identified linear DNA molecules of 227, 366, 631, 850, 1112 and 1361 kb (mean sizes obtained by three different methods) and we estimated their reorientation times and migration velocities at various experimental conditions. DNA shift mobility assays, using ethidium bromide, suggested that bands migrating at 227 and 631 kb contain linear and circular DNA, whereas a band at 436 kb has only circular DNA. We obtained a regression equation relating sizes of supercoiled DNA molecules with their migration velocities during a pulse at constant electric field and temperature. We also developed a computer program (EHPATTERNS) that predicts the migration per pulse and the resolution order of circular and linear E. histolytica DNA at different pulse times and constant driving and frictional forces. The simulation showed that linear DNA molecules frequently co-migrate with circular molecules, but circular molecules change when the pulse time varies. This molecular mixture generates broad bands and difficulties in the interpretation of the molecular karyotype of E. histolytica.

Notes: Most conventional research methodologies both in consumer and business-to-business marketing are modernist in nature, but their applicability in an increasingly postmodern business setting is decaying. Postmodern conditions are particularly prevalent in the business-to-business arena but, although new postmodern research methods are slowly growing in popularity in consumer markets, their use by business-to-business market researchers is still almost nonexistent. The article contributes to filling the existing vacuum in the business-to-business marketing literature and provides a framework for the use of postmodern research methods in industrial markets. A short case is used as illustration of this use.

Notes: Estimation of the phosphate adsorption capacity in highly weathered acid soils is crucial for adopting appropriate phosphate fertilization practices. In this work, the salt sorption effect was used to develop a method for estimating phosphate adsorption capacity from the decrease in electrical conductivity of a potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution brought in contact with acidic soil samples from surface and subsurface horizons of Acrisols. The method is fast and simple and requires only the use of a conductimeter.

Notes: An efficient binary collision approximation (BCA) ion implant code with good prediction capabilities for semiconductor materials (Si, GaAs, SiC) with only one fitting parameter for low implantation doses is presented. It includes specific interatomic potentials and recent improvements in physical models for inelastic stopping. A periodic ab initio full bond electron density for the target is used. Damage accumulation is supported using a modified Kinchin–Pease model [G. H. Kinchin and R. S. Pease, Rep. Prog. Phys. 18, 1 (1955)]. Also, some of the BCA integration algorithms and target selection procedure have been refined. An algorithm commonly used for statistical noise reduction has been modified to also improve the noise reduction in the lateral and shallow zones. The agreement with experiments is good, even under channeling conditions and for different target materials. A comparison with experimental secondary ion mass spectroscopy results for several projectiles and targets is presented. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Among the various techniques that have been investigated to produce Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings in order to promote fixation and osteointegration of cementless prosthesis, the plasma spray (PS) technique is the most popular method commercially in use. PS presents some disadvantages such as the poor coating-to-substrate adhesion, low mechanical strength, and brittleness of the coating. In order to overcome the drawbacks of plasma spraying, an approach on how to bind HA to the Ti alloy will be introduced in this work, using a well-known technique in the metallurgical field: laser surface cladding. Different techniques were applied to characterize the coated samples, including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a simple model for the carrier capture and escape processes in quantum-well (QW) lasers, which yields an analytical expression for the ratio of the carrier capture and escape times. It predicts a decrease in the escape time with injected carrier density due to the state filling effect. It also shows an exponential dependence of the escape time on the effective barrier height and on the inverse of the temperature. A comparison between experimental and calculated values for InGaAs/GaAs QW lasers is presented showing a good agreement. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this work, a capacitance–voltage (C–V) technique, based on a combination of measured and simulated C–V characteristics, was applied to characterize In0.35Ga0.65As/GaAs multiquantum-well laser structures at room temperature. A theoretical model, including the self-consistent solution of Poisson and Schrödinger equations, was developed to simulate the C–V characteristics and the carrier concentration profiles. Measured C–V carrier concentration profiles were used to obtain the average impurity concentration in active regions. The comparison between experimental and simulated results was used to determine the conduction band offset, yielding ΔEc/ΔEg(approximate)0.8. In the case of samples with postgrowth quantum-well intermixing, this technique was applied to extract the characteristic interdiffusion length. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are at risk for a variety of acute pulmonary complications, including pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. Our aim was to describe the radiographic and CT findings and to determine the frequency of complicating spontaneous pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum in patients with IPF. A retrospective study was performed including 78 consecutive patients who underwent CT scanning of the chest and who had confirmed IPF. The chest radiographs and CT scans were reviewed by two chest radiologists and classified as showing features of extra-alveolar air collections. The CT scans showed extra-alveolar air in 9 (11.2 %) of 78 patients (six females and three males; age range 26–90 years, mean age 65 years). Pneumothorax was demonstrated in 5 patients and mediastinal air collections in 4 patients. All patients had dyspnea for 1–48 months (mean 14 months). Of the five cases with pneumothorax, four developed acute onset of dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain, whereas 1 patient had a relatively stable functional status. Of the 4 patients with pneumomediastinum, three presented with nonpleuritic chest pain and acute dyspnea. Chest radiographs showed extra-alveolar air in 6 patients. Three cases were predicted to be negative by chest radiographs. Follow-up CT showed that air collections had resolved completely in 5 patients. Two patients died of respiratory failure within 4 months after CT. Extra-alveolar air should be recognized as a relatively common IPF-related complication. Chest CT is a useful imaging method in determining air collections in patients with IPF that become acutely breathless and their chest radiograph fails to reveal the presence of extra-alveolar air.
