    Notes: Abstract We report two cases of aggressive fibromatosis of the mediastinum with esophageal involvement in adults. CT showed the posterior mediastinal mass involving the esophagus. In both cases, surgical resection was not feasible. Histopathologic examination showed a fibrous tissue. The patients died two years later.

    Notes: Abstract. Recently we reported that rat taste receptor cells respond to the neurotransmitter serotonin with an inhibition of a calcium-activated potassium current [17]. In the present study, this observation is confirmed and extended by studying the effects of an array of serotonergic agonists on membrane properties, calcium-activated potassium current, and voltage-dependent sodium current in taste receptor cells using the patch-clamp recording technique in the whole-cell configuration. Serotonergic inhibition of calcium-activated potassium current was mimicked by the agonists N-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine and by (±)-2-dipropylamino-8-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene. Both produced reversible inhibition of K Ca as well as significantly increasing the input resistance of the cell. The agonists 1-(1-naphthyl)piperazine and buspirone (both serotonin receptor 1A agonists) were similarly effective in reducing K Ca . Outward current was unaffected by application of phenylbiguanide, a serotonin receptor 3 agonist, though current was affected by subsequent application of (±)-2-dipropylamino-8-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene. Two agonists—N-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine and (±)-2-dipropylamino-8-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene—were also tested on voltage-dependent sodium currents; both were effective and reversible in reducing its magnitude at a variety of applied potentials. These data are consistent with the notion that serotonin effects in rat taste receptor cells are mediated by serotonin 1A receptors, though other receptor subtypes may be additionally expressed. Serotonin may affect the taste cell electrical properties during active stimulation in a paracrine fashion.

    Notes: Abstract  Although soil solarization is used to control soil-borne pests, it also results in increased growth response (IGR) of plants, beyond the effect of pest control. IGR is attributed to various abiotic factors (e.g. increased mineral nutrient concentrations) and biotic factors. In this work, we studied the role played by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soil extracts in the IGR. DOM concentrations were about twice as high in solarized soil than in untreated soil. In two out of three soils, solarization appeared to increase amino acid synthesis, indicating that it had a favorable effect on microbial activity. Elemental composition, carbohydrate levels, E4 : E6 ratios and FTIR spectra did not differentiate between DOM extracted from solarized soils and DOM extracted from untreated soils. Growth of corn plants increased with increasing concentrations of DOM. Addition to the soil of DOM extracted from leonardite increased populations of fluorescent pseudomonads, known as beneficial bacteria, and reduced fungal populations. We conclude that the increase in DOM concentration following soil solarization is a potentially positive plant-growth-enhancement factor.

    Notes: Liquid-state integral equation methods are employed to study the thermodynamic and structural properties of ideal and repelling rigid rods mixed with hard spheres in the limits when one of the species is dilute. The role of rod aspect ratio and sphere/rod size asymmetry is explored over a wide range of system parameters encompassing the colloid, nanoparticle, and crossover regimes. Novel predictions are found for the polymer (sphere) mediated depletion potentials and second virial coefficients of particles (rods) in dense polymer (sphere) suspensions. The adequacy of the closure approximations employed is tested by comparison with available numerical calculations and more rigorous theories in special limits. The liquid-state theory appears to be accurate for all properties in the nanoparticle regime and for the insertion chemical potential of needles and spherocylinders. However, it significantly underestimates depletion attractions effects in the colloidal regime of short rods and large spheres due to nonlocal entropic repulsion effects between polymers and particles not captured by the classic Percus–Yevick approximation. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Natural vitamin E was extracted by supercritical fluid extraction of carbon dioxide (SFE-CO2) from wheat germ. Several SFE-CO2 parameters, such as extracting pressure, extracting temperature, and flow rate of carbon dioxide were examined as the independent variables of central composite rotate design (CCRD). Through the response surface methodology (RSM), the optimal processing conditions were determined and the quadratic response surfaces were drawn from the mathematical models. The results demonstrated that the extracting pressure, temperature, pressure × temperature interaction, and flow rate of CO2 significantly affected the yield of the natural Vitamin E's extraction, while two interactions containing the flow rate of CO2 had no significant effect on the yield of natural vitamin E. The optimal processing conditions of the extraction of natural vitamin E in wheat germ by SFE-CO2 were: extracting pressure 5000 PSI, extracting temperature 316 K, and flow rate of carbon dioxide 1.7 ml/min. Optimum value predicted by RSM for the concentration of natural vitamin E was 2307 mg/100g. Close agreement between experimental and predicted values was obtained.
