    Notes: A comparison of rates of germination and appressorium formation by an isolate of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on mango leaves, fruit surfaces and cellophane membranes showed that behaviour was broadly similar on all three substrates. Frequency of appressorium formation was slightly higher on cellophane membranes, and both hyaline and melanized appressoria were formed. Only melanized appressoria were formed on mango surfaces. In vitro experiments on membranes showed comparative differences in physiological behaviour with temperature for two Philippine isolates of C. gloeosporioides. The most stimulatory temperature for production of appressoria differed in isolates I-2 and I-4 (25 and 20°C, respectively). At 30°C more appressoria became melanized than at lower temperatures, but the frequency of formation of penetration pegs was highest at 25°C. Conidia of C. gloeosporioides germinated on cellophane membranes at relative humidities as low as 95%, but the percentage of conidia germinating and forming appressoria increased as the RH approached 100%. Approximately 18% of conidia of C. gloeosporioides I-2 held at 62 and 86% RH for 4 weeks retained viability, and some were capable of forming appressoria when placed at 100% RH. These results have implications for epidemiological models for disease control.

    Notes: Abstract. Two-particle correlations of negative pions as a function of charged particle multiplicity are studied in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=17.3$ GeV per nucleon using the NA44 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron(SPS). We find that the source size parameters increase with the charged particle multiplicity. However the slope of the source size parameters plotted as a function of charged multiplicity is slightly larger at high multiplicity than at low multiplicity. The value of $\lambda$ is independent of charged multiplicity. For Pb+Pb collisions, $R_L$ is larger than $R_{TS}$ and $R_{TO}$ for all multiplicity intervals, whereas these three radius parameters were approximately equal in S+Nucleus collisions. The ratios ( $R_L/R_{TS}$ ) and ( $R_L/R_{TO}$ ) for Pb+Pb data show almost no dependence on charged multiplicity. The duration of pion emission $\Delta \tau$ is constant at 3.8 $\pm$ 1.1 fm/c as a function of the charged multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions. Effective volume (V) is also calculated as V= $\pi\times R_{TS}^2\times R_L$ , assuming a cylindrically shaped source. We found, within the limited statistics, the effective volume rapidly increases at high multiplicity.

    Notes: Abstract. Proton and deuteron production has been observed in S+S and S+Pb collisions at 200 A $\cdot$ GeV and in Pb+Pb reactions at 158 A $\cdot$ GeV at the CERN SPS accelerator. For Pb+Pb triton production was also measured. The p and d spectra as well as the p and t spectra were observed in similar rapidity ranges and over similar ranges of transverse momenta per nucleon, making it possible to interpret the cross sections of the composite particles in terms of coalescence mechanisms. Volumes of homogeneity were extracted and compared to pion-pair HBT interferometry results. Special attention is given to the dependence on transverse mass, centrality and rapidity.

    Notes: Abstract The application of sequential extraction procedures to determine metal speciation in sediments is fraught with uncertainty regarding what is actually dissolving or re-precipitating at each stage. In order to choose an appropriate scheme for the investigation of contaminated anaerobic mud two different sequential extraction procedures (Kersten and Förstner, 1986; Quevauviller, 1998) were investigated using a Cryogenic SEM (CryoSEM) technique coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA). This enabled assessment of the degree of reagent selectivity and any re-precipitation associated with the respective methods. Analysis of the non-leached sediment revealed the most abundant authigenic minerals in order of decreasing abundance to be Fe2+-phosphate vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O), mixed Fe, Zn, Cu sulphides, pyrite and calcite. After each stage of the sequential extraction the sediment residue was examined using CryoSEM. After extraction of the exchangeable fraction no obvious evidence of mineral dissolution was observed. Calcite was not completely dissolved during the carbonate extraction stage of either procedure. Vivianite began to dissolve in the carbonate extraction stage of both procedures and was completely dissolved by oxide extraction stage of both procedures. The sediment leached by acidified ammonium oxalate, contained abundant Fe oxalate crystals, suggesting that a large proportion of the Fe released from the vivianite has been re-precipitated. The Fe oxalate was then dissolved with the subsequent sulphide fraction. The technique used to extract the sulphide and organic fraction is the same in both schemes and no sulphide or metal rich organic matter was found in either residue.
