Notes: Abstract It is shown that the set of transformations of the s and d boson operators that maintain the IBM-like form of the Hamiltonian comprises a discrete point symmetry group D 2′. The transformations manifest themselves as a parameter symmetry of the IBM-1 Hamiltonian. The transformations considered are also necessary for constructing the most general IBM-2 Hamiltonian. The properties of the potential energy surfaces arising in connection with these transformations are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of the formation of current sheets in 3D magnetic configurations with singular X-lines was studied experimentally. It is shown that a sheet can be formed in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic-field component directed along the X-line, in which case the longitudinal component can exceed the transverse component everywhere inside the plasma. Characteristic of the CS formation in 3D magnetic configurations with X-lines are an increase in the longitudinal magnetic-field component inside the sheet and a decrease in the plasma compression ratio as compared to 2D configurations with null-lines. If the longitudinal component exceeds a certain critical value, a sheet cannot be formed: instead of a sheet, there appear two sheaths separated by a cavity with a local minimum in the electron density.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of time focusing for very slow neutrons is considered. This focusing may prove very useful in solving the problem of accumulating ultracold neutrons in a trap that are generated by a pulsed source. Diffraction at a phase grating moving across a beam or resonance neutron-spin flip is proposed to implement time-controlled changes in the neutron energy.

Notes: We present a study on the ultrafast third-order nonlinearities of a novel series of iso-polydiacetylene oligomers (iso-PDAs). Unlike polydiacetylenes that contain a linearly-conjugated backbone, iso-PDAs have a backbone that is cross-conjugated. A new Kerr-gate technique, differential optical Kerr effect (DOKE) detection, is used to measure third-order nonlinear susceptibilities, χ(3), and second hyperpolarizabilities, γ, of monomer, dimer, trimer, pentamer, and heptamer samples in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions. A linear increase in γ as a function of the number of repeat units is observed for all samples except the monomer, suggesting that the fixed-length linearly conjugated segments dominate the electronic polarizability. An added increase to the oligomer nonlinearities due to communication along the cross-conjugated path is not observed. The largest nonlinearity was observed in the heptamer sample, displaying a second hyperpolarizability relative to the THF solvent of γheptamer/γTHF=181±9. In addition, an interesting feature arising out of the signal decay tail is present in the samples but absent in our THF solvent reference. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This study presents an empirical analysis of the influence of labour market flows on wage and price formation. A system of wage, price and employment equations after Nickell (Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics 49: 103–128, 1987) is estimated, including labour flows as indicators of labour market tightness in the wage equation. An impulse response analysis using this system shows how changes in the flow of layoffs (flow from employment to unemployment) may be the basis of short-run Phillips curve effects in The Netherlands

Online publication date: 3-Mar-2006. Interpersonal conflict arose in the interactions of three dyads of learners engaged in collaborative work in a foreign language classroom. Results show that although learners corrected each other's errors using recasts, in several cases the learners continued to produce the erroneous form in posttests. Stimulated recall revealed that negative feelings about their conversation partners seemed to have caused some learners to interpret recasts not as helpful corrective feedback, but as criticism and even mockery. The social dynamics of the language classroom may in some cases dramatically alter the way the cognitive processes of attention, or noticing, are deployed in cooperative learning activities in which feedback occurs, and this in turn appears to affect acquisition.

Notes: In the medical world, statistical visualisation has largely been confined to the realm of relatively simple geographical applications. This remains the case, even though hospitals have been collecting spatial data relating to patients. In particular, hospitals have a wealth of back pain information, which includes pain drawings, usually detailing the spatial distribution and type of pain suffered by back-pain patients. Proposes several technological solutions, which permit data within back-pain datasets to be digitally linked to the pain drawings in order to provide methods of computer-based data management and analysis. In particular, proposes the use of geographical information systems (GIS), up till now a tool used mainly in the geographic and cartographic domains, to provide novel and powerful ways of visualising and managing back-pain data. A comparative evaluation of the proposed solutions shows that, although adding complexity and cost, the GIS-based solution is the one most appropriate for visualisation and analysis of back-pain datasets.

Notes: Research was conducted to determine changes in content and stability of hexane extractable lipid during processing of macaroni containing 15% (w/w) ground whole flaxseed and ground flaxseed hull. Dry mixture, hydrated mixture, extruded macaroni, dried macaroni and cooked macaroni were evaluated. Results were similar for macaroni containing ground whole flaxseed or ground flaxseed hull. Hydration decreased extractable lipid. Hydration decreased the amount of α-linolenic acid (ALA) and free fatty acid (FFA) and increased the amount of conjugated diene in the extracted lipid. Little or no conjugated triene was detected in lipid extracted from samples containing flaxseed, regardless of the processing step. Extruding, drying and cooking had little or no effect on the stability of lipids in macaroni containing flaxseed. The low levels of FFA, conjugated diene and conjugated triene indicate that lipid remained relatively stable during processing and cooking of macaroni containing ground flaxseed.

Notes: : The U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) restricts federal agencies from carrying out actions that jeopardize the continued existence of any endangered species. The U.S. Supreme Court has emphasized that the language of the ESA and its amendments permits few exceptions to the requirement to give endangered species the highest priority. This paper estimates economic costs associated with one measure for increasing instream flows to meet critical habitat requirements of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. Impacts are derived from an integrated regional model of the hydrology, economics, and institutions of the upper Rio Grande Basin in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico. One proposal for providing minimum streamflows to protect the silvery minnow from extinction would provide guaranteed year round streamflows of at least 50 cubic feet per second in the San Acacia reach of the upper Rio Grande. These added flows can be accomplished through reduced surface diversions by New Mexico water users in dry years when flows would otherwise be reduced below the critical level required by the minnow. Based on a 44-year simulation of future inflows to the basin, we find that some agricultural users suffer damages, but New Mexico water users as a whole do not incur damages from a policy that reduces stream depletions sufficiently to provide habitat for the minnow. The same policy actually benefits downstream users, producing average annual benefits of over $200,000 per year for west Texas agriculture, and over $1 million for El Paso municipal and industrial water users, respectively. Economic impacts of instream flow deliveries for the minnow are highest in drought years.
