    Notes: A differential optical reflectivity measurement technique for freestanding films is presented. The system is highly sensitive to changes in the polarization state of the reflected light. The method is used to study the evolution of an optically anisotropic liquid crystalline structure with temperature. In addition we present a reflectivity method for determining the film thickness for films consisting of two to hundreds of layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Electroreflectance was employed to study the electric-field effect on the interband transitions of InAs quantum dots embedded in an In0.16Ga0.84As matrix. The electric field caused an asymmetric quantum-confined Stark shift, which revealed a nonzero built-in dipole moment in the quantum dots. We found the ground-state and excited-state dipole moments to be in the same direction. The electron wave functions are distributed near the base of the quantum dot, with their centers located below the hole wave functions. We also observed a symmetric Stark shift in the wetting-layer transitions. This implies that the wetting-layer potential is symmetric, despite its being capped with quantum dots. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To test the impact of intravenous omeprazole on Helicobacter pylori eradication for bleeding peptic ulcers.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:A total of 175 H. pylori-infected patients with bleeding peptic ulcers were randomized into either an omeprazole group or a ranitidine group, receiving intravenous omeprazole or ranitidine for 3 days after endoscopy. Afterwards, 1-week triple therapy was used to eradicate H. pylori for both groups. Six weeks later, either a 13C-urea breath test or follow-up endoscopy was performed to assess the success of H. pylori eradication.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:The rebleeding rate was lower in the omeprazole group vs. the ranitidine group (6% vs. 17%, P 〈 0.05). The H. pylori eradication rate was higher in the omeprazole group (intention-to-treat analysis: 83% vs. 66%, P 〈 0.05; per protocol analysis: 93% vs. 80%, P 〈 0.05). For patients with duodenal ulcers, the per protocol H. pylori eradication rate of the omeprazole group was higher than that of the ranitidine group (93% vs. 73%, P 〈 0.05).〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:Intravenous omeprazole can decrease the risk of rebleeding of peptic ulcers. For duodenal ulcers, in particular, intravenous omeprazole may even improve the H. pylori eradication rate of the subsequent triple therapy.

    Notes: Abstract  Lycopersicon hirsutum G1.1560 is a wild accession of tomato that shows resistance to Oidium lycopersicum, a frequently occurring tomato powdery mildew. This resistance is largely controlled by an incompletely dominant gene Ol-1 near the Aps-1 locus in the vicinity of the resistance genes Mi and Cf-2/Cf-5. Using a new F2 population (n=150) segregating for resistance, we mapped the Ol-1 gene more accurately to a location between the RFLP markers TG153 and TG164. Furthermore, in saturating the Ol-1 region with more molecular markers using bulked segregant analysis, we were able to identify five RAPDs associated with the resistance. These RAPDs were then sequenced and converted into SCAR markers: SCAB01 and SCAF10 were L. hirsutum-specific; SCAE16, SCAG11 and SCAK16 were L. esculentum-specific. By linkage analysis a dense integrated map comprising RFLP and SCAR markers near Ol-1 was obtained. This will facilitate a map-based cloning approach for Ol-1 and marker-assisted selection for powdery mildew resistance in tomato breeding.
