Notes: Abstract  Changes in mRNA levels for the seven gene homologues to endoxyloglucan transferase-related protein, expansin, extensin, β-1,3 glucanase, glycine-rich protein, pectinacetylesterase and pectinesterase, which were obtained by random sequencing studies, were investigated in relation to rind development in citrus (Citrus unshiu Marc.) fruit. Expression patterns in the albedo and flavedo were classified into four types: Type-I, transcript levels low in early fruit development but increased at the ripening stage; Type-II, transcript levels high until mid-development and then decreased towards ripening; Type-III, detectable transcript limited to fruitlets at 26 days after flowering (DAF); Type-IV, ubiquitous during the development. Based on the expression patterns, we discuss the possible roles of these genes in rind development.

Notes: Abstract: Some connective tissue diseases are characterised by specific autoantibodies. Although anticentromere or antikinetochore antibodies (ACA), and antitopoisomerase-I or anti-Scl-70 antibodies (ATA), have disease-specific meanings for systemic sclerosis and its CREST variant, respectively, the clinical significance of their concurrent existence has not been clarified. We investigated this condition in our case and with reference to the literature. For this purpose published reports between 1980 and 1998, where both ACA and ATA were measured simultaneously, were analysed by a MEDLINE search. In 10 papers 24 patients had both antibodies. In a further 25 reports, covering 3509 subjects who had either ACA or ATA, no concurrent existence was found. Prevalences of ACA (P(ACA)) and ATA (P(ATA)) in exclusive cases varied from 8.8% to 54.5%, and from 11.8% to 87.5%, respectively, whereas P(ACA) varied from 20.0% to 56.6%, and P(ATA) from 16.8% to 63.7% in the reports with patients positive for both. The actual prevalence of simultaneous presence was between 0.7% and 5.6%, significantly lower than the expected probabilities if both antibodies were to occur independently (p〈0.005). In concurrently positive cases visceral involvement was characteristic, especially affecting the vascular system, with deterioration of oesophageal function and cutaneous lesions. We suggest that ATA and ACA do not coexist by chance, and that clinical characteristics with coexistence have a significance for the classification of scleroderma.

Notes: Abstract A variety of spray pyrolysis (SP) techniques have been developed to directly produce ceramic powders from solutions. Examples that are discussed include the following powders: (La0.8Sr0.2)0.9MnO3-YSZ (La(Sr)MnO3-YSZ), La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (La(Sr)CoO3), (CeO2)0.8(SmO1.5)0.2-NiO (SDC-NiO) and La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-NiO (LSGM-NiO). For all these powders, spherical, non-agglomerated, submicrometer particles were obtained from aqueous solution of metal salts into a furnace using an ultrasonic atomizer at 1.7 MHz. After SP some of the particles exhibit a hollow-shell morphology. Subsequent calcination at 1000°C yielded crystalline particles. The electrical performance of Ni-SDC/LSGM/La(Sr)CoO3 fuel cells operating at 800°C, prepared from the powders obtained by SP, is reported.
