Notes: We present a comparison of the field dependence of the relaxation times observed for Mn12Bz, (Bz=benzoate) spin cluster, and its derivative containing one extra electron, r-Mn12Bz. At low temperatures Mn12Bz has a total spin S=10, while for the reduced sample r-Mn12Bz the spin of the ground state is S=19/2. Theory predicts that half integer spin should not present quantum tunneling, the so-called spin parity effect. We show evidence from experiments that quantum tunneling is partially inhibited in the reduced species. Low temperature magnetization hysteresis loops of the reduced variety do not show well-defined steps. In addition, the ac susceptibility as a function of the field also does not show a clear resonance at the expected level crossing fields, as seen in the nonreduced sample. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The growth of Bifidobacterium animalis was tested, under batch and continuous culture conditions, for dependence upon specific nitrogen compounds. The addition of nitrogen bases (adenine, xantine, and guanine) to the medium containing acid-hydrolyzed casein significantly affected the growth of B. animalis, whereas no significant growth was reported when those bases were added to the medium containing only free amino acids; B. animalis was characterized by a μmax of 0.16/h when growth took place in PROLAB medium containing lactose and nitrogenous bases. Our study is potentially important toward design of improved infant milk formulations for healthy newborns.

Notes: Abstract This work describes the purification and characterization of a trypsin-like enzyme with fibrinolytic activity present in the abdomen of Haematobia irritans irritans (Diptera: Muscidae). The enzyme was purified using a one-step process, consisting of affinity chromatography on SBTI-Sepharose. The purified protease showed one major active proteinase band on reverse zymography with 0.15% gelatin, corresponding to a molecular mass of 25.5 kDa, with maximum activity at pH 9.0. The purified trypsin-like enzyme preferentially hydrolyzed synthetic substrates with arginine residue at the P1 position. The K m values determined for three different substrates were 1.88 × 10−4, 1.28 × 10−4, and 1.40 × 10−4 M for H-α-benzoyl-Ile-Glu-Gly-Arg-p-nitroanilide (S2222), dl-Ile-Pro-Arg-p-nitroanilide (S2288), and DL-Phe-Pip-Arg-p-nitroanilide (S2238), respectively. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by typical serine proteinase inhibitors such as SBTI (soybean trypsin inhibitor, K i = 0.19 nM) and BuXI (Bauhinia ungulata factor Xa inhibitor, K i = 0.48 nM), and less inhibited by LDTI (leech-derived tryptase inhibitor, K i = 1.5 nM) and its variants LDTI 2T and 5T (0.8 and 1.5 nM, respectively). The most effective inhibitor for this protease was r-aprotinin (r-BPTI) with a K i value of 39 pM. Synthetic serine protease inhibitors presented only weak inhibition, e.g., benzamidine with K i = 3.0 × 10−4 M and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF) showed traces of inhibition. The purified trypsin-like enzyme also digested natural substrates such as fibrinogen and fibrin net. The protease showed higher activity against fibrinogen and fibrin than did bovine trypsin. These data suggest that the proteolytic enzyme of H. irritans irritans is more specific to proteins from blood than are the vertebrate digestive enzymes. This enzyme's characteristics may be an adaptation resulting from the feeding behavior of this hematophagous insect.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Abstract. In this paper we present a new constructive algorithm for nesting problems. The layout is built by successively adding a new piece to a partial solution, i.e. to the set of pieces previously nested. Several criteria to choose the next piece to place and its orientation are proposed and tested. Different objective functions are also proposed to evaluate and compare partial solutions. A total of 126 variants of the algorithm, generated by the complete set of combinations of criteria and objective functions, are computationally tested. The computational experiments are based on data sets published in the literature or provided by other authors. In some cases this new algorithm generates better solutions than the best known (published) solutions.

Notes: Abstract The present work reports studies of the thermal behaviour of some anti-hypertensive drugs. Their purities were determined by DSC and specialized pharmacopeial methods. The activation energy values suggest the following sequence of satability: nifedipine〉propanolol hydrochloride〉captoril. Analysis of the DSC data indicated that the degrees of purity of nifedipine, captopril and propanolol hydrochloride were similar to those found by pharmacopeial methods BP 93 and USP 23. The simplicity, speed and low operational costs of thermal analysis justify its application in the quality control of pharmaceutical drugs.
