Notes: Radiofrequency Maze Procedure and Atrial Size. Introduction: Previous studies showed that the surgical maze procedure can restore sinus rhythm and atrial transport function in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation (AF). However, no previous studies discussed the association of atrial size reduction and the success of sinus conversion by the radiofrequency (RF) maze procedure for chronic AF. Methods and Results: A total of 119 chronic AF patients undergoing valvular operations were included in this study. Sixty-one patients received RF and cryoablation to create lesions in both atria to simulate the surgical maze II or III procedure (RF maze II or RF maze III; 13 patients, group 1) or a modified maze pattern (RF maze “IV”; 48 patients, group 2). The other 58 patients who underwent valvular operations alone without the maze procedure served as control (group 3). At 3-month follow-up after operation, sinus rhythm was restored in 73%, 81%, and 11% of patients in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Preoperative left and right atrial sizes were not statistically significant predictors of sinus conversion by the RF maze procedure. However, as a result of postoperative reduction of atrial sizes, postoperative left atrial diameter was significantly smaller in patients who had sinus conversion by the RF maze procedure than in patients who did not regain sinus rhythm (45.0 ± 7.0 mm vs 51.0 ± 8.0 mm; P = 0.03). Postoperative right atrial area of patients who had sinus conversion by the RF maze procedure also was significantly smaller than that of patients who did not regain sinus rhythm (18.1 ± 4.4 cm2 vs 28.5 ± 8.2 cm2; P = 0.008). Conclusion: Atrial size reduction appears to predict the success of sinus conversion with the RF maze procedure used in conjunction with valvular surgery.

Notes: : A small-scale (35 g flour) laboratory method for Asian salted noodle processing was developed. Six wheat varieties were selected to compare laboratory and pilot plant production methods and resultant noodle products. Raw noodle color and discoloration after 24-h storage, cooking loss, and noodle weight gain during cooking were measured. Cooked noodle hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness were analyzed with a TA-XT2 Texture Analyzer. All these properties, except springiness, were highly correlated between laboratory and pilot plant products. Both methods were reproducible with high precision, and they were comparable to each other. When the quality of noodles from different wheat varieties was ranked, similar rankings were obtained for both processing methods; the laboratory method is suitable for evaluating wheat breeding lines for noodle quality.

Notes: Bipolar leads are most commonly used in the current practice of pacemaker therapy. In our study of 124 patients implanted with Guidant/Cardiac Pacemakers (CPI) Vigor dual chamber pacemakers, 5 patients had unexpectedly abrupt increases in bipolar lead impedance and pacing threshold 2 weeks to 18 months postimplantation without changes in sensing function. With the lead configuration reprogrammed to unipolar, the lead impedance and pacing threshold were restored to appropriate ranges. The changes in bipolar lead parameters can be caused by the CPI's “Quick Connect” (QC1) header lead system incorporated in these pacemakers.

Notes: WANG, C.-P., et al.: Indapamide Induced Syncope in a Patient with Long QT Syndrome. A 60-year-old woman who had been successfully treated with atenolol and cardiac pacing for hypertension and long QT syndrome developed recurrent episodes of palpitations and syncope. Several days prior to these episodes, indapamide 2.5 mg/day was taken for better control of hypertension. The episodes were associated with prolongation of QT interval and mild hypokalemia (3.1 MEQ/L). Indapamide was immediately stopped, but the QT remained prolonged 2 days later, although the potassium level was normalized. This case suggests that indapamide can cause potassium independent prolongation of the QT interval, resulting in arrhythmia induced syncope.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we present a scheme for quantum key distribution, in which different-frequency photons are used to encode the key. These different-frequency photons are produced by an acoustic-optical modulator and two kinds of narrow filters. This scheme may be implementable in practice.

Notes: Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations employing a many-body embedding potential model have been conducted to calculate both bulk and shear viscosity of pure liquid iron at the Earth's outer core conditions. Liquid iron shear viscosity thus obtained is in the order of 10−2 Pa · s and is in close agreement with previous estimates. In contrast, liquid iron bulk viscosity is in the order of 10−3 to 10−4 Pa · s and is much smaller than previous estimates. Consequently, the ratio of bulk to shear viscosity is close to 0.1. This value disagrees with both the common speculation that bulk and shear viscosities are equal at ambient pressure, and the previous inference that bulk viscosity of liquid iron is much larger than shear viscosity at outer core conditions. Potential implications of present data are also briefly given for the dynamic state of the outer core.
