    Notes: The stray field of individual nanostructured permalloy (Py) disks has been measured by means of a sub-μm Hall magnetometer which incorporates a ballistic two-dimensional electron system. The circular nanomagnets have diameters of d=500, 600, and 700 nm and thickness of t=20 nm. The characteristic shape of the experimental Hall curves can be explained by the behavior expected from micromagnetic simulations. They indicate that near remanence the disks are in the vortex phase. For the largest Py nanomagnet, if saturated, an averaged value of the stray field of 36 mT is measured in our 300 nm wide Hall sensor. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Quality of care for vulnerable elderly clients makes it important to consider the psychosocial effects of interactive computer use as a means to communicate for social, functional, and/or health care purposes in a home health care setting. In a 3-month randomized prospective trial, telecommunications terminals were installed in the private residences of computer-illiterate persons, 65-years-of-age and older, providing visiting nurses the opportunity to teach computer use with three different training methods. The control group had similar weekly nurse visits, but no computer terminal use. Pre-posttests using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale compared change in self-esteem and depression scores of computer-use clients with the scores of the control group clients.Interactive computer use, alone, did not significantly change scores. Compared to the control group, however, there was a significant change toward improved self-esteem and depression when interactive computer use was accompanied with weekly nurse computer training. Weekly training with a significant other, as a substitute for the nurse trainer, significantly improved self-esteem scores but not depression scores. Interactive computer use was not associated with decreased self-esteem or increased depression. Attitude changes and responses to the particular telecommunication service used in this study were mixed, suggesting future research should be based on improved telecommunication systems with access to programs that have greater practical application to the needs of elderly clients.

    Notes: By laser-interference lithography, reactive-ion etching, and selective wet-chemical etching using a citric acid-based solution, we have fabricated large periodic arrays of AlGaAs microdisks with periods of 4 μm and disk diameters between 1.5 and 2 μm. The arrays are characterized by temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. Taking into account the below-threshold absorption of the quantum wells inside the disks, we get disk quality factors close to the theoretical maximum value. We demonstrate that our technique allows one also to produce one-dimensionally or two-dimensionally coupled arrays of microdisks. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction experiments employing the asymmetric (202) Bragg diffraction have been performed to characterize self-assembled InAs quantum dots grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. We find that the strain is elastically relaxed with different components. The volume distribution of partially strained InAs inside islands is peaked at intermediate strain values. The fraction of both almost fully strained and totally relaxed InAs is found to be small. In addition, a small volume fraction of relaxed InxGa1−xAs is found. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on gate voltage dependent electron transport in modulation-doped In0.75Al0.25As/In0.75Ga0.25As heterostructures with strained InAs-inserted-channels grown on GaAs substrates. At temperatures of T=4.2 K we achieve mobilities of up to μ=215 000 cm2(V s)−1 and electron densities of nS=1.2×1012 cm−2 for the highest measured gate voltage of Vg=20 V. The electron effective mass m*=0.036 me is determined by temperature dependent Shubnikov–de Haas measurements. The observation of an anisotropic mobility when the first excited subband becomes populated proves interface scattering to be the limiting mechanism for the electron mobility. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have realized a micromechanical cantilever magnetometer with an integrated two-dimensional electron system (2DES) in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). The cantilever was defined by lithography and wet-etched selectively to a MBE-grown stop layer. We reach a sensitivity of 10−13 J/T, which enables us to study the de Haas–van Alphen effect in a 2DES of only 0.04 cm2 area. We demonstrate that, at low temperature, the oscillation amplitude at even filling factors is enhanced by a factor of up to 1.8 with respect to the single-particle value. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Quantitative grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering experiments have been performed on self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. We find pronounced nonspecular diffuse scattering satellite peaks with high diffraction orders, indicating a lateral ordering in the spatial positions of the InAs QDs. The mean-dot–dot distance and correlation lengths of the dot lateral distribution are found to be anisotropic. We observe the sharpest dot distribution in the [110] direction. Additional broad diffraction peaks are observed and associated with dot facet crystal truncation rods of the {111} and {101} facet families. This suggests an octagonal-based dot shape. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Background Genetic disposition and androgen dependence are important characteristics of the common patterned loss of scalp hair known as androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The genetic factors contributing to AGA are currently unknown. The human hairless gene (HR) has recently been cloned and mutations have been reported in families with autosomal recessive universal congenital alopecia and papular atrichia. The main feature of these disorders is persistent complete absence of hair at or shortly after birth. This suggests that HR is essential and specific for the development of hair. Objectives To test the hypothesis that HR may be involved in AGA. Methods We systematically screened HR for genetic variability by means of single-strand conformation analysis (SSCA) in 46 unrelated men with AGA. To test for an involvement of HR in the development of AGA, seven common variants were genotyped in 61 families with 93 affected offspring. The results were analysed with the transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT). Results SSCA showed 15 single nucleotide substitutions: eight missense mutations, four silent mutations and three mutations in exon-flanking intronic sequences. TDT results showed a marginally significant association between AGA and variants 3379–29G/T (P = 0·024) and 2611–68C/T (P = 0·047). These results, however, did not remain significant after applying the conservative Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Conclusions Our results do not provide evidence for a strong involvement of HR in the development of AGA, although a minor role cannot be fully excluded.

    Notes: Abstract  The healthy term, and particularly the premature infant, is born with a very low glomerular filtration rate (GFR), controlled by a delicate balance of intrarenal vasoconstrictor and vasodilator forces. Vasoactive disturbances can easily further reduce the already low GFR. The newborn infant is thus prone to develop vasomotor nephropathy (VMNP) or acute renal failure (ARF). The main causes for ARF at this young age are prerenal mechanisms, and include hypotension, hypovolemia, hypoxemia perinatal asphyxia, and neonatal septicemia. Other causes include the administration of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, indomethacin and tolazoline. The most-important factors governing the ultimate renal prognosis are the severity of the underlying disorder, the rapidity of an accurate diagnosis, prompt treatment, and avoidance of severe iatrogenic complications. The immediate treatment is of particular importance in VMNP, i.e., prerenal ischemic ARF, and consists of correcting abnormalities in fluid homeostasis and reduction of the complications of the acute azotemic state (uremia, hyperkalemia, acidosis, and hypertension). In severe and prolonged (established) ARF, temporary dialysis therapy may be indicated. Prerenal ARF with oliguria or anuria warrants immediate volume resuscitation. Special attention should be given to infants with congestive heart failure (CHF). The sick neonate with persistent oliguria and CHF should be treated with intravenous dopamine. Furosemide (FM) is the second line of therapy for babies with indomethacin-induced ARF. In most other conditions, the therapeutic effect of FM is limited to a transient increase in urine flow, without improving basic renal function. The special conditions of the maturing kidney have to be appreciated in order to protect babies from undue renal injury. With the increasing knowledge of the mechanisms governing the development of ARF, progress has been made in the development of new treatment modalities. For example theophylline, calcium antagonists, ATP-MgCl2, thyroxine, and a variety of cytokines may in the near future be used to prevent or ameliorate VMNP and/or recently established ARF. With a combination of time-honored and new therapeutic strategies, there may well be a brighter future for neonates with vasomotor, prerenal, ischemic ARF.
