Notizen: In Mn1−xZnxFe2O4 (x=0 to 1) nanosize particles prepared through hydrothermal precipitation we observe a decrease in particle size from 13 to 4 nm with increasing Zn concentration from 0 to 1. The lattice constant, a, for all Mn/Zn concentrations is found to be less than that for the corresponding bulk values. At specific compositions within x=0.35 and 0.5, the temperature dependence of the magnetization exhibits a cusp-like behavior below the temperature at which the nanoparticles undergo a ferri- to para-magnetic transition (Tc). The Curie temperatures, Tc, of the nanoparticles are in the range of 175–500 °C, which are much higher than their corresponding bulk values. To explain these unusual features, the strong preferential occupancy of cations in chemically inequivalent A and B sites and the metastable cation distribution in nanoparticles are invoked. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: 1. We have identified a neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-like constitutive form of NOS in vascular smooth muscle (VSM) using a functional contractility approach as well as immunohistochemical methods.2. NG-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester, NG-monomethyl-L- arginine and NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOARG), the competitive inhibitors of NOS, inhibited Mg2+-induced relaxation of de-endothelialized rat aorta precontracted with phenylephrine (PE). This Mg2+ relaxation of VSM was not affected by inhibitors of inducible NOS.3. Electrical field stimulation (EFS; 30–70 Hz) caused relaxation of rat aorta in the presence of tetrodotoxin (therefore not a neurogenic effect) and this EFS relaxation was effectively inhibited by L-NOARG, oxyhemoglobin and methylene blue.4. Immunohistochemical studies of dog saphenous vein using antibodies raised against neuronal NOS indicated prominent staining along the plasmalemma in a punctate pattern similar to the distribution of antibodies against caveolin-1, a major constituent of the plasmalemmal caveolae.5. We propose that a constitutive NOS of non-endothelial, non-neuronal origin is present in a special caveolae domain of VSM cell membranes and could be activated by an ionic mechanism yet to be characterized.

Notizen: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Islet cell autoantibodies are a specific marker for Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Standardisation of islet cell antibodies and the uniform reporting in International units is critical to research and the development of assays for islet cell autoantibodies as diagnostics.¶Methods. The suitability of a candidate serum to serve as the international standard for islet cell antibodies was studied by 19 participants in 8 countries. In addition, the purpose was to investigate whether the serum could also serve as a standard for antibodies to the 65 000 Mr isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65) and islet antigen-2 (IA-2). Control sera were included in the study to assess the validity of the various assay systems. The sera were lyophilized to World Health Organization criteria and the candidate serum assigned the ampoule code number 97/550.¶Results. The use of 97/550 was shown to notably reduce inter laboratory variability in the measurement of islet cell antibodies. In addition, there was a pronounced reduction in inter laboratory variability in the measurement of GAD65 and IA-2 antibodies. ¶Conclusions/interpretation. On the basis of the results reported here and with agreement of the participants, the preparation 97/550 has been established by the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Biological Standards for establishment as the first international standard for islet cell antibodies, with an assigned potency of 20 international units. In addition, 97/550 can serve as an international reference reagent for specific GAD65 antibodies, with an assigned potency of 100 units. It can also serve as a National Institute of Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) reference reagent for IA-2 antibodies for evaluation of assays for this material.
